GEOIDs are very important for understanding and interpreting geographic and demographic data and their relationship to one another. Data users rely on GEOIDs to join the appropriate demographic data from censuses and surveys, such as the American Community Survey (ACS), to various levels of geography for data analysis, interpretation and mapping. Without a common identifier among geographic and demographic datasets, data users would have a difficult time pairing the appropriate demographic data with the appropriate geographic data, thus considerably increasing data processing times and the likelihood of data inaccuracy.

The Census Bureau creates and maintains geographic codes for many statistical geographic areas that are not covered by FIPS codes and GNIS codes. These geographic areas include census divisions, census regions, census tracts, block groups, census blocks and urban areas. The full GEOID for many levels of geography combines both the FIPS codes and Census Bureau codes. For example, census tracts, block groups and census blocks nest within state and county; therefore, the GEOIDs for each of these geographic areas contains both the state and county FIPS codes, in which they nest.

Abstract:Liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects are regulated by host countries, but policy and regulation should depend on geography and meteorology. Without considering the role of geography and meteorology, sub-optimal design choices can result, leading to energy conversion efficiency and capital investment decisions that are less than ideal. A key step in LNG is regasification, which transforms LNG back from liquid to the gaseous state and requires substantial heat input. This study investigated different LNG regasification technologies used around the world and benchmarked location and meteorology-related factors, such as seawater temperatures, ambient air temperatures, wind speeds and relative humidity. Seawater vaporizers are used for more than 95% of locations subject to water quality. Ambient air conditions are relatively better for South America, India, Spain and other Asian countries (Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Thailand) and provide a much cleaner regasification technology option for natural and forced draft systems and air-based intermediate fluid vaporizers. On a global basis, cold energy utilization currently represents

The M.A. in Geography is a small program with 10-12 students in residence each year. With 14 permanent faculty, the student to faculty ratio of around 1 to 1 provides students with excellent access to faculty. Graduate faculty are strongly committed to teaching, advising, and research collaboration with graduate students.

The department has two computer labs, a planning project space, and the Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC) with state-of-the-art commercial GIS, remote sensing, GPS, and open source geospatial hardware and software (including ArcGIS, ENVI, R, QGIS, and Google Earth Engine). The GAC is supported by a large format plotter. A hydrogeography lab is resident in the department. Additionally, there is a microclimatology/precipitation chemistry station at the nearby Ecology Research Center, three stream monitoring stations at Hueston Woods State Park, and access to the Institute for Food sustainable farm. An extensive collection of aerial photos, historical maps, and open source and commercial multispectral, synthetic aperture radar, and lidar remote sensing data is available for graduate research support.

Six courses, including introductory human geography, introductory physical geography, cartography or GIS, a quantitative methods course, and two additional advanced courses, are generally required. Deficiencies may be made up after admission. In addition, a statement of purpose/research interests and three letters of recommendation must be provided.

The Civil War represented a watershed moment in popular mapping, as newspapers published battle maps and Americans both north and south followed the progress of the war. Some of the first American maps to shade or color code the different states (i.e., choropleth maps) distinguished slave and free states, while the Lincoln administration closely studied maps detailing the distribution of slave populations in the South. The 1874 publication of the Statistical Atlas of the United States, charting data from the 1870 census, opened a new era of the American government using cartographic data in support of policymaking.18 This period also saw growing institutional commitment to the study and advancement of geography, as seen in the establishment of the American Geographical Society in 1851 and the National Geographic Society in 1888. It was also at this time, in 1878, that Harvard appointed its first geography professor.

Whether considering grand strategy, military capability, national cartographic consciousness, or individual spatial cognition, to exclude geographic content fails to make use of a valuable tool. Geographic expertise and resources are scattered widely and inconsistently across the national security enterprise, but many organizations have some sort of department that produces cartographic or geospatial products, often in conjunction with other graphic design services. That some parts of the government employ geography in their public messaging and others do not could reflect deliberate choices about the most appropriate or most effective ways to make an argument. More likely, however, is that the differences are the result of widely varying cartographic capabilities across the government, unevenly distributed geospatial resources, and long-unquestioned institutional processes.

The undersea domain has captured less attention in the popular press than space and cyberspace, but it is nevertheless a vital strategic domain that challenges the geographic thinking of national security leaders. In contrast to the cyber and space domains, shortfalls in thinking about undersea space derive more from disinterest and lack of imagination than technical or bureaucratic challenges. Anti-submarine warfare was a high priority in World War II, but submarine operations of that era were only partially an undersea contest. Competing for mastery of the undersea domain reached its height in the Cold War ocean surveillance networks and reliance on submarine-launched ballistic missiles for strategic deterrence. Such issues of military use of the undersea domain have become prominent again, but technology has also dramatically increased the commercial importance of the undersea environment. The overwhelming majority of global communication rides on seabed fiber-optic cables and the growing feasibility of extracting seabed resources requires an enhanced understanding of the undersea geography that determines competing claims and the accessibility of those resources. These challenges raise the importance of making national security leaders familiar with the shape and science of the undersea world. Those who develop and implement national strategy will have to become more spatially conversant in presenting and considering the strategic issues of the undersea domain.

You will not have to purchase a textbook, but you will have to devote at least 10-12 hours per week on this class. When this class is taught in the classroom, it would be a 3 hrs/wk in the class for lecture AND 3 hrs/wk in the class for lab - plus homework hours. This semester, since the lecture portion is online and the lab portion is live on Zoom, you still have to devote the same time, maybe more, since you'll have to watch the videos and study what I prepare for you on your own. e24fc04721
