I am working on some research related to FreeType2 Driver modules. I started my study by reading the Windows font Driver module (Because of its simplicity compared to TrueType and Type1). This Driver module works when a file with format .FNT or .FON is requested from client application.

So, as a first step i want to install some windows font of extension .FNT or .FON. After searching for quite a long time i figured out that .FNT is not used any more in windows so i cant download it. P.S. .FON format is used in windows 10 its a raster type font. So i decided to copy this file (From windows fonts folder) to my usr/share/FON/ directory. It copied successfully and icon was like an executable file in Linux but when i used fontconfig for updating with fc-cache and than listing with fc-list i couldn't see that.

A font can be embedded only if it containsa setting by the font vendor that permits it to be embedded. Embeddingprevents font substitution when readers view or print the file,and ensures that readers see the text in its original font. If you have difficulty copying and pasting text from a PDF, first check if the problem font is embedded. Go to Document Properties from the hamburger menu (Windows) or the File menu (macOS). Then, select the Fonts tab in the Document Properties dialog box. For an embedded font, try changing the point where it's embedded rather than sending it inside the PostScript file. Distill the PDF without embedding that font. Then, open the PDF in Acrobat and embed the font using the Preflight fixup.

The Acrobat installation includes width-only versions of many common Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts, therefore Distiller can then access these fonts in Acrobat. Make sure that the fonts are available on your computer. (In Windows, choose Complete when you install Acrobat, or choose Custom and select the Asian Language Support option under the View Adobe PDF category. In Mac OS, these fonts are installed automatically.)

To specify other font folders for Distiller to search, in Acrobat Distiller, choose Settings > Font Locations. Then in the dialog box, click Add to add a font folder. Select Ignore TrueType Versions Of Standard PostScript Fonts to exclude TrueType fonts that have the same name as a font in the PostScript 3 font collection.

You can create a printable previewof your document that substitutes default fonts for any text formattedin fonts that are available on your local computer but are not embeddedin the PDF. This preview can help you decide whether to embed thoselocal fonts in the PDF, to achieve the look you want for your document.

This table gives global information about the font. The bounding box values should be computed using only glyphs that have contours. Glyphs with no contours should be ignored for the purposes of these calculations.

Note that the macStyle bits must agree with the OS/2 table fsSelection bits. The fsSelection bits are used over the macStyle bits in Microsoft Windows. The PANOSE values and 'post' table values are ignored for determining bold or italic fonts.

Note that, in a variable font with TrueType outlines, the left side bearing for each glyph must equal xMin, and bit 1 in the flags field must be set. Also, in a variable font, the minimum or maximum x or y values of control points can vary, and a tight bounding rectangle containing the outline or all points for an instance of any given glyph may be smaller or larger than for the default instance of that glyph. The xMin, yMin, xMax and yMax values in this table might or might not encompass the derived glyph outlines for an instance. Also, variation deltas are not provided for these values. If an application requires a bounding rectangle that encompasses the glyphs for a non-default instance of the font, the derived glyph outlines for the instance should be processed to determine a bounding rectangle.

Microsoft Word allows you to embed a TrueType font in a Word document so that you can view and edit the font, if licensing rights allow. You can do this even if you open the document on a computer on which the font is not installed.

Not all fonts are licensed so that they can be embedded. If a font can be embedded, it will increase the file size of your document by approximately the size of the TrueType font (.ttf) file.

NOTE: Some fonts treat normal, bold, italic, and bold-italic as separate font .ttf files. In this case, the file size of your document is larger when you use bold and italic formatting than it is if you do not.

If a font does not have a bold, italic, or bold-italic version, Windows generates bold or italic from the core font. In this case, the file size increases when you use bold or italic formatting.

Licensing rights for font embedding determine how the font may be embedded in the document.
