May 30 - Wrapping up an unbelievable trip

CSU finished its last full day in Italy with a match against Club Italia and wandered through downtown Milan. Although the Rams lost their first match of the trip (finishing with a 6-1 record), the day was still a great way to close out the tour.

It seems only fitting that Head Coach Tom Hilbert would provide the final blog entry:

"It's the last Day on the ground in Europe so it's my turn to wrap up the blog. We started the day with a bike tour of downtown Milan, visiting the arch of peace, the castle and ending at the amazing duomo. Then everyone set out to peruse one of the most infamous (and expensive) shopping districts in the world. Not that much was purchased, but It was beautiful none the less.

Then at 5:00p we played our toughest match yet against Club Italia, a federation sponsored 1st division team made up of the best young players in Italy. We competed physically with them but their serve pass game was far superior to ours. We were competitive in two of the four sets but we were not able to win a set. It was a great lesson for us and even in a loss it was fun the play a team at that level.

Now as I wrap up this blog I want to share my thoughts on the tour and what it means to us. One of the themes we have as an athletic department moving into 2017 is "gratitude". How all of us feel about what it means to be involved in CSU athletics and how thankful we are for the support we receive from this amazing community. I've though every day about how lucky I am to get to take my team on a trip like this. The volleyball is valuable and fun but the cultural experience is just as good. I've love so many parts of. This trip but here are the highlights.

1) traveling over 4800 miles from Denver to Amsterdam and playing a match the same evening. And did I mention we rented bikes, toured the city, and Then rode our bikes to The match. Not a normal pregame routine.

2) flying into Split, Croatia and watching Sanja Cizmic see her family in the airport for the first time, knowing our Ram supporters helped her get there. Then watching her as she showed her teammates around her amazing home town. It was so beautiful and she was so proud.

3) Meeting up with our guide, Kiki Koncar, who I met 14 years earlier on one of these tours as a player for Ljubljana. Back when Bri Frech was a player for CSU. Then seeing them bond as friends. We love you Kiki.

4) watching the players eyes as they walked out of the train tunnel into Montarossa Cinque Terre for the first time. Then watching them explore all five towns and finally seeing them gaze off the terrace of our hotel in Riomaggiore after an exhausting day of hiking. This was my personal "bucket list" destination so I was glad to see. The players enjoying it so much.

5) competing their tails off in a five set match against the club from Lurano, late at night in a hot and humid gym. Then after the match watching Katie Oleksak and the setter from Lurano embrace each other in respect. They grew up continents away but connected in their mutual love for the game and respect for each other's talent.

I've coached at CSU for 20 years and taken teams on 5 European tours. This experience is without a doubt one of the most valuable things we can do for a player and a team. They'll never forget it. They will tell these stories forever. I'm so grateful to all who have helped us do this. It means so much in the lives of a collegiate student athlete.
