Background:  Germinated barley foodstuff (GBF) is a prebiotic foodstuff that effectively increases luminal butyrate production by stimulating the growth of protective bacteria. In the first pilot study, GBF has been shown to reduce both clinical activity and mucosal inflammation in ulcerative colitis (UC). The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of GBF in the treatment of UC in a multicenter open control trial.

A sustainable food supply is an ever-growing public and planetary health concern influenced by food culture, food practices, and dietary patterns. Globally, the consumption of plant foods that offer physiological and biochemical benefits is increasing. In recent years, products made from yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) tubers and leaves, e.g., in the form of syrup, powder, and herbal tea, have steadily emerged with scientific evidence to validate their possible health claims. Yacon was introduced to New Zealand in 1966, and its products can now be produced on a commercial scale. This paper reviews literature published mainly in the last 10 years concerning the health-related properties of yacon as a wholesome foodstuff and its bioactive components, e.g., fructooligosaccharides. Literature was sourced from Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCO Health, and Google Scholar up to June 2019. The potential markets for yacon in the field of food technology and new dietotherapy applications are discussed. Furthermore, the unique features of New Zealand-produced yacon syrup are introduced as a case study. The paper explores the scientific foundation in response to the growing public interest in why and how to use yacon.

Vitamin E is a group of isoprenoid chromanols with different biological activities. It comprises eight oil-soluble compounds: four tocopherols, namely, -, -, -, and -tocopherols; and four tocotrienols, namely, -, -, , and -tocotrienols. Vitamin E isomers are well-known for their antioxidant activity, gene-regulation effects, and anti-inflammatory and nephroprotective properties. Considering that vitamin E is exclusively synthesized by photosynthetic organisms, animals can only acquire it through their diet. Plant-based food is the primary source of vitamin E; hence, oils, nuts, fruits, and vegetables with high contents of vitamin E are mostly consumed after processing, including industrial processes and home-cooking, which involve vitamin E profile and content alteration during their preparation. Accordingly, it is essential to identify the vitamin E content and profile in foodstuff to match daily intake requirements. This review summarizes recent advances in vitamin E chemistry, metabolism and metabolites, current knowledge on their contents and profiles in raw and processed plant foods, and finally, their modern developments in analytical methods.

Germinated barley foodstuff (GBF) is a prebiotic which increases luminal butyrate production by modulating the microfloral distribution. GBF has been shown to reduce both clinical activity and mucosal damage in active ulcerative colitis (UC) with mild to moderate activity. However, the efficacy of GBF in patients with UC during the remission stage is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of GBF as a maintenance therapy in patients with UC while in remission. Fifty-nine patients with UC in remission according to Rachmilewitz's clinical activity index (CAI) score of

I suppose that I could probably summarize that to "Is foodstuff a mass or count noun?" but I wasn't entirely certain if that would get me the wrong answer. I've always used "foodstuffs" when referring to actual components for recipes, but I could see an argument only using the singular since, after all, it's a noun which covers all of the components at once. I thought of submitting it to "The Word Detective" but it seems like more of a case of usage.

Dictionaries seem to indicate it in the singular without noting pluralization, but there are also many example sentences which use "foodstuffs" such as the Tarzan quotes I found here: "The she was for Tarzan--all that he desired was to bury his snout in the foodstuffs of the Tarmangani." and "They appeared to be raiding parties, for they drove goats and cows along with them and there were native porters laden with grain and other foodstuffs."

foodstuff, noun : a substance with food value: as a : the raw material of food before or after processing {a bountiful crop of cereal foodstuffs} b : an element of nutrition (as protein, carbohydrate, vitamin) {the sponge obtains its necessary foodstuffs from the plankton}

I'd say that identifying count usages of 'foodstuff' (shown by the acceptability of a numeral in the actual example) are complicated by the fact that numerals are rarely used alongside foodstuff/s anyway. Certainly, 'foodstuffs' takes a plural verb form.

Consumers are repeatedly confronted with scandals in the foodstuff industry, most recently the Fipronil egg scandal which took place in the laying hen farming industry in the Netherlands and Lower Saxony (Germany). What do foodstuff producers and marketers do to avoid cases like these? The increasing costs in the area of modern foodstuff analysis suggest that they do a lot.

Regular checks and analyses guarantee the quality and the safety of the food we consume daily. There are clear statutory requirements for substances harmful to health and the highest quantities of them that may be present in foodstuffs. In foodstuff analysis we do our utmost to find evidence of any potentially harmful substances in food.

As food is perishable in many cases, the analysis has to be quick and reliable. GERSTEL offers a range of automated solutions for the field of foodstuff analysis. Applications based on GERSTEL technology are being constantly developed and optimized in cooperation with recognized and accredited institutes and scientific establishments with many years of experience in the field of foodstuff analysis.

Quality assurance covers a range of activities that have the aim of ensuring product quality by recognizing faults in the manufactured product and eliminating the causes of them. The strict regulations and directives in the foodstuffs industry mean there is a high demand for quality control and the analytical monitoring of raw materials and products. Analytical monitoring is often performed using laboratory analysis that is both time-consuming and expensive.

Packaging is intended to protect foodstuffs from damage due to mechanical effects and contamination. Finding out as much as possible about the chemical interaction between packaging and product is of great interest for food manufacturers. What happens if the packaging itself emits substances not suitable for consumption? The transfer of such undesired compounds from the packaging to the food product is known as migration.

Mycotoxins arise in foodstuffs as a result of fungal infections, contact with other toxic organisms (e.g. algae) or through internal processes in the foodstuff that occur during storage. They can be extremely dangerous for humans and animals alike and cause illnesses or even death. Checking for mycotoxins in food or animal feed it therefore critically important.

There are statutory limits for the innocuous and technically unavoidable quantities levels of pesticides that may be present in foodstuffs. Residual antibiotics in foodstuffs is unproblematic from a toxicological point of view, however there is still a risk of the growth and reproduction of resistant germs.

Unwanted, potentially harmful by-products can form when foodstuffs are processed, for example by refining or heating at high temperatures. These process contaminants can always occur when the foodstuff substances undergo chemical changes and toxic effects can result from these changes.

Not only did the Covid-19 pandemic threaten health security, it has also led to a lasting disruption of food supply lines. Noodles, bread and flour were temporarily unavailable in supermarkets. In addition, it has led to a rapid shortage of certain basic necessities, which can be defined as foodstuffs that public or private actors consider to be a priority, fundamental or sensitive for the vital needs of populations. This notion of basic necessities exists in all historical periods but must be thought of in contemporary times in the context of a nutrition transition that has been taking place in several parts of the world since the 17th century, with proto-industrialisation and a new stage of globalisation. We study how actors address the shortage of basic foodstuffs in times of crisis as a security issue (political, sanitary, climatic or economic), when production can fall, when markets are disrupted and when the link between governments and societies is questioned.

Axis 3: This analysis of the public management of basic foodstuffs must be confronted with a study of the ways in which the population eats and considers basic necessities. This axis deals with foodways, defined as the cultural, social and economic practices relating to the production and consumption of food. The analysis developed here consists therefore of understanding whether the products deemed necessary by the authorities correspond to the reality of consumption in times of crisis. A first approach can be qualitative, with visual archives, literary writings or private archives. A more quantitative approach is also possible, through, for example, the study of production, import and export statistics or prices.

Bread has become a universal foodstuff and one we consume daily although it contains just four simple ingredients used in an incredible variety of ways. This variety can be expressed through numerous factors:

In the 2023 budget speech, the Minister of Finance announced a tax relief measure to address the load shedding problem the country is facing. A diesel refund, limited to 80% of the Road Accident Fuel (RAF) levy, was to be extended to the manufacturers of foodstuffs for the use of diesel in generating electricity. The minister stated that the aim of the implementation of this relief was to limit the impact of power cuts on food prices. This refund would be in effect from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2025. 2351a5e196
