Sweet Sea was produced by Tomy in 1985. It was a very short lived sea themed series which included one Sweet Sea the Mermaid Doll together with her loyal, underwater steed and best friend, Sea Star (made as an inflatable floatie when he and Sweet Sea were sold together), her other four friends, Goldie the Goldfish, Purrhsa the Catfish, Mudpuppy the Dogfish, and Star Fishy the Starfish along with their own fashion, cosmetic accessories by Avon, jewelery of necklaces, pins, and rings and a 30-min animated video (which can be found on Youtube).
And after watching the Sweet Sea's story, I just thought that she should be added to the list of forgotten toys and/or cartoons that deserve to be rebooted. I mean why should this lovely, little mermaid and her friends be only present in the past?
Anyway, as you can see here, Sweet Sea has been drawn here with her friends, along with her adorable, Merbaby Sister, Baby Brooke (from the animated video and who sadly was never made as a toy like her older sister was), the Magical Royal Necklace with the power of protecting the ocean and everything living in it, and even the two, nasty sea scums only seen in Sweet Sea's film, Sheeba, the two-armed and pink-haired, Sea Serpent, and her little sidekick, Squidney, the Pirate Squid. I really hope the Tomy toy company might consider bringing Sweet Sea back, as long as she and her friends and enemies' appearances aren't too drastically changed from their lovely 80s look. I don't own the rights to this brand.

Do you work on friendship skills during your speech therapy sessions? Is that even a speech/language area to work on? Like many of you, I had that question about areas of social skills at one time. But after doing my research, my answer is a resounding yes! Find out why and download some really helpful freebies.
So, I started reading up on friendship skills and soon realized that this was a guarded way of letting me know that they lacked the social language skills to develop and maintain friendships. Was this a speech/language therapy problem? I think so.
Like all special education needs, it takes a village to help students. But, take a look at this summary of 4 skills needed for friendship in this basic article that is easily understood by parents. Which of those skills do not have a language base? Zero.
Friendships are based on more than a simple give and take at this stage. Students have trust in their friends, help them when needed, and share their thoughts and secrets. They work out problems, but can feel jealous when their friend acquires a new friend. So friendships are often in pairs. This happens mostly with girls, who tend to have more intimate friendships at this stage than boys do.
You can easily teach the language of friendship while working on your current social skills and language goals. The trick is to first teach the skill using your typical methods, whether it is producing complex sentences, making inferences, or any of the other language-based skills needed. Then, instead of moving on to a new goal, apply the newly learned skill to a friendship scenario.
For example, kindness and friendship skills are easily used as a February theme, and you probably own social skills materials that can be adapted to that theme! For your older students, just expand the skill with themes like compassion, respectfulness, or cooperation. DD's favourite with friends is a big rainbow platter. We have a big plate full of colourful salad vegetables, old meat, cheese, pitta bread, etc. and then a pot of hummous in the middle. I served it for DD and 3 of her friends today (very autumnal day) and it went down very well.
