Scandal Makers (Korean: ) is a 2008 South Korean film written and directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol and starring Cha Tae-hyun, Park Bo-young and Wang Seok-hyeon. This was director Kang's first film and the highest grossing Korean film of the year.

Former teen idol Nam Hyeon-soo (Cha Tae-hyun) is now in his thirties and works as a radio DJ. A young woman named Hwang Jeong-nam (Park Bo-young) sends stories about her life as a single mother to the radio station Hyeon-soo works at, telling him she is going to meet her father. He then finds out that he's her father when she shows up at his apartment with her son Ki-dong (Wang Seok-hyeon). She tells him that her real name is Jae-in and that her mother was Hyeon-soo's first love Jeong-nam. Hyeon-soo doesn't believe it at first, so they undergo a DNA test and the results confirm that they're related. Jae-in dreams of performing on stage as a singer, but Hyeon-soo fears that if she does, their paternity scandal might get out. Because of Jae-in's rising popularity, Ki-dong's father Park Sang-yoon (Im Ji-kyu) finds her. They meet and chat, with Sang-yoon initially under the mistaken assumption that Jae-in is romantically involved with Hyeon-soo. When Ki-dong later goes missing at Jae-in's performance, Hyeon-soo realizes that he really does care for his daughter and grandson. After news about his daughter and grandson got leaked, he wasn't faced with damage to his career due to taking responsibility of them in the first place, low popularity, and news about a disgraced film star beating up a scandal gossip journalist. With encouragement from Ki-Dong's kindergarten teacher, he changes his image to a responsible older man, which is warmly received by everyone. At a Christmas recital, Sang-yoon reconciles with Jae-in and Ki-Dong, rekindling their love for each other.

Scandal Makers was released in South Korea on 3 December 2008,[3] and topped the box office on its opening weekend with 473,725 admissions.[4] It continued to chart well finishing with over 8 million tickets sold becoming the highest grossing Korean film of 2008. The second highest grosser was The Good, The Bad, The Weird with 6.6 million tickets,[5] then The Chaser with roughly 5 million tickets sold.[6]

Boosting Bronte-Mania: Critics and audiences alike seem to have really enjoyed the film, which is great news for Bronte fans (and Bronte-related authors like me). I hope it encourages even more readers to pick up Wuthering Heights and the other Bronte novels.

Which brings up the following question: Why isn't his daughter Jeong-nam (Park Bo-yeong) the main character of this film? Why don't we see her try on lots of different outfits when her stingy father finally takes her to the mall to buy some nice clothes? Why are we forced to watch his "comic" attempts to keep her a secret instead of her "comic" attempts to fit into his world? I personally would've enjoyed seeing more scenes between her and her love interest the awkward photographer (Lim Ji-gyu) than daddy and his lust interest the school marm (Hwang Woo-seul-hye). Maybe some audiences have a soft spot for the still-cute actor Cha based on his memorable roles in My Sassy Girl and Sad Movie. But me? Not so much. Credit must be given to writer-director Kang Hyeong-cheol, however. With his next film, the infinitely more entertaining Sunny, he put the women front and center. People who learn from their mistakes should be praised. Sound cue: Applause.

A film I've watched at least a dozen times since seeing it a few years back, and each and every time, I find more and more to love about it. While it is pretty predictable, it is so well crafted and confident in its style and comedy, that it more than makes up for its slight predictability. Sometimes its not about coming up with something new, but rather telling a familiar story, just doing so better and with more gravitas.

Hilarity ensues as Hyun-soo attempts to adjust to this new revelation and has to hide it from reporters constantly on the hunt for scandals. The movie was the highest grossing Korean film in the year that it was released.

South Korean neo noir films really got me. NO HOLDS BARRED. Heart-wrenching emotions. Unexpected and odd twists and turns. Bloody scenarios. Full of vengeance. Heartbreaking at some point. Pucha, mapapamura ka na lang minsan.

Story: Nam Hyeon-soo (Cha Tae-hyun) is a radio host and in his thirties. His show is very popular and one of his regular callers, Hwang Jeong-nam (Park Bo-young), is getting special interest from the listeners because of her story. She is a single mother and Hyeon-soo advises her to contact her father, who she finally managed to find. The radio host is flabbergasted when Jeong-nam eventually turns up at his doorstep. She tells him that he is her father and to make things worse also the grandfather of little Ki-Dong (Wang Seuk-hyun). For now Hyeon-soo has no other choice but to let the two live at his place. But he has to keep the whole affair a secret since there is already a reporter very interested in him who is just waiting for a good scandal to arise. When Hyeon-soo's radio show launches a talent contest and his daughter is involved too the situation becomes even more dangerous for him. Jeong-nam has good prospects in the contest and so it only seems to be a matter of time until her true relationship with Hyeon-soo is uncovered.

First, the most obvious problem needs to be pointed out. Cha Tae-hyeon ("Miracle of Giving Fool") may be in his thirties, but to chose him for this role of all people wasn't really smart in respect of the premise. That is because he looks like twenty-something and therefore we never see the radio host as the father of Jeong-nam. Rather, the two are in some way looking like equals. If you would accidentally zap into any scene of this comedy you would even have to assume, that the film centers around a love story between the two. But that's just where the movie's strength gains and defends some ground. Because "Speedy Scandal" isn't a romantic flick after all, despite certain parallels, and it thus spares us the genre-typical corny moments.

Lotte Entertainment decided to make Scandal Makers the first Korean film to screen with English subtitles in its cinemas. The English subtitled prints will play at Lotte cinema Myeongdong Avenue Elle (northern Seoul), Busan Seomyeon, and its Ansan branch in Gyeongi-do.
