The fruit's main strength is that the user can detonate their entire body or limbs in a manner akin to a living human bomb, generating powerful explosive forces that harm anything but the user itself. The explosive quality extends to bodily emissions such as mucus and breath, giving the user the capacity to utilize ranged attacks should they find ways to weaponize those substances.

The fruit also grants immunity against all other explosions, including even cannonballs,[4] as well as the ability to evaluate their quality. For example, Gem commented that Usopp's Gunpowder Star tasted bad because he was using low quality gunpowder.[5]

However, it seems that the ability only activates when the user initiates contact with something, or at will, as both Zoro and Luffy have been seen hitting Gem without him exploding. Also, despite the user's explosion immunity, they are not particularly resistant to fire.[6] Other than that, this fruit has no apparent weaknesses aside from the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.

Ever have the feeling your fruit trees were going in cycles? Well, it might not be your imagination. Some species of fruit trees can fall into what is called "alternate bearing", meaning one year you get a massive crop and the next year your tree sets hardly anything. Alternate bearing has been observed in apples, pears, plums, apricots, cranberries, blueberries, pecans, citrus, and avocado. There are some species and some varieties that are more susceptible to this pattern than others. I wish there was some sort of exhaustive list out there of varieties particularly prone to this. For your edification I will list the few that I've found through scouring the internet and university articles.

So what causes alternate bearing? Often it is an external thing, like the weather, that can kick a tree into the alternate bearing (AB) pattern. Once the pattern is established it can continue for many years unless there is intervention. The best intervention for a tree already in an alternate bearing habit or to prevent a tree from falling into it is thinning the fruit early.

Thinning helps even out the fruit load because the current year's crop is in competition with next year's blossoms. A heavy current crop saps too much energy from next year's blossoms and so you get a poor crop next year. It might be hard to remove fruit, but in the long run it will improve your tree's health and productivity.

When and how to thin? Most recommend thinning 30-40 days after full bloom as the most effective time to do it. For apples and pears you want to cluster thin. Pinch off all of the fruit except for the largest one. Optimally, leave one apple or pear for every six inches of branch. Take off all of the ones that show damage by weather or insects.

It's important to destroy insect-damaged fruit, especially in apples and pears because they could be infected with codling moth larvae (which are the leading cause of wormy apples and pears). Codling moth larvae burrow into the fruit so if you leave the fruit on the ground around the tree or even in a compost heap (unless you're running a super hot pile!) the larvae can continue their life-cycle.

Native peoples throughout North America have used conifer cones in many ways. Seeds were ground up and made into a powder that served as a delicacy when mixed with deer fat. Dried juniper berries were mixed with fish oil or animal fat, as well as with other fruits, such as mountain cranberries, and made into the original PowerBar. Juniper berries were also brewed as a hot beverage. When all else failed, green twigs and cones of spruce were boiled in maple syrup to produce a potent beer. Medicinally, spruce cones were relied upon to cure toothaches, indigestion, diabetes, hyperactivity, fever, pneumonia, arthritis, colds, snake bites, tapeworms, and urinary problems. An all-purpose apothecary for breeding was helpful for contraception, inducing labor, assisting women after childbirth, and curing venereal diseases.

Passionola is one of a few brands of passion fruit products that emerged in the 1930s and 1940s amidst a boom in passion fruit cultivation in the San Diego area. Tropical fruit, and passion fruit in particular, is challenging to distribute over long distances, so capturing the flavor in a shelf-stable, processed form was a compelling commercial solution. These syrups initially targeted the wholesale soda fountain market, and not long after, the drinks market, too. The brand Passionola seems to date to 1931, and was created by one of the main figures in the passion fruit boom: Victor Kremer, an industrious German immigrant.

Another significant agricultural boom was already underway in the territory of Hawaii. The main Hawaiian crop was pineapple, but other tropical fruits were grown there, too, and exported in various forms to California ports.

Hawaiian Punch is still a flavor profile seared into the minds of generations that grew up in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. The brand seems to have lost considerable ground in more recent decades. The culinary revolution has diversified interest in flavor, and even tricky fresh tropical fruits like passion fruit are available in many grocery stores. Today, the nondescript, anodyne fruit punch flavor profile is just not that interesting outside flights of nostalgia.
