The Senior Secondary Australian Curriculum: Mathematics consists of four subjects in mathematics, with each subject organised into four units. The subjects are differentiated, each focusing on a pathway that will meet the learning needs of a particular group of senior secondary students.

Essential Mathematics focuses on using mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions. It provides students with the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems in real contexts for a range of workplace, personal, further learning and community settings. This subject provides the opportunity for students to prepare for post-school options of employment and further training.

Cassie McKenzie has taught mathematics for 12 years in South Australia and Queensland. Cassie initially struggled with maths in high school before the combination of a brilliant teacher and excellent resources meant that she went on to excel in the subject during senior school and university. Cassie is passionate about instilling a love for mathematics by assisting students to gain confidence and find enjoyment through the challenge of mathematics.

In 2015, New York State (NYS) began a process of review and revision of its current mathematics standards adopted in January of 2011. Through numerous phases of public comment, virtual and face-to-face meetings with committees consisting of NYS educators (Special Education, Bilingual Education and English as a New Language teachers), parents, curriculum specialists, school administrators, college professors, and experts in cognitive research, the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (2017) were developed. These revised standards reflect the collaborative efforts and expertise of all constituents involved.

However, enrolments are on the decline. For instance, between 2001 and 2013 the proportion of students studying the high school certificate in New South Wales, who did not take a maths subject, tripled from 3.2% to almost 10%. NSW has announced it intends to make maths mandatory in years 11 and 12 to arrest the decline in enrolments, but there has not yet been a timeline set for this move. Victoria is also widening its maths offering to senior secondary students.

They are essential mathematics, general mathematics, mathematical methods and specialist mathematics. In Queensland, these are the subject names used. However, there are different names for different types of maths in each state and territory with some being more closely aligned with the Australian Curriculum than others. For example, in NSW the equivalent subjects have completely different names and also arrange content and concepts differently.

Essential mathematics (most closely aligned with foundation mathematics in year 11 in Victoria) focuses on students developing and using maths knowledge and skills to investigate realistic problems. The subject or subjects include the study of data and statistics and financial modelling. Students selecting these courses typically have work or a vocational education and training course in mind once they leave school.

When we were teaching in school, many students studied two maths subjects in year 12 (mathematical methods and specialist mathematics, or mathematical methods and general mathematics). Everyone had different ideas on which maths they found the hardest.

Unsurprisingly, studying senior maths at school increases your success when studying university maths units and courses. Some universities have pages where you can easily search by maths subjects rather than course.

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe ways in which developing student practitioners of the discipline of mathematics increasingly ought to engage with the subject matter as they grow in mathematical maturity and expertise throughout the elementary, middle and high school years. Designers of curricula, assessments, and professional development should all attend to the need to connect the mathematical practices to mathematical content in mathematics instruction.

In this respect, those content standards which set an expectation of understanding are potential "points of intersection" between the Standards for Mathematical Content and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. These points of intersection are intended to be weighted toward central and generative concepts in the school mathematics curriculum that most merit the time, resources, innovative energies, and focus necessary to qualitatively improve the curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development, and student achievement in mathematics.

This document was developed by the seven ministries of education in collaboration with teachers, administrators, parents, business representatives, post-secondary educators, and others and was first published in 2009. Minor revisions were made in 2014 to clarify the scope of some of the outcomes and to reflect the revisions previously made to the front matter of the Kindergarten to Grade 8 Mathematics: Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes 2013. Finally, references to Accounting courses were deleted since they are no longer accepted as alternatives for meeting mathematics graduation requirements. ff782bc1db
