Set in a world based on late pre-colonial Mesoamerica, Maya, a warrior princess, is celebrating her fifteenth birthday, but when the underworld gods appear and announce she must pay for her family's misdeeds, everything changes.[citation needed] If she refuses to go along, the world itself will be ravaged by the gods, so she embarks on a quest to fulfill a prophecy that says that three warriors will appear who will help her defeat these gods and save humanity itself from destruction.[1]

In May 2022, Netflix canceled its follow-up miniseries, Kung-Fu Death Punch.[27] Originally conceived as a stand-alone feature film at the 2017 Annecy Film Festival,[28] but transitioned to a 9-episode miniseries follow-up to Maya and the Three sometime after.[29] Showrunner Gutirrez stated in a tweet on Twitter that "the project is not dead. Just not moving forward at Netflix Animation."[30]

Together, the couple went on to create cartoons such as El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera for Nickelodeon. They both worked on Gutierrez's 2014 film The Book of Life, a Day of the Dead-themed movie produced by Guillermo del Toro.

Gutierrez and Equihua lent their voices to play Maya's parents, King and Queen Teca. "The three" are Maya's brothers, Daggers, Shield and Lance, who wear armor designed to look like jaguars. Along with the triplets, voiced by actor Gael Garca Bernal, Maya faces off with Zatz, the prince of bats (voiced by Diego Luna), and a slew of vengeful gods, voiced by a star-studded cast of Latino actors. Alfred Molina plays the god of war, Danny Trejo is the god of earthquakes. Kate del Castillo is the goddess of death and Cheech Marin plays the god of wind and the god of storm. Rosie Perez is the goddess of gators and Rita Moreno is Ah Puch, a goddess who leads Maya on her quest.

The visual style of this film looks and feels very different from films from the big name animation studios. Maya and the Three did a fantastic job with creating this sense of wonder. You just don't know what to expect with every next page you flip to. Kudos to production design Paul Sullivan, art director Gerald de Jesus, head of story Jeff Ranjo and all the artists who worked on the film.

Maya and the Three is an animated epic about a royal warrior family in ancient Mesoamerica and their teenage daughter Maya (voiced by Zoe Saldana). The warrior princess's story begins in the kingdom of Teca on the eve of her coronation. Maya is resentful that her three brothers (the Jaguars, Gael Garca Bernal) get to live the exciting life of warriors while she's stuck in her family's palace training to become a diplomat. She reluctantly agrees to be coronated despite her misgivings. As soon as the crown is placed on her head, the kingdom is visited by Zatz Prince of Batz (Diego Luna), an emissary from the king of the underworld, Lord Mitclan (Alfred Molina). Zatz reveals shocking news, claiming that Maya is actually a princess of the underworld. If she doesn't agree to go with him to the underworld to be sacrified, the entire world will be under attack. Maya and her family resist, triggering a global war between the gods and the humans. A prophesy reveals that three warriors will help Maya, so Maya leaves on an epic adventure to find "the three" who will help her save the world. Soon Chimi the Skull Warrior (Stephanie Beatriz), Rico the Rooster Wizard (Allen Maldonaldo), and Picchu the Puma Barbarian (Gabriel Iglesias) join Maya on her quest. Can they defeat the gods, saving Teca and all of humankind in the process?

Jorge R. Gutirrez directs Maya and the Three, which he co-wrote with Silvia Olivas, Doug Langdale, and Candie Kelty Langdale, with music by Gustavo Santaolalla and Tim Davies, and animation done by Tangent Animation. The film follows a warrior princess who embarks on a journey to fulfill an ancient prophecy, gather three great warriors, and defeat the gods threatening to obliterate humankind.

When I first saw the trailer for Netflix's Maya and the Three, it looked like the most generic modern princess show I'd ever seen. Now that I've actually watched it... I feel pretty much the same. Though not produced by Disney, this show takes all the modern-age princess tropes that Disney developed over the past decade leading up to Raya and the Last Dragon and drags them out over the course of ten episodes. If you want to see what the media is currently pandering to the next generation, you need look no further than Netflix, the wokest streaming network around. Maya and the Three is produced by the same people who worked on the 2014 animated film The Book of Life and shares many of the aspects that made it both memorable and not so memorable. Like The Book of Life, Maya has a unique and creative art style inspired by Aztec, Mayan, Caribbean, and Incan influences, making it a visual feast for the eyes. Yet, its story leaves much to be desired, and its modern influences act as a hindrance to its otherwise unique form of storytelling.

I can't blame Maya and the Three for ruining princess culture. That has been a slow and ongoing process for at least a decade. I can, however, blame it for pandering to it and exacerbating the process. I did not find this show as problematic as the live-action Mulan remake since Maya is willing to ask for help from the "three" warriors referenced in the title. Still, it is difficult to take her seriously when she appears to be a small child leading a group of gargantuan fully-grown warriors. Some of this could be explained by the truth behind Maya's origins, which is revealed early in the show, but it never establishes whether or not that is actually the reason that her physical ability is not reflected in her appearance. Still, the series proves that not all hope is lost for modern princess culture. It demonstrates the benefits of modern princess stories just as much as the faults. Maya shares more in common with Elena of Avalor than just her Mesoamerican heritage. Both are strong leaders who understand the importance of teamwork and must occasionally make amends for their own shortcomings, which are all positive lessons for children. However, Maya is less feminine than Elena overall, which furthers the more problematic aspects of modern-day princess culture, even after studies have proven that feminine heroines actually have a positive impact on the development of young girls.

Michelle and her three (oh, you see what I did there?) sat down to write this Maya and the Three review for Drugstore Divas after watching the first two episodes to help you decide if you want to stream the show with your family.

The Three Point Lighting Technique is a standard method used in visual media such as video, film, & photography. The technique uses three lights called the key light, fill light and back light.

In film, computer animation, and other visual media, 3-point lighting is the standard method of setting up lighting. It consists of three lights from three points: key light, fill light, and rim light. Each light serves to separate the subject from the background, add dimension, and can be arranged depending on the desired mood the artist is trying to achieve. Lighting also helps to make a scene and its action more dynamic, as well as cast emphasis on character expressions, dramatic moments, or changes the direction of the narrative.

It's all about a warrior princess in Mesoamerica, what is now Central America, who embarks on a quest to recruit three legendary fighters to help save the world of gods and humankind. One of 'The Three' companions is a character called Rico, who has a stammer.

U.S. speech & language therapist and filmmaker John Gomez, who was approached by Netflix to consult on the show, has written a great article for our Your Voice section, all about his involvement in the show. In it, he says, "The production team was looking to hire a consultant to ensure that Rico was portrayed with sensitivity. They asked if I was interested in the job, and of course I was all in.

'The first meeting with the 'Maya' team was an unforgettable experience. I had reviewed the script in advance to make suggestions on the character's storyline, dialogue, and stuttering behaviours. The team's openness to my suggestions was as impressive as it was endearing."

Now, Gutirrez is teaming up again with "Maya and the Three" star Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias for a new animated film titled "I, Chihuahua," which just released its first piece of concept art. If we knew absolutely nothing else about the film except its title, I would already be very intrigued. But then there's Netflix's caption for the film, which reads: "The upcoming Netflix animated feature 'I, Chihuahua' follows Chacho, a scrappy masked luchador chihuahua."

"I, Chihuahua" will be written by Gutirrez, Doug Langdale, Candie Kelty Langdale and produced by Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias and Tim Yoon. Netflix describes the film as an underdog tale of a Luchador Chihuahua who travels around the world to fight for his family, so we can expect dazzling action on the ring. In a statement, Gutirrez called the film "a hilarious love letter to Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling) movies, fighting video games and underdog sports films," as well as "the greatest masked chihuahua film ever made."

The mention of fighting video games is very intriguing. "Maya and the Three" was very much influenced by "Lord of the Rings," but it also featured a lot of video game and anime references, which made the film a melting pot of cool scenes and easter eggs. A story about a chihuahua who is also a wrestler may easily lend itself to a "Tekken" or "Street Fighter" homage, which would absolutely rule. Now, the only thing left to do is to start speculating on names for the chihuahua's finishing move.

Maya and the Three has a very colorful, distinctive art style. How did you develop the sound design to match?

The director of the show is Jorge Gutirrez [El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera], who I had worked with on The Book of Life, so we had a certain working relationship already established. We have similar tastes in filmmaking styles and how sound can be used to enhance a story. It was a natural fit. Before COVID hit, I read the script, and he showed me concept drawings. This allowed me to understand the characters and start formulating ideas of what things could sound like. Then, little by little, we started looking at different parts of each of the chapters. ff782bc1db
