Operating system and device: All keyboards work with both Windows and Mac computers, but not all of them come with specific layouts for both. Consult the Mac section below for our picks with Mac-specific layouts that omit the Windows key and include an Option key. For any of our picks that lack a Mac layout, you can always swap the key functions in macOS.

The Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard and the Logitech MX Keys S are our favorite Bluetooth keyboards with Windows layouts. If you prefer a mechanical keyboard, we recommend the wireless Epomaker TH80 Pro as well as the wired Keychron V3, Keychron V5, and Keychron V6.

The Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard (and its Mac sibling) are our favorite Bluetooth keyboards; you can regularly find one for $30 or even less on sale. The Keychron C3 Pro is the best entry-level mechanical keyboard.

Full-size keyboards include all of the letters and numbers, function keys, media keys, and navigation keys, as well as a number pad and arrows. They take up the most space on a desk and can force your mouse into a less-ideal ergonomic position than smaller keyboards do. But if you use a number pad frequently or simply enjoy having a full-size layout, the Logitech MX Keys is the best Bluetooth option, and the Keychron V6 is the best full-size mechanical keyboard.

If you want a wireless keyboard with a built-in number pad, we recommend the Logitech K585 Slim Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard, which is more compact than many other models with number pads. Like our top pick, the K585 is inexpensive, offers a comfortable typing experience, and has a battery that will last for years. The K585 also provides a convenient stand for a phone or tablet, a feature that none of our other picks have. But this keyboard lacks a backlight, and it can connect to and swap between only two devices.

Wireless keyboards can help you declutter your desk, allow you to type more comfortably on your phone or tablet, or let you use a computer or a TV streaming device from your couch. Desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, smart TVs, and streaming devices all use Bluetooth, and the best Bluetooth keyboards can switch easily between multiple devices.

You can choose how your keyboard feels. NuPhy offers several switch options: tactile Brown switches with a satisfying bump, clicky Blue switches that issue a crisp clicking sound, and linear Red switches that offer less feedback but feel smoother. The Air75 V2 supports hot-swap, which means that you can remove the included switches and put in any other low-profile switch without having to replace the whole keyboard. (You can read more about switches in our introductory guide to mechanical keyboards.)

Recently I installed iPadOS public beta and bought an external third party keyboard. The spacebar of the keyboard does not work properly on some applications including the native email app. When I clicked on the spacebar, it inputs newline instead of space. Also, I noticed I can input space by clicking on shift+spacebar or alt+spacebar.

Same issue here. I'm wondering if it's specific to 3rd party keyboards (vs Apple's Smart Keyboard Folio)? I've also tried with multiple (non-Apple) bluetooth keyboards.

Hope this will be resolved in the final release.

And a bit more, you can just clear the shortcut for Spacebar under the "full keyboard access>>Commands" (it was set as act of Activate by default), don't need to disable the full function in case you need other shortcut to control the ipad.

I'm using the laptop with external screen, keyboard and mouse.Yesterday after a dist-upgrade and after I unplugged the external keyboard I noticed that the Lapotop's keyboard was mapped to whatever (J = 1 , L = 3 , M = 0 e.t.c.) however I can login and type perfectly in the login screen and as a guest.

This looks like your Laptop keyboard has an integrated Numpad. It is active when enabling NumLock.

Your Laptop Numpad might have small drawings of numbers on right part of your keyboard with the following mapping:

jkl -> 123

uio -> 789

m -> 0

I'm using a Chromebook Pixelbook attached to a standard external keyboard. The top-row keys on the Pixelbook keyboard have special functions, eg. change volume or brightness etc. This is great on the internal keyboard, but I'd like the function keys on the external keyboard to work as labelled, ie. F1 to F12. How can I achieve this?

There is a setting under Device > Keyboard "Treat top-row keys as function keys" which can be toggled on or off. Unfortunately it applies to both internal and external keyboard. See feature request "Treat top-row keys as function keys for external keyboard only"

The first issue is that when I go to double tap space on either device, which with my keyboard settings replaces the first space with a period, the editor freezes for a split second, jumps the view slightly and deletes both spaces.

I have experienced the same problem when using external keyboard (Logitech K380). It happens to show up in some lines and then it is sticky for that line. If I move to next line space bar continues to work as spaces. If I go to another program or browser the same is not observed. And as the original poster mentioned I have not observed this with onscreen keyboard only the external one which is a new purchase for me.

Yes, you are right. And no, with Gboard it just works fine as far as I can oversee now. I test more in future. Seems that there is incompatibility between editor and Samsung keyboard or something like this. Now is already late, tell you later about more detailed testing results.

Spacebar becomes delete key when an external keyboard (Logitech K380) is paired with my Android tablet ( Samsung S6 Lite). This happens anytime a word that is not recognized by the dictionary is typed. My current workaround is instead of using space I put in a comma or - and then continue typing.

Are you perhaps redirecting the external keyboard devices with USB redirection ? There policies to force redirect USB devices. Are any of those enabled for users ?

Keyboards should not be redirected in this way so I would recommend disabling as a test.

Perhaps the touch keyboard is interfering with the external one. Would try toggling this policy to see does it make a difference. -mobile-device-onscreen-keyboard-does-not-appear-in-icahdx-session-automatically

Thank you for your response.

I have a new understanding of what is happening.

1. with the DISPLAY closed on the Surfacelaptop, connect an external keyboard and use the extended DISPLAY

2. when the tablet and keyboad are disconnected on the Surface pro and an external keyboad is connected, or when an extended DISPLAY is connected

In the above cases, keyboad does not work on citrix virtual desktop.

However, most external keyboads can be used by pressing the keyboad symbol at the top of the virtual desktop as shown in the attachment.

Keyboard is not usable in the following situations.

Cannot be used for operations within the Citrix virtual desktop (Edge URL input is possible).

It is not usable when both the PC and the extended display are being used.

It cannot be used when the PC is closed (it can be used when the PC is open).

It is not usable when the keyboard is removed from the main unit of PC (e.g. Surface Pro) and only an external keyboard is used.

The keyboard cannot be used regardless of whether it is a USB keyboard, a wireless keyboard, or a Bluetooth keyboard.

Keyboard can be used in the following situations.

When the main unit of the PC + extended display is open and the main unit keyboard becomes usable, the keyboard can be used.

When the expansion display is removed, both the PC keyboard and the external keyboard can be used.

When the keyboard is not usable, the external keyboard can be used by pressing the software keyboard button displayed at the top of the screen (however, it may not be usable in some cases and is never stable).

Subject says it all for the most part. I have an external USB hub connected to one on my Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports on my MacBook Air early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4. At random times during the day (2-3 times a day) my Logitech G602 mouse and external Apple Keyboard will stop responding completely and only a reboot will restore functionality. The USB 2.0 HUB under System Information->Hardware->USB completely disappears until the MacBook is reported. Disconnecting/reconnecting the USB Hub does not resolve the issue. I have attached a screen capture of what the USB device looks like normally when things are working correctly. This MacBook Air has replaced a late 2019 MacBook Pro that was running Mojave and then Catalina 10.15.4 for the last 2 days of use. Using the same USB hub and external devices I did not experience this issue with that configuration. Granted I only was running Catalina for 2 days with the MacBook Pro 2019.

I understand that you are having issues with your Logitech G602 mouse and external Apple Keyboard intermittently disconnecting during normal use. I am more than happy to guide you in the right direction.

If you continue to experience issues, you may need to look into reinstalling your macOS. It is recommended you backup the device to an external hard drive before attempting a reinstall. Here are some resources that will walk you through backing up your device with Time Machine and reinstalling your macOS:

Hi Becky, thanks for the reply and the suggestions. I did review If your Apple wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad isn't working with your Mac as expected but nothing suggested in the article seemed to help.

I have the same problem. Also with a Macbook Pro from 2020. I use an external monitor (Dell u2720q) with internal USB hub. This internal hub freezes USB 2.0 devices, even if they are directly connected to the Macbook itself. It happens very sporadically, depending on usage 2 to 4 times a day.

Might have a new interesting finding here. I have had similar problems with wireless keyboard and mouse loosing connection through my USB-hub connected to my MacBook Pro 13 2015 model running Catalina 10.15.5. 17dc91bb1f
