How Does The Game Work?: The game comes in a set of 63 mooncakes of varying sizes, from bite-sized ones to the largest one that measures up to 16cm in diameter. It also involves six dice and a bowl for the players to toss them in. The results are invalid if any of the dice falls outside the bowl. Depending on the combination of numbers displayed in the six dice, the player will be awarded a mooncake.

The size of the mooncake depends on the numbers shown on the dice. The mooncakes are named after the six ranks in the imperial exam.

For example, if one of the six dice shows a four pips, one is bestowed a \u201cxiu cai\u201d title, which means the level of the person who passed the exam at country level and is given the smallest mooncake. On the other end, you are declared the \u201czhuang yuan\u201d or scholar if four of your six dice show four pips. Another winning scenario is that five of the dice show the same number. The winner of the game is bestowed with the largest mooncake in the set of 63.

In contrast, 32 mooncakes are reserved for the lowest \u201cxiu cai\u201d rank, while 16 are made for the next ascending rank, \u201cju ren\u201d (a successful candidate at the provincial level). Now, the first prize is where everybody gets competitive. Unlike prizes 2 to 6, people can steal the first prize from you should they roll a higher combination. For example, four 4s are lower than five of a kind. What they do is they get the last number to see who rolled higher. Two people can get five of a kind but if one gets a 2 and the other gets a 6, the first prize goes to the one whose last dice is a higher number. So in this case 6 > 2 therefore, the first prize goes to the one who rolled five of a kind + a dice with 6 dots.

Essentially a game of luck, the Mooncake Dice Game requires at least three players and may have as many as 10 per table. To play the game, a table has to have six dice. A player rolls the dice in a bowl. Rolling five dice with the same number except four, or four dice of four wins the first prize.
