Music festivals have had a reputation over the years of long queues whether it's at the entrance gates, for food or to use the toilets. There has been a significant improvement over time as organisers get better at planning but problematic queues are still being experienced at some events creating unsafe conditions and attracting plenty of adverse coverage in the media. There are some simple steps that organisers can take to minimise queuing at entrance gates.

Planning.

A full understanding of the likely numbers of festival-goers that will attend is essential and organisers should utilise data form ticket sales along with historical data from previous events. Further analysis of CCTV footage from previous events can also help to highlight any areas that need particular attention. The planning process should cover improvements to site layout and staggering visitor arrivals combined with excellent staff training.

Site Layout.

Previous experience can help to highlight particular hotspots for excessive queuing to gain entry to the festival site so creating a good site plan with sufficient entrance and exist gates will help. Consulting with experts who understand crowd movements and human behaviour can ensure that a sufficient number of gates exist to spread out festival-goers across multiple entry points. Technology may be able to assist and using self-service unmanned ticket scanning terminals can speed up entry. Organisers should employ a dynamic approach to crowd control and congestion at entrance gates by monitoring entry flow data in real time so that remedial action can be taken quickly.

Staffing.

Many music festival entrance procedures are impacted by the need to search festival-goers after successful scanning. Using well trained security staff with support from volunteers the searching process should be as fast and efficient as possible. If thorough searches are required it is likely to be a choke point at entrances. If there are safety concerns about the build-up of people outside the gates staff should know when to alleviate pressure by allowing visitors in without being searched or scanned.

Timed Ticket Entry and Allocated Gates.

For a large music festival site with a good layout with numerous entrance gates organisers should consider allocating specific gates and entrance times to visitors. This can be specified on their electronic ticket along with associated parking facilities. Warning festival-goers that their entry may be refused if they attempt to use the wrong gate or arrive at the wrong time should help to reinforce this message.

For festival organisers planning their events using a software management platform like Festival Pro gives them all the functionality they need manage every aspect of their event logistics. The guys who are responsible for this software have been in the front line of event management for many years and the features are built from that experience and are performance artists themselves. The Festival Pro platform is easy to use and has comprehensive features with specific modules for managing artists, contractors, venues/stages, vendors, volunteers, sponsors, guestlists, ticketing, cashless payments and contactless ordering.

With almost all festival-goers bringing a smartphone and 4G WiFi gradually becoming a growing reality, mobile transactions in pre-ordering food and drink have become the natural progression for a much improved and positive consumer experience. Pre-ordering only requires signposted collection points, meaning no long queues and no cash. We would argue that enabling customers to pre-order food and drink ahead of attending a festival, or at the festival would be a logical step, but we are aware of the unique challenges that festivals face. Despite progress, a stable internet connection for the vendors and customers can be a problem, particularly for rural festivals.

According to research conducted by the Association of Independent Festivals, the average festival goer spends a whopping 88 per day on food and beverages. That is a significant amount of money that will help you to generate greater revenue so you can expand and grow your festival in years to come.

Revellers who attended the nine-day-long music and culture festival in Nevada began leaving the venue on Monday, leading to a huge traffic jam. A drone footage of long queues of vehicles heading away from the Burning Man festival has gone viral on social media. The attendees were asked to wait due to continuous rainfall, thought to have been the heaviest since the festival began more than 30 years ago. The final go-ahead was given on Monday and tens and thousands of people queued in the desert to leave.

Hey everybody, this forum is doing a great job of ramping up my excitement levels even more! I haven't been to Glastonbury since 2009 so I was overwhelmed by how much brilliant after hours electronic music there was. Which areas tend to have queues to get into, and which would you advise going to before the headliners finish on the main 5 stages, just NYC Downlow or Shangri La, or are there others?

It is important that you approach the site on the side that you want to park. Using local roads to get to the opposite side of the site causes delays so use main roads that are well away from the site. A few extra miles travelled further away can save hours in queues near to the site. Always follow the directional signs, variable message signs and park where directed by staff.

When leaving the festival please be aware that journey times on the A39 back to the M5 can be a couple of hours and on the A37 to Bristol can be up to 4 hours. Over the past few years the best route for exit has been south on the A37 to the A303 and then east to the A34 for the Midlands and North or onto the M3 for London. Also consider using the A361 towards Frome and then the A350 towards Swindon to get to the M4 from there pick up routes to the Midlands North and East.

Unless you are pre-registered for the accessible car park, people with a Blue Badge should display the badge clearly next to their official festival parking ticket when entering the public car parks and Stewards will direct you to the forward parking (this may still be some distance from the gates). All festival goers needing parking will need an official parking ticket.

We would like to assure all customers that neither event was oversold, and customer safety is, and always will be, paramount to the festival. Like all other major events, all our event plans were reviewed by local authorities and are in line with industry standards.

In a statement from organisers and West Yorkshire Police, a spokesperson said: "While some reports of anti-social behaviour were received, no reports were made to West Yorkshire Police regarding any serious disorder at the festival during the final night.

Not only did the solution smooth out the high-volume online ticket sale peaks, but the real-time communication features were appreciated by both film festival organizers and fans in the waiting room. The use of the waiting room for the New York Film Festival was an effective website overload management tool that allowed them to communicate clearly and efficiently, keep their website up and running, and provide customers with a smooth and undisrupted experience.

The Phoenix Festival was set up by John Vincent Power[1] of the Mean Fiddler Music Group in 1993 as an alternative to the established Glastonbury and Reading Festivals. It was held at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon and was one of the first four-day festivals in Britain.

The first year of the festival (1993) featured headline performances by Sonic Youth, Hole, Faith No More and The Black Crowes, and included other notable acts such as Manic Street Preachers, Julian Cope, The Young Gods and House of Pain. However, the event was marred by controversy. Travelers refused free entry, blocked the entrance meaning many spent their Friday night in their vehicles in long queues. Festival goers were made to put out camp fires and turn off sound systems at midnight. These rules were in contrast to the 24-hour culture of the Glastonbury Festival, with which many of those present at Phoenix were familiar. There were even demands for refunds, and the festival's reputation was marred from the outset. The enforcement of these rules by security staff led to many of the festival goers showing their displeasure in no uncertain terms.Fencing and light rigs were toppled, fires set and physical clashes between festival goers and security staff also occurred.

The festival never really recovered from its poor reception, and although it attracted consistently popular acts, festival goers were less than happy with the site (an old airstrip) and there were also complaints about the prices on site. Such were the problems with security that when the Big Top managed by experimental theatre company 'Dancin Dog' was three times over capacity no staff were available to remedy the situation leading to fights between performers and audience and artists unable to leave the stage resulting in crowds demanding more for several hours and performers continuing until they collapsed from exhaustion and in fear for their lives.

Problems with the event reached a climax in 1996 when many festival goers missed David Bowie on the Thursday night due to problems letting people on site. Having sold out that year for the first time, due to the Glastonbury Festival taking its usual year off (once in every five years in a cycle), the organisers struggled to cope with the crowds and extreme heat. Temperatures on site exceeded thirty degrees Celsius on all days. The weekend was further marred with problems with water being unavailable in parts of the site. The event was notable for the fact that the Sex Pistols headlined their first major UK festival that weekend. e24fc04721
