In addition to serving a practical function, the Rose Well House came to be known as a place for romance. It was a popular spot for marriage proposals, and eventually it became a campus tradition for couples to kiss in the Rose Well House at the stroke of midnight. According to campus lore, a woman was not considered a true coed until she had undergone this rite of passage.

Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally's (Meg Ryan) unconventional friendship spans more than a decade, with plenty of ups and downs. It isn't until the stroke of midnight at a New Year's Eve party that Harry finally confesses his feelings to Sally in one of the most iconic speeches in rom-com history.

Baby, it's cold outside, and clearly the only way to get warm is to make out with someone on New Year's Eve. Nothing beats the age-old tradition of kissing your crush at the stroke of midnight (except staying home and eating pizza because you're too lazy to go out), so get inspired with our favorite NYE lip-locks from movies and TV. (Also, if there are no available humans around to kiss, your poster of One Direction definitely counts.)

Remember when Chandler and Monica were secretly dating, and desperately wanted to get their kiss on at the stroke of midnight? And then Joey helped them lock lips by organizing kisses between all the friends? And then you died a little inside because you were so happy. Yeah, that. Just all of that.

Sometimes film kisses have made history, challenging conventionality. Sometimes they have been so memorable the image has become an indelible part of our pop culture history. And there are even times they are the only memorable part of the film.

" Kiss me at the stroke of midnight " was an okay rom com.

The movie deals with a typical high school romance that turns everyone's fantasy of a girl next door meeting her celebrity crush, into reality. And, of course, he will like her as well. There were some cute moments, as the couple had chemistry and looked good together. There was some drama too.

But the overall story is predictable and cliche. The characters felt one dimensional, especially the leading lady, with no background, no plans for the future, or actual personality other than the basic cookie-cut one they were introduced with. That is not to say that the actors were bad; they were actually really good and their performances were enjoyable. However, the script didn't allow them to really shine.

So, overall, five out of ten.

Other stories address what Shippers view as the deliberatesabotage of the MSR during season six after the Summer, 1998 release of thefeature film-X-Files: Fight the Future. The film, based in the mytharc, brokenew ground, incorporating a near kiss halted only by Scully's paralysisafter being stung by a virus-carrying bee. Indeed, most who were introducedto the series by the film had no doubt of the couple's romanticfeelings, including X-Files neophytes and critics Roger Ebert (1998), whoobserved that "Mulder and Scully are in love with each other, butsublimate all their feelings into their work," and the late Gene Siskel(Cleland, 1998), who likened the duo to Tracy and Hepburn. The aborted kissclearly indicated the couple's desire, but was not to be referred toagain, and the mytharc continued to feature Agent Diana Fowley, a woman fromMulder's past who entered late in the fifth season in anticipation ofthe film's romantic tilt. Fowley was portrayed as duplicitous, butMulder's trust of her and his refusal to clarify his relationship withher to a melancholy Scully caused what Shippers view as a breach in thepartnership and developing romance. They note the hypocrisy of the move:"Chris [Carter] has droned on and on about his objections to`soapy' plot devices yet he goes right ahead and uses the soapiest ideaof all: the meddling ex-girlfriend that returns from abroad" (AOL). Fanswho began watching the show after being enthralled by the movie's MSRslipped away due to a sense that they were victims of a "bait andswitch," as one ATXF discussant put it.(5) Although a few of the lighterstand-alones alluded to Mulder and Scully's ongoing attraction, Shipperssee this as a cop-out, believing that the MSR is inseparable from themytharc. As one remarks: "MSR in the mytharc or dark episodes always hasmore weight in my eyes" (AOL). Fanfic answers sixth season chagrin bystating in headers that the objectionable events are going to be ignored, orby reconciling the agents and eliminating "The Fowl One," oftenmortally and at Mulder or Scully's hand (Arthur, 1999; Caldwell, 1999a).Fanfic also compensates for Scully's tendency to be incapacitated orleft behind in the mytharc. Especially in "post-colonization"stories (Blueswirl, 1998; DashaK, 1999; MD1016, 1999b), Scully matches Mulderas they elude their enemies in a post-apocalyptic future.

Meta-text, including statements of actors and creators, filtersfan negotiation of "the ship," especially in light of revealingtext. Carter's early and rigid stance against a romance put NoRomos in afavored interpretive position which he continued to nourish, alleging, as ifhe does not oversee content, that if the duo focused on each other the alienswould "run amuck" (Wild, 1996, p. 42). After the film signaledimpending romance, Carter backpedaled by asserting that the agents "havea romance without it being romantic and sexual," and that "if youtake off on those ... tangents, it takes away from what makes the show sogood, which is the stories" (Perenson, 1998, p. 46). Despite his mixingof serial and episodic formats, he sanctions expectations created by theformer while dismissing those engendered by the latter. No UST argument ismade to endorse Shippers' reading of sexual attraction. However, the"platonic romance" oxymoron nullifies an empowering message gleanedfrom the romance--that women should gain sexual desirability as a result oftheir intellect and public role as much as men. Carter sharpens his quest torescind the film's near kiss in narration accompanying its DVD version,in which he insists that the agents were about to lock lips as a gesture of"respect."

As season seven loomed, many Shippers grew optimistic when Carterrevealed that the agents would share a New Year's kiss, although hequickly added that sex was not forthcoming (Creator hopes, 1999, p. D1).Aggravation resumed when he exerted his authorial control in a newspaperpiece (Johnson, 1999), the title of which pegged the kiss as a"tease," and again denied the duo's romantic affinity. Theeight second, closed-mouth, stroke-of-midnight smooch occurred in a hospitallobby after the agents averted a millennial apocalypse, and was punctuated byMulder's polysemic comment, "the world didn't end," andScully's unsettled reaction to it. Some Shippers were pleased, whileothers saw it as anti-climactic. And, as cynical fans predicted, there was nofollow-up.
