The Dark Knight Returns is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential Batman stories ever made, as well as one of the greatest works of comic art in general, and has been noted for helping reintroduce a darker and more mature-oriented version of the character (and superheroes in general) to pop culture during the 1980s. Various elements of the series have since been incorporated into depictions of Batman in other media, while a direct animated adaptation of the story, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, was released as a two-part film across 2012 and 2013.

During the creation of the series, fellow comics writer/artist John Byrne told Miller, "Robin must be a girl", and Miller agreed.[7] Miller said that the comic series' plot was inspired by Dirty Harry, specifically the 1983 film Sudden Impact, in which Dirty Harry returns to crime-fighting after a lengthy convalescence.[citation needed] The series employed a 16-panel grid for its pages. Each page was composed of either a combination of 16 panels, or anywhere between sixteen and one panel per page.[8] Giordano left the project halfway through because of disagreements over production deadlines. Comics historian Les Daniels wrote that Miller's idea of ignoring deadlines was "the culmination of the quest towards artistic independence".[9]

On February 9, 2010, it was announced that Nolan had "cracked" the story and was committed to returning to the project.[70] Shortly afterward, it was announced David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan were working on a screenplay.[71] Goyer would leave the project during pre-production to begin work on Man of Steel; Jonathan continued writing the script based on the story by his brother Chris and Goyer.[13] Nolan said that his brother's original draft was about 400 pages.[72] The film's storyline has been compared with the Batman comic book series' story arc "Knightfall" (1993), which showcases Bane; the miniseries The Dark Knight Returns (1986), in which Batman returns to Gotham City after a ten-year absence; and the story arc "No Man's Land" (1999), which depicts a Gotham cut off from the rest of the world and overrun by gangs.[73][74] The nickname "the Dark Knight" was first applied to Batman in Batman #1 (1940), in a story written by Bill Finger.[75][76]

The Guardian scored the film four out of five stars, calling it a film of "granite, monolithic intensity", yet also calling it a "hammy, portentous affair".[247] Andrew O'Hehir of Salon writes "if The Dark Knight Rises is a fascist film, it's a great fascist film, and arguably the biggest, darkest, most thrilling and disturbing and utterly balls-out spectacle ever created for the screen".[248] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three out of four stars, stating "the film begins slowly with a murky plot and too many new characters, but builds to a sensational climax."[249]

The Dark Knight Returns reinvigorated Batman as a much darker hero than before. It also inspired decades of comics that came after it, as well as an animated film adaptation. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also seized upon the confrontation between DC's top superheroes. But according to Miller, the Man of Steel wasn't in the original outline for the story!

If The Dark Knight Returns is ever made into a feature film it should be treated as a standalone Elseworld story, like Joker or The Batman. The film should focus on the dystopia elements and the social and moral complexity. It could and should be as dark and violent with an R-rating. Directors like Duncan Jones or Neill Blomkamp could do a terrific job with the material. A Dark Knight Returns could be a great mix of the superhero genre, dystopian sci-fi, and action and a filmmaker could use films like A Clockwork Orange, The Warriors, Akira, and Dredd as influences.

Better late than never. Just watched the best Batman animated film. A dark edge of the seat thriller with some great action sequences. BGM was so haunting. I'm wondering this movie came six years ago.

Peter Weller's Batman voice was great.

After seven weeks of lengthy writing, which Vanderbilt described as "7 weeks in hell", Sebastian then pitched the script to Jonathan Nolan, who claims to have added more philosophy to the screenplay. When approached to the rumors, Jonathan officially confirmed the production of a Batman film but dismissed any questions on it being a sequel or reboot. At Comic Con 2013, Sebastian hosted a panel initially named "Sebastian Holloway's soon-to-be-disclosed film" where he announced the production of The Dark Knight Returns. The panel name immediately followed suite after the announcement. During the panel, Sebastian stated that the film has very reminiscent scenes from the comic line but is otherwise unrelated. At the end of the panel, a trailer was screened which was said to have been a mix of the themes of the last two films in the Christopher Nolan series. At the end of the trailer featured a dark scene where The Joker says maliciously "It's all about that sense of unpredictability...". After the trailer finished, the audience cheered intensely which resulted in complaints from the other panel. The same issue was raised when Sebastian Holloway confirmed himself as the Joker. Later, Holloway stated that the footage seen is a collection of moments from the one fifth of filming done.

Roethlisberger is friends with Thomas Tull, the film's executive producer who joined the Steelers' ownership in 2009. Tull advocated Pittsburgh as a location and the Steelers' involvement in the third installment of the "Batman" trilogy, which is being directed by Christopher Nolan. Christian Bale returns as Batman and Anne Hathaway plays Catwoman. 17dc91bb1f
