I have since stressed the absolute necessity of honoring the historical context of Scripture. There is a massive cultural gap between biblical text, even the New Testament, and our everyday world. I have written about this Grand Canyon chasm here Evel Knivel, The Grand Canyon & Us: The Strange and Deep Gulf to the Bible.

Genesis 1 does not speak to us primarily of the seasons of the solar calendar though those are not necessarily excluded. Genesis 1 speaks of the seasons of worship, the festivals of the Lord. The new Moon marked the time go great celebration and worship to Yahweh. The Moon and the lights told Israel when it was the season of Passover, the the season of Booths and the like.

The Septuagint translation of Genesis also translates Genesis 1.14 as referring to the Israelite calendar. Sirach 43.7, numerous references in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jubilees, and Philo interpret Genesis 1.14 as referring to the Israelite worship calendar. Since many do not have these common to the ancients sources I will cite them.

Many other passages can be cited from Second Temple Judaism, as well as the rabbis following the Second Temple period, that clearly indicates that Genesis 1.14 was understood in reference to the worship calendar of Israel.

So translations for a hundred years (thousands if we include the LXX and other ancient renderings) have had festivals or religious festivals in Genesis 1.14. These include Moffat, TEV, GNB, NEB, REB, etc and most commentaries.

A few days ago, while discussing someone's new venture, I said, "It's a Genesis month!" Genesis, the name of the first book of the Bible, means "origin," and the first verse (Genesis 1:1) exemplifies a new beginning.

After the conversation, Malcolm (my husband) and I reflected on this phrase, along with its meaning: "This is a season of new beginnings!" It seemed to echo in the atmosphere, and the word ministered to us personally. Then I said, "That was the Holy Spirit."

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters." (Genesis 1:1-2 NLT)

The Bible gives us a key to planning, which is to first delight in Him (Psalm 37:4), and then from that place of fellowship, recognize what He is doing and see what His favor is on, then participate with Him in it.

So if the yearly chatter about goal-setting programs makes you feel uncomfortable, it does not mean that God does not have plans or projects for you. Perhaps that discomfort is an invitation from the Lord. He is beckoning you to watch and see where the Holy Spirit is moving uniquely for you.

On Sunday as we worshiped, I was holding this word about new beginnings before the Lord. Suddenly, I saw an artist's studio in my mind's eye. The studio was lit with a low, golden light, and it looked as though it had been in use for many years.

Two easels were sitting in the room, and both were covered. Then, I saw the Lord's hands lifting the cover off the easel to the left. He revealed a canvas that was brand new and had never been used! Next, He lifted the cover off the easel on the right. This was a painting that seemed to have been left for a very long time.

Suddenly, a light shone on the unfinished painting, on a particular spot. The light seemed to come from a high window, which was suddenly uncovered. Now the painting could be seen in a new light. It became clear how to go about finishing it.

tag_hash_105Then, I saw Jesus coming through a door on the right. He was holding a third painting in His hands. This was a very old painting from a previous generation. It was evident that He had freshly restored the work and given it new life.

The light on the second canvas speaks of the Holy Spirit shedding new light on old dreams, with an "aha" moment! This includes projects and plans that we have laid aside. Now is the time to reflect that perhaps God's presence is on them for the current season.

The Scripture in Psalm 51 that I began with reminds us that during a season of new beginnings, God is working on our hearts, for David wrote it out of deep sorrow and repentance. The Lord wants to remind us of the nearness of His presence.

As I sat in silence with the Lord this morning, His peace, love and grace filled me and I felt some of the interpretation was that He was bringing life into dead places, that it would not look like what I was expecting but that I would love it all the same. That it is something right before me that I have not been able to perceive.

"Genesis" is the title of the first episode of the fourth season of the science fiction television show Sliders. Maggie and Quinn arrive on Earth Prime, which Rembrandt and Wade had already slid to, only to discover it has been conquered by the Kromaggs.

Infiltrating the prison compound, Maggie, Marta, and Quinn find Rembrandt held in solitary confinement. At first Rembrandt thinks it's some Kromagg trick to force information out of him (Kromaggs can also alter others' perceptions of them), but he's convinced by Marta. Quinn is shot down as the others escape, and under interrogation by the Kromagg commander, he learns that Wade has been shipped offworld to serve as a breeder for Kromagg-Human hybrids.

On his way to be transported to the slave camp, Quinn is rescued by Marta, Maggie, Rembrandt, and various resistance members. They successfully repel the Kromaggs and escape, but Marta is killed in the fight and Quinn's adoptive mother is sent to the slave camp. Back at the Chandler, Quinn affixes the microdot to his forehead and hears a message from his real parents. They refer to the war between Kromaggs and humans on their world and say they will return for him when the war is over and the humans have won. Quinn's parents also give him the coordinates for the world on which they left their other son, Quinn's brother.

Maggie, Quinn, and Rembrandt decide to head for that world and retrieve his brother as well as find Quinn's homeworld. He deduces they must have found a weapon to defeat the Kromaggs because his parents did come back for him, and they'd have more of a chance with that than becoming part of the resistance. Quinn opens the vortex and promises Earth Prime "we'll be back, you can count on that" before sliding once more with Rembrandt and Maggie.

Tropical waves are the primarily source for eastern North Pacific (EPAC) tropical cyclones. Many, but not all, of the precursor tropical waves can be tracked back to Africa. The term tropical wave is generic in nature, referring to a trough, or cyclonic curvature in the tradewind easterlies. Perturbations within the tradewind easterlies can interact with a favorable background environment in the EPAC basin in the development of tropical cyclones. Since any coherent perturbation within the tradewind easterlies can loosely be termed a tropical wave, the source for a tropical wave is not always from Africa. If tropical waves that lead to the development of a tropical cyclone in the EPAC do not have to move off the coast of Africa, what other source can develop a precursor tropical wave? In order to answer this question, this study will analyze the source of a tropical wave which was the precursor for an early season EPAC tropical cyclone, Tropical Storm Alvin in May 2013. - Indicates paper has been withdrawn from meeting - Indicates an Award WinnerSee more of: Poster Session II

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice (the word solstice is Latin for stand still), falls on June 21 and marks the longest day of the year. On this date, the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator and shines most directly in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun pauses at this northernmost point for several days. The summer solstice was an important date in the past as it marks the midpoint of the summer. There is another solstice in the year--winter solstice--that is around December 21.

Two obvious answers include the fact that it is usually warmer and the hours of daylight are longer in the summer than in the winter. But what causes these differences? Try your hand at these true-false questions below.

If you answered true to the three statements above, you are not alone. Many people have lots of ideas about the summer season. For the first statement, the answer is true only if you are located in the Northern Hemisphere. For the second statement, the answer is true only if you are in the Southern Hemisphere. The third statement is false. The temperature of the sun does not change with the seasons. Let's take a look at why we have seasons. Many people believe that the distances between the sun and Earth are the reason for the seasons. This is not true. There are two causes for the changes of seasons. The inclination of the Earth's axis, or the tilt of the Earth is always the same at 23.5. This angle does not change as it travels in its orbit around the sun. Summer occurs when the rays of the sun are the most vertical on a particular place on Earth. Winter occurs when the sun's rays are the most slanted on a particular place on Earth. Since the rays of the sun are most direct in the tropics all year, the seasonal temperature there change very little except at higher altitudes. 152ee80cbc
