About ten years ago I was working in a medium sized office with corrupt-as-can-be management and severely incestuous hiring practices. My abusive supervisor was a director's cousin, and the receptionist was a crass, ditzy woman without a clue, in her 40s.

One day the ditzy receptionist complains she can't open a document I sent her, so I came over looked at her screen and I see she isn't running Microsoft Office. It's something called "EasyOffice". EasyOffice was replaced with another suite, also now defunct, simply called ONE[1] (also released in a scaled down form as ONE SE[2]). The company's former website (www.e-press.com) is now a parked domain.

Go back one millennium, and the term office suite meant a bunch of rooms in a brick-and-mortar building where people gathered on weekdays to type letters, hold meetings, calculate earnings, and waste time at the water cooler. Google Workspace has plenty to offer any organization that needs a collaboration-ready office suite, a website, shared calendars, and mail services. Google Workspace is cloud-only, unlike Microsoft's apps. Whether this is an advantage or disadvantage depends on your needs. Cloud-only apps are better if you want to assure that everything produced by your organization is always available in the cloud. For its ease, elegance, speed, and depth, Google Workspace is a powerful choice.

What sets apart the WordPerfect Office suite from others is the fact that its namesake word processor, WordPerfect, is the only office app that gives you total control over every detail of the documents you produce. The suite comprises two more apps, Quattro Pro (a spreadsheet app) and Presentations.

LibreOffice is an impressive achievement that keeps improving with each incremental release. It still suffers from a clunky interface, despite some recent improvements, and it crashes more than it should. But it's your best choice for free, open-source office apps.

LibreOffice is for people who want open-source software. In particular, open-source software tends to be appealing to government offices, financial firms, and other privacy-conscious users, because they can examine the source code for vulnerabilities. It's also an excellent choice for anyone with older documents in outdated formats, as LibreOffice can usually open them.

With any subscription-based office suite, your apps automatically stay up to date with all the latest features and security updates. That's an important benefit, but if you don't really care about getting the absolute newest updates, you might prefer to purchase a static standalone version. Many office suites offer the latest version to existing users at a discount, so you might not need to pay full price when you decide it's time for an upgrade.

When deciding which free office software to download and use, first consider what your actual needs are, as sometimes free platforms will only give you access to a basic set of tools, so you may find a paid subscription is much more worthwhile. Additionally, budget software options can sometimes prove limited when it comes to the variety of tools available, while higher-end software can really cater for every need, so do ensure you have a good idea of which features you think you may need.

Google Workspace : Collaboration + productivity apps

There are many different office software suites but Google Workspace formerly known as G Suite remains the original cloud one and one of the best business office suites, offering a huge range of features and functionality that rivals can't match.

If you generally use Microsoft document formats, Office Online is a brilliant choice. Unlike Google's free office suite, it doesn't need to convert your files before you can work on them, and you can share them easily through your Microsoft OneDrive account. Just log in using your Microsoft account (the same one you use to log into Windows 10) and you're ready to go.

The suite contains six programs to cover every common office task: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base. The last three are tools you won't find in many other free office suites, and are designed for vector diagrams, mathematical functions and databases, respectively. The latter is particularly useful; free alternatives to Microsoft Access are hard to find.

WPS Office Free is a slimmed down version of a premium office suite, but you'd hardly know it. Each of its three programs looks just as slick as the latest versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and is packed with just as many features.

File format support is excellent, and you can save your work in native Microsoft formats for easy sharing with Office users. There's no database software, but WPS Office comes with an excellent free PDF reader that's a great replacement for Windows' built-in app.
