Flashbacks take place in the past, just like the rest of your story. But there needs to be a distinction between pasts, or it will confuse your reader. If your story takes place in the simple past, the flashback needs to take place in the perfect past.

Ideally, a flashback should only last for a brief period of time. That time may range from a few minutes to a few hours, but avoid going longer than that. A flashback that takes place over the course of several days (or longer) can drain your present narrative of its power. Every minute spent in flashback is like a year in the simple past.

Fundraising activity by India-focused private equity and venture capital firms slowed this year as limited partners remained cautious due to high interest rates and uncertainty about the global economy, but a few fund managers still managed to cross the finish line. A sharp slowdown in startup funding during 2023 also prompted ......

In Story Genius, Lisa Cron recommends writing in full the key scenes which have turned your character into the person they are at the beginning of your story. I suspect this is one of the dangers of using the Story Genius method: writers are tempted to include these backstory scenes as flashbacks, because they have written them and because Lisa Cron says:

We expect scenes to have action. Interrupting an action scene to deliver a five-page flashback (however exciting) is as annoying as interrupting a scene to deliver a five-page info dump or five pages of barely relevant interior monologue.

In an interview with Jennifer Gilmore from The Rumpus, Lee addresses the issue of time as it relates to his understanding of psychology and character. Though he uses the term flashback to describe what he does, he uses it in such a nuanced way that it feels like an extension of what Silber means.

In some respects, I enjoyed the effects of slowed time while reading The Portrait of a Lady. My life, experienced on a day-to-day basis, moves much too quickly. I always feel under the pressure of time, of knowing exactly what time it is and matching that time to where I should be. 5:00 a.m. Getting out of bed. 8:00 a.m. Driving to work. 4:15 p.m. Driving to soccer practice. 6:30, Starting dinner. Perhaps a category that Silber is missing is modern time, in which the story races from one time to the next, one clipped scene after another, with detours that accrue no meaning, such as going to the wrong field on the wrong day at the wrong time.

You can also improve this effect if you pan or tilt toward a highlight in the scene, such as a window or house fire. Both methods will produce a flashback transition as you see in the video below.

Cross-processing footage to signify a flashback is a great approach. Cross-processing involves lab technicians or photographers deliberately using the incorrect chemical solution for processing a film stock. As a result, the film would process with an unnatural color and with high contrast.

Flashbacks always include an audio effect to accompany visual cues. Typically, when storylines transition into flashbacks using the bloom or something similar, we also hear a swoosh. Secondly, when a flashback scene uncovers a hidden mystery, you will usually hear reverberated audio. 2351a5e196
