Lower urinary tract infections are among the most common human bacterial infections, but extension to the kidneys is rare. This has been attributed to mechanical forces, such as urine flow, that prevent the ascent of bladder microbes. Here, we show that the regional hypersalinity, required for the kidney's urine-concentrating function, instructs epithelial cells to produce chemokines that localize monocyte-derived mononuclear phagocytes (MNPs) to the medulla. This hypersaline environment also increases the intrinsic bactericidal and neutrophil chemotactic activities of MNPs to generate a zone of defense. Because MNP positioning and function are dynamically regulated by the renal salt gradient, we find that patients with urinary concentrating defects are susceptible to kidney infection. Our work reveals a critical accessory role for the homeostatic function of a vital organ in optimizing tissue defense.

Japan's ADIZ was established in 1969, which covers most of its exclusive economic zone. Japan makes no demands on aircraft flying through, unless they are landing in Japan. The ADIZ was revised in the same year that the U.S.-Japan Okinawa Reversion Treaty provided for the return of the Ryukyu Islands and the Dait Islands to Japan in 1972. Japan's ADIZ was created by the United States Armed Forces during the post-WWII Allied occupation, with the western border at 123 degrees east.[11] This resulted in only the eastern half of Yonaguni Island being part of Japan's ADIZ and the western half being part of Taiwan's ADIZ. On 25 June 2010, Japan extended its ADIZ around Yonaguni 22 km westwards.[12] This led to an overlapping with sections of Taiwan's ADIZ. However, Taiwanese foreign affairs officials said that it does not make any difference, as an understanding has been reached between the two parties on how to handle it.[13] According to China Network Television on 24 November 2013, China and Russia do not recognize Japan's ADIZ.[citation needed]

The People's Republic of China announced the establishment of what it called its East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone on 23 November 2013[14] defining an ADIZ as a zone that allowed a coastal state to "identify, monitor, control and react to aircraft entering this zone with potential air threats."[15] Despite several international protests, China's move received broad domestic support.[16]

The Chinese Air Force Command Academy began planning for an ADIZ after the Hainan Island incident and in May 2013 had suggested an ADIZ that covered China's exclusive economic zone, but this was expanded during review by the PLA to the current area.[18]

Promptly after the announcement, Japan Air Self-Defense Force sent two F-15 fighter jets to intercept two Chinese aircraft entering the air zone nearby the Senkaku Islands, which is included in the newly announced Chinese ADIZ.[25]

On 25 November, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the measures one-sidedly imposed rules set by the Chinese military on all flights in the zone, and violate the freedom to fly above open sea, a general principle under the international law, "the measures by the Chinese side have no validity whatsoever on Japan, and we demand China revoke any measures that could infringe upon the freedom of flight in international airspace. It can invite an unexpected occurrence and it is a very dangerous thing as well." He denounced China's declaration as a dangerous attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea through coercion, vowed to protect Japan's air and sea space, and demanded that Beijing "revoke any measures that could infringe upon the freedom of flight in international airspace".[26]

Tokyo brought the matter to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation throughout the world.[27] Australia, Britain and the United States supported Japan's proposal, but China reacted sharply against the proposal.[28] Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida stated that Japan would coordinate closely with the United States, the ROK, and others on demanding a revocation of the ADIZ measures,[29] while describing China as "engaging in profoundly dangerous acts that unilaterally change the status quo".[30] Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said that "it's important for both sides to take a calm approach and deal with the situation according to international norms."[31] He also denied Beijing's claim that it scrambled fighter jets in response to Self-Defense Forces aircraft that had entered China's new air defense identification zone, saying "there have been no abnormal situations, such as (Chinese) aircraft suddenly approaching (SDF planes in the ADIZ), as announced by China yesterday". A Japanese official described the Chinese report is a "sheer fabricated story".[32]

Although the ADIZ announced by Beijing overlaps by a relatively small 23 000 square kilometers with the identification zone of Taiwan (Republic of China),[37][38] official reaction from Taipei was initially muted, leading to protests from the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and some academics that President Ma Ying-jeou's government was failing to assert Taiwan's sovereignty.[39][40] On 29 November caucus leaders of both the DPP and ruling KMT party signed a joint statement calling on President Ma's administration to lodge a "stern protest" with Beijing.[41] On 1 December, the 70th anniversary of the Cairo Declaration, Ma reasserted Taiwan's claim to the Diaoyutai islands and called on affected governments to peacefully negotiate and pursue the "East China Sea Peace Initiative" he had proposed the previous year.[42]

A U.S. State Department statement called China's establishment of the zone a "unilateral action [that] constitutes an attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea," adding that "Freedom of overflight and other internationally lawful uses of sea and airspace are essential to prosperity, stability, and security in the Pacific. We don't support efforts by any State to apply its ADIZ procedures to foreign aircraft not intending to enter its national airspace. The United States does not apply its ADIZ procedures to foreign aircraft not intending to enter U.S. national airspace. We urge China not to implement its threat to take action against aircraft that do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing."[45]

Taiwan reported on Thursday a second day of large-scale Chinese air force incursions into its air defense identification zone, with its defense ministry saying that over 24 hours it had spotted 21 aircraft, amid Beijing's military pressure campaign.

Taiwan's defense ministry said the aircraft, 17 J-10 fighters and four J-16 fighters, had flown into the southwestern corner of Taiwan's air defense identification zone, according to a map the ministry released.

When you see that a defense is called cover and then a number, that number is referring to the number of deep coverage responsibilities. Cover 2, 3 and 4 are most common. In these coverages, the field is divided evenly between the players responsible for the coverage. Most of these coverages have both, a man and a zone coverage option, but I have included mostly zone looks with a max coverage, meaning there are the most number of defensive players dropping back into coverage. I have included a few blitzes, including our favorite, the ALL OUT.

Now you may ask, why call man over zone or vice versa. In man coverage, you can have tighter coverage on the receivers. The biggest drawback of man coverage is that you have to be confident that your coverage players are as good or better than the receivers. You'll see bigger plays in a missed man coverage assignment than in zone. Now, while zone may be easier to cover your deficiencies in talent, it's going to open up holes all over the field. Where those holes are will be determined by the coverage itself, the talent of the defender and the number of routes run through that zone.

For example, take a coverage that has 3 underneath zones like a cover 3 blitz or cover 4. You can take the middle linebacker to one side of his zone by running a receiver through it, settling on the left side. Then the offense can take another receiver and run it through the zone on the right (typically called a curl zone) and settle towards the sideline. Now, you can see that those two defenders have just opened a huge hole up the seam where NO ONE is. This is how you can defeat zone coverages and "find holes."

One of the telltale signs of Cover 2, especially zone, will be the alignment of the CBs and their depth off the line of scrimmage. In zone, they will be right up on the line of scrimmage and will use a bump technique. This slows down the receivers off the line and will allow the back of the coverage to expand and get into better position, specifically the linebackers.

This coverage mixes cornerbacks and safeties dropping into coverage, each responsible for a deep third of the field. Cover 3 mostly has zone in front of it. Generally speaking, the closest defender to the zone is responsible, however if the defensive coordinator is trying to get cute and confuse the QB in his pre-snap reads, he could alter those responsibilities.

Here are a couple of our Cover 3 zone blitzes, including ALL OUT. The blitzing man can be anybody. If it is one of those generally responsible for a deep coverage (say the Boundary Corner above), then another player will float back and fill that coverage (like the Boundary Safety). If it's someone up front, you are basically sacrificing that zone. You will try to expand the other zones to make up for it, but the bigger the zone, the more likely it is to have a hole in it. ff782bc1db
