I want to create a general line of code I can apply to any ggplot grouped barchart I make. I want it to make my graphs colour blind friendly. In the library ggthemes, the scale_fill_colorblind function does just the job. My problem is that black is often picked as one of the colours; I sometimes need to overlay confidence intervals and other stuff, so black is not really an option.

Outside of ggplot2, another source of built-in themes is the ggthemes package. The workspace already contains the plt_prop_unemployed_over_time, the line plot from before. Let's explore some of the ready-made ggthemes themes.

ggplot2 is a brilliant graphing package in R, that is great for creating publication quality figures. Recently, new extensions of ggplot2 have become available that add or enhance the package's capabilities. One such extension is ggthemes that contains various new scales, themes and geoms for ggplot2.

The palettes displayed are organized by package and by palette name. Thesevalues are required when obtaining a palette (as a vector of hexadecimalcolors), from the the paletteer::paletteer_d() function. Once we arefamiliar with the names of the color palette packages (e.g.,RColorBrewer, ggthemes, wesanderson), we can narrow downthe content of this information table by supplying a vector of such packagenames to color_pkgs.

What do we do if we find we really need the ggthemes package consistently in our work? Since ggthemes is not part of the tidyverse, it will not be available in the RStudio Server container that we just started. One option would be to simply ask users to install it if they need it, by running install.packages("ggthemes") from the console prompt in RStudio. This would, of course, work...to a point. But remember that the package would only be available in the container in which the package was installed. If you remove the container, and start up a new one, you would need to repeat the package install.

Creating our own image requires writing a Dockerfile, which is a sort of script that defines the image filesystem and environment. There are many useful things that you can do in a Dockerfile to control the image environment. Here, we only need two know two Dockerfile instructions: FROM, which identifies the image to serve as the base for our new image, and RUN, which runs a command in the image assembly process. The following Dockerfile customizes the rocker/tidyverse image to include ggthemes:

To build the image (which we'll call tidyverse-ggthemes), put the Dockerfile (and be sure to name it "Dockerfile") in an empty directory (whch is usually inside a directory structure maintained in a source control repository, but for now, any empty directory will do). Then, from the directory where the Dockerfile lives, run:$: docker build -t tidyverse-ggthemes .If the image build succeeded, you should see tidyverse-ggthemes in the list of images produced by running docker images. You can get more themes from add-on packages, like ggthemes. Most of the themes also have custom scale_ functions like scale_colour_economist(). Their website has extensive examples and instructions for alternate or dark version sof these themes. ff782bc1db
