For the purpose of cohesion, we are looking for a way to continue the use of Simplex font in both AutoCAD and Revit, so that we can use both programs to produce Sheet Sets that look similar, despite coming from two different programs. I've tried everything I can think of to increase the line weight or darken the appearance of the Simplex font in Revit (2021), but it always prints "lightly", or grey-colored instead of black. Are there any experts out there that have overcome this font-syncing issue, or do we need to start thinking about doing away with Simplex as out font of choice?

My company has been using Simplex with AutoCAD for years. I was tasked with trying to 'sync' the two programs, so I was hoping to be able to darken or thicken the Simplex font for Revit, as it always shows up very light on the printed page. Unfortunately, nothing I've tried has been successful, so we have CAD Simplex that prints fine, and Revit Simplex that can barely be seen. It's looking like we might have to proceed with a font other than Simplex for Revit eventually.

I wouldn't call it pain. Editing families is not that difficult and since they should be vetted before being placed in a project, changing any text font that you might find won't take long at all but since you will be replacing Simplex. It seems like choice of font is not significant. Arial is a good choice.

Many drawings are now being produced in applications such as Corel

or Surfer, and none of the available Windows fonts I have seen

resemble the Autocad font. Does anyone know of a Windows font

that is a perfect match for the Autocad Simplex font, and how

to obtain it.Please reply by E-mailThanks;

AFAIK, simplex is designed to work with plotters. It is not designed

to look like old hand-drawn stencils, but rather to minimize the number

of moves that a plotter pen has to make in order to minimize the time

needed to make a plot (while still maintaining the legibility of the

drawn letters). (And if you have a slow pen plotter you will know

what I mean: try using duplex or even triplex fonts in plots and you

will notice the time difference.) The name simplex just means "a single

pass of the pen"; so it is not one font, but a class of fonts which can

be drawn this way.--

Try the True type font called "Monospace 821 BT", which is included in the

r13/common/fonts directory. It also comes in bold and italic versions. It may

not be exactly the same as the roman simplex font, but it comes close.--

Yes, apparently I was misled, the Font is apparently the standard AutoCad

font Romans, as simplex, so I guess we are looking for a

simplex Romans font.--------------------------------------

I would be looking at what your client standards ask for for example our local Rail DOT use TT Arial but the make it act like arial narrow as it was adopted before arial narrow was available... so we have to have different Height to width in msnt but they have different std for acad drgs as thhats another dept with a different font std ( I suspect they cant do differnt height to width in acad)... anyway before you go setting up standards make sure your got the client requirements first as it will drive you nuts later ....

You could also try ISO CAD fonts(isocpeur.ttf) but I would recommend to stick to default Windows fonts like Courier new,Trebuchet MS.

Actually Bentley and Autodesk should have pushed some universal CAD font to Microsoft Windows a long ago. There is no real benefit of using TrueType font if you still have to deliver it seperately. It is at last possible to embed custom linestyles in DGN but not fonts.

The font is indeed a Hershey vector font: Hershey Simplex Light. This user on Github has the font definition files (otf) that you can copy/clone into your system and set as the default fonts in your matplotlibrc. Not all the characters are included, but you can use fontforge to open the otf and/or sfd files and merge/copy/create missing glyphs.

I work in an Architectural/Engineering firm and am jealous of the fonts the architects use on their drawings. We, the engineers, use simplex and write in all caps. Is there anything better that is used?

The last specification, our client lamented, required several volumes to bind the documents into manageable sizes. "Can we reduce the font size and use duplex printing to reduce the paper volume?" he asked. Considering that nearly every client has a unique spec format, we said, "Sure we can."

So off we went to create a custom template to format all the specifications for this next project. Reduce the font size 25% from 12 point to 9 point. Change the page set up to duplex (double sided) printing. But the client asked that headers and footers be mirrored for odd and even pages. Not a problem since it only requires a few more lines of macro code.

It's a balance, so be careful the reduced font size does not hinder readability. Remember some folks involved in construction, including me, are battling maturing eyesight - making reading small font sizes increasingly difficult. Bifocals and magnifying glasses may be common, and necessary, tools.

--> Item Div 02 -14 Div 21 - 28 Div 31 -33 Sections 54 94 9 Pages (original) 546 949 62 Pages (reduced) 428 952 44 Savings (pages) 118 (3) 18 Savings (percent) 21.6 -- 29% So what happened with the Division 21 - 28 sections? Reducing the font actually increased the number of pages. Well not exactly. There are manual page breaks and hidden text strewn throughout the files. After deleting all of this, the total page count was 714 or a 24.7% reduction.

What I discovered is that Microsoft Word adjusts the line height with the font size. Reducing the font size proportionally reduces the line height, regardless the line width. But the 25% font height reduction does not translate to a 25% page reduction.

Nevertheless, Reducing the font size, and allowing Microsoft to automatically adjust the line spacing resulted in a total of 1186 pages, duplex printed onto 593 pieces of paper resulting in a set of specifications that fit into a single 3 inch binder when printed on 20 lb paper. The resulting printed documents will cost less to produce and less to ship and presumably will be easier to reference during construction since they are in a single bound volume.

Using Hershey Vector Fonts The Hershey vector fonts used by IDL were digitized by Dr. A.V. Hershey of the Naval Weapons Laboratory. Characters in the vector fonts are stored as equations, and can be scaled and rotated in three dimensions. They are drawn as lines on the current graphics device, and are displayed quickly and efficiently by IDL. The Hershey vector fonts are built into IDL itself, and are always available.

To use the Hershey vector font system with IDL Direct Graphics (this is the default behavior), either set the value of the IDL system variable !P.FONT to -1 (negative one), or set the FONT keyword of one of the Direct Graphics routines to -1. To use the vector font system with IDL Object Graphics, consult IDLgrFont. To use the vectors fonts with IDL's Graphics functions, see the TEXT function.

The default Hershey vector font (Font 3, Simplex Roman) follows the ISO Latin 1 Encoding scheme and contains many international characters. The illustration of this font below can be used to find the codes for the special characters.

For example, suppose you want to display some text with an Angstrom symbol in it. Looking at the chart for font 3, we see that the Angstrom symbol has code 197. Non-printable characters can be represented in IDL using octal or hexadecimal notation and the STRING function. So the Angstrom can be printed by inserting a STRING(197B) character in a Direct Graphics text string as follows:

Different character sets map Greek characters to keyboard keys differently. The Microsoft Windows Symbol font, for example, maps the capital letter Chi () to the Latin capital C, whereas the Hershey Greek fonts map the capital Gamma () to the latin capital C. Use the font tables under "Hershey Vector Font Samples" to determine the mapping between Greek and Latin character sets.

The EFONT procedure is a widget application that allows you to edit the Hershey fonts and save the results. Use this routine to add special characters or completely new, custom fonts to the Hershey fonts.

The following figures show samples of various Hershey vector-drawn fonts. The SHOWFONT command was used to create these figures. For example, to display the following figure on the screen, you would use the command: e24fc04721
