The player assumes the role of a night guard who must survive five (or more) nights in the restaurant, while avoiding being killed by the animation. Players can use cameras, doors, lights and other tools to track and counter the animatronics. However, players have limited powers and resources, and must use them wisely.
As players progress through the games, they will uncover more clues and secrets about the Five nights at freddy's backstory. They learn that the animator is haunted by the spirits of children who were killed by a serial killer named William Afton, also a restaurateur and creator of animatronics. They also know that William Afton experimented with remnants, a substance that can give life to machines and preserve souls. William Afton has also created various twisted versions of animatronics, such as Springtrap, Scraptrap, and Glitchtrap.
