MAME, the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, is a multi-purpose emulation framework which facilitates the emulation of vintage hardware and software. Originally targeting vintage arcade machines, MAME has since absorbed the sister-project MESS (Multi Emulator Super System) to support a wide variety of vintage computers, video game consoles and calculators as well.

Place your MAME ROMs in /userdata/roms/mame. If you'd like to, you could put ROMs intended for different versions of MAME into subfolders in this folder. For instance, you could put MAME2003-plus ROMs into the /userdata/roms/mame/mame2003plus. The latest versions of which ROMset to use can be found on the arcade guide.

iMame4All is an old version of MAME that's fairly easy to run, even on hardware as weak as the RPi Zero. Many games, especially newer ones, have known issues with this version. Supports the least number of games.

Additional options can be accessed via RetroArch's Quick Menu ([HOTKEY] + while in-game). Its dip switch settings can be accessed by pushing in [L3] in-game, navigate with the D-pad and accept with the button. Push in [L3] again to exit the menu.

There is no configuration for this core under ES. All of its options can be altered via RetroArch's Quick Menu ([HOTKEY] + while in-game). Its dip switch settings can be accessed by pushing in [R3] in-game, navigate with the D-pad and accept with the button. Push in [R3] again to exit the menu.

MAME offers a Menu in-game (push in [L3] + [R3] or press [HOTKEY] + ). This can be used to manually adjust inputs or game settings. Alternatively, all of MAME's options can be edited by opening the /userdata/system/configs/mame/mame.ini file (you may need to create this file if it's not already present).

This infamous Model 1 arcade board was a dramatic step-up above the competition in regards to 3D polygonal graphics. Thousands of vector-shaded polygons being drawn on-screen at once, with extremely responsive 60 FPS arcade feel (for some games).

Emulation for the Model 1 is sadly not that mature yet (such as slowdown, graphical inaccuracies and random crashes), however if you have a powerful enough machine you should be able to power through it. Model 1's ROMs are best played on MAME 2010 or newer.

First check that the version of MAME you're attempting to run it with is the same as the ROMset you got it from. Mismatched versions aren't guaranteed to run, though sometimes if there were no differences made between MAME versions the game can run in both versions (though that's generally an exception, not the rule).

With that said, newer versions of MAME emulate these arcade games more accurately than older versions. This generally means that real-world performance takes a dip as more accuracy to the emulation is added (although in some cases, it can dramatically improve performance, really it's on a game-by-game basis).

If your machine is struggling with running a particular game, try using an older set with its respective version of MAME, it may perform better. Just remember to make that special per-game setting to actually utilize the correct MAME version if deciding to go down this route!

Thankfully, r0ni works really hard at maintaining a version of MAME that runs natively on OS X (via Command Line, it has no windowed GUI). You can download the latest version here.

You can use your mouse or cursor keys to navigate the menus once launched, and press TAB in-game to bring up the options screen. Remember to setup Input Options (General) or per game, to make sure you can use your chosen controller.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. On version 0222 the createconfig command puts the files in your home folder. After editing OSD video to opengl (line 251 in mame.ini), all working fine for me now.

I was trying to install it into the Frameworks folder in the system library. I have tried using my user folder library, and although I can see SDL in there, I cannot run Mame when I follow the steps in terminal, so I am completely stuck.

There are two main routes to get up and running with MAME under macOS, OpenEMU, and SDLMame. OpenEMU is the vector most users will want to use, but it isn't Apple Silicon native (but will still run fine in Rosetta). I've made a video, but if you're like me, you probably prefer the written version.

OpenEMU is a beautiful core-based emulator (akin to RetroArch) that supports many game consoles. It's designed to be the one-stop-shop for Mac emulation, and it does a fantastic job. It's gorgeous and easy to use..

Regular OpenEMU does not support the MAME core, so you need to get the experimental version fromopenemu.org. I'm unclear as to why after years, the MAME version is still experimental. If I had to guess, it's likely because there are a few missing assets (the control menu for MAME doesn't have a skeuomorphic graphic, for instance), and it doesn't filter out BIOS files.

Installing games is pretty straightforward. Drag the .zip files into OpenEMU under the Arcade tab. MAME games are file name specific, unlike most other emulators, so do not change the name. Also some games have dependencies.

If the game you are trying to play has a dependency, it'll display an error when you try and launch the game, with the name of the missing file. You'll need to install that file by dragging it onto the window. Do not decompress MAME game .zip files.

Emulating NeoGeo games requires one extra step, you'll need to get the NeoGeo BIOS Rom. Drag the Neo Geo zip into OpenEmu. You'll see the NeoGeo ROM in your game list, but ignore it and double-click the games as you normally would. I had some difficulty finding one that worked in more modern distributions of MAME.

SDLMAME is a macOS port of MAME and MESS that features both native Intel and Apple Silicon support and (previously) has been updated much more frequently than OpenEMU's MAME core. For years, OpenEMU was stuck at MAME version .149.1, from 2013. As of writing this, OpenEMU is currently in lock-step with SDLMAME as both feature version 0.235, but OpenEMU is not Apple Silicon native. SDLMame is a port of MAME by @sdlmame_osx. It also features MESS which emulates many retro consoles as well.

Go to libsld.org, and download SLD2 for macOS and decompress it. Next, install the SDL2.framework into (in your root) Library/Frameworks. SLDL2 is a library for cross-platform development designed to provide low-level access to hardware such as I/O and graphics cards. Many Steam ports for macOS are based on this library.

This is where things get a little strange, as if you try and execute SDLMame, it'll give you the same warning as OpenEMU. Right like the mame unix executable and click open. It'll open the terminal and crash. This is fine. Close this terminal. The application has now been safelisted.

YYou'll need to navigate to the directory that SDLMame is in (or locate it). The easiest way is to use the change directory command then drag the folder onto the terminal. It should look something like:

The reason NeoGeo gets no love is because people just use MAME. MAME handles a wide spectrum of consoles and arcade machines. And people tend to favour the original arcade ROMs that NeoGeo games are ports of. UpUbuntu.com has a fairly good tutorial on getting it all set up that I can't beat... But the basics revolve around the mame package.

So I recently upgraded my computer to an Intel i7-4790K with integrated 4600 graphics. I did get a GTX 970 but returned it (Fan problem) and decided to wait until prices come down and stick with onboard graphics for the moment.

So here's the rub. I just got around to setting up MAME again and basically copied my exact settings from my previous "working" setup (complete with HDD paths and names). Everything is exactly the same as far as GameEx knows. That worked well for mostly everything, except the emus that required toe be installed on the OS drive (Project 64, Dolphin, and etc.) However, when I try to launch MAME the screen just goes black and MAME throws the "Can't Create Direct3D device" error. I can hover over the open window in the taskbar and it previews what's on the screen in MAME (the only way I can see the error message).

Have any Ideas? I can Guarantee it's not an issue with my GameEx setup. It must be related to DirectX or video driver dependencies. I know that MAME added OpenGL support (yay) but I don't want to have to go through all the hassle of updating and compiling another version of MAME (I still can't figure out how to do it without screwing everything up, even after multiple reads through the tutorials for CLRmamepro). You all seem to do it so effortlessly, it makes me jealous. I know that a GPU would solve this, but I'm still waiting for prices to come down for the GTX 970.

I just tried Upfdating the video graphics driver in device manager as well, then restarted and it still throws the error. I also tried re-running intel's driver updater tool and it still won't install the driver they list. Not that it should matter, the device manager's updater and windows automatic updater should have that covered. 152ee80cbc
