A mysterious rumble that rattled patio doors and shook houses across the Space Coast Friday evening was not an earthquake, said the U.S. Geological Survey. But a seismologist with the agency is hard-pressed to say exactly what it was that shook homes from Cocoa to Merritt Island.

If the strange rumblings had been detected, it would have been the first of its kind, seismic activity for the area since 2006. It was then that more than 3,000 residents from across the state, including Rockledge to Melbourne, felt tremors stemming from a 6.0 magnitude earthquake centered several hundred miles away in the Gulf of Mexico.

Earthquakes, however, are a rare occurrence in the Sunshine State, which sits on a cushion of porous limestone and bedrock. That said, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake was reported 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in Century, a Santa Rosa County town along the western stretch of the Florida Panhandle.

In 2016, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was reported just off the coast of Daytona Beach, just to the north of Brevard County. Authorities in that case later determined that it was man-made, triggered by U.S. Navy testing.

An earthquake registering 6.9 on the Richter scale hit 16 miles south of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico, and was felt locally at approximately 3:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The official time of the earthquake was Sunday, April 4, 2010, at 3:40:39pm

The NOAA/ NWS/ West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has issued a statement regarding potential tsunamis: A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch, or advisory is in effect for these areas.

Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. Some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

In the vicinity of the 4 April 2010 earthquake, there are several active faults and it has not yet been determined specifically which fault the earthquake occurred on. Within the transition from the ridge-transform boundary in the Gulf of California to the continental transform boundary in the Salton Trough, faulting is complex. Most of the major active faults are northwest-southeast oriented right-lateral strike-slip faults that are common in mechanism to the San Andreas fault and parallel Elsinore and San Jacinto faults, that run north of the Mexico-USA border.

Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey, said an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 and a depth of focus of 5.9 km was measured around 12:23 p.m. about nine miles southeast of Kalamazoo, near Galesburg.

Dozens of residents in several different regions beyond Kalamazoo -- from Mount Pleasant and Sterling Heights to Lansing and even as far as Cleveland, Ohio -- called the WWJ Newsroom and reported feeling a rumble and the ground shake for between five and 10 seconds.

So, what exactly happened? "All earthquakes occur on faults, and we do have some faults in southern Michigan," said Caruso. When the underground breaks along a fault, a sudden release of energy causes a seismic wave, which makes the ground shake.

"It's rare for Michigan to experience earthquakes, but as we were reminded today, it does happen," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement. "There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage because of today's earthquake, and that's fortunate because we are acutely aware of the challenges posed by such natural disasters in other parts of the world recently. The Michigan State Police is ready to assist in any emergency that strikes our state."

Earthquakes are big and intimidating forces of nature, but creating earthquake sound effects is easy! Today I am going to show you how to create your own earthquake or earth rumble sound effect using a granular synthesizer and some plug-ins.

Next, I put the speed up to 200 (2x speed), which is the maximum speed. You can make the speed higher or lower than this, depending on how fast you want the crackling of your rumble sound to be.

Next, I used bx_subsynth by Brainworx to add to the sub-bass rumble. I cranked it up a lot to make the effect really noticeable and then brought down the mix until I felt it sounded good.

The supervolcano of California, which carries the power of burying Los Angeles underneath more than 3,000 feet of ash, has been showing signs of activity.

More than 2,000 earthquakes were identified rumbling across the Long Valley Caldera in the last few years by scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

A new investigation was conducted by the team to observe if the seismic activity was hinting at the volcano's massive eruption. Detailed underground images of the caldera of Caltech researchers were created to find how the recent seismic activity resulted from the gases and fluids released after the temperature of the area decreased.

Off the coast of the Pacific Northwest sits the intersection of the North American and Juan de Fuca tectonic plates. The subduction zone separating the plates dives deep below the U.S. and Canadian coasts, and earthquakes are an erratic visitor to the region. In 2001, this area experienced the magnitude-6.8 Nisqually earthquake, which was felt along the coast.

Regular earthquakes are like munching on a handful of peanuts. Pieces crack as your teeth bite down. Conversely, smooth peanut butter paste would be equivalent to the smooth motion of tectonic plates that glide past one another. Slow earthquakes are an in-between. Peanut chunks float in the smooth peanut butter paste that glides around in your mouth. The quiet movement of your teeth as you nosh on the paste is like the slip signal. When your teeth bite into to a peanut chunk, that crack you feel is equivalent to a tremor signal. Together the contrasting smooth and brittle textures create a signal that is like episodic tremor and slip.

Both the causes and repercussions of a slow slip event, such as whether it can trigger or dissipate a larger, abrupt earthquake, remain enigmatic. Within subduction zones, stress builds along the plate boundary as one plate is shoved below another. During a regular earthquake, such as the magnitude-9.1 Tohoku earthquake, that stress is released as slip occurs on that boundary, or on a nearby fault.

Dr. Jackie Langille, a geologist and Associate Professor at UNC Asheville, says, "large earthquakes in this area are very rare. We rarely have earthquakes greater than a magnitude 3.5 to 4 and those are the ones that start to cause damage."

The U.S. Geological Society reports that six earthquakes at magnitude 2.5 or higher have occurred within 20 miles of this center since 1981. There have been 32 earthquakes magnitude 1 or higher within 20 miles of this spot since 1983.

The rumble glyph states that "your earthquakes deal [X] increased damage." - is this referring to the earthquake aspect? Or some other skill? I have earthquake for my ground stomp ... will that work?

The cities of Dallas and Irving took a first step toward an earthquake task force Monday with an afternoon conference call that included experts from the US Geological Survey. Seventeen small quakes have hit the Irving area around state highways 114 and 183 in the past week. Several of them were big enough to startle neighbors in Dallas and elsewhere.

Rocky Vaz, director of the Dallas Office of Emergency Management told council members a primary goal of the task force would be getting the latest, accurate information on the earthquakes to the public, and educate them what to do when the ground starts shaking.

After an earthquake, no matter how small, first assess any human injuries. Light earthquakes can still topple tall, top-heavy furniture pieces. Make sure everyone is safe before looking for damage inside or outside your home after a minor or light earthquake.

After the kitchen area, check the pool deck and pool. Pool decking, tile, heaters, supply lines and filter systems all need to be assessed for damages after an earthquake. Observe water levels and pool chemistry over the next several days and weeks. Any major changes may indicate a structural problem and will need to be inspected by a professional.

The main point is to stay safe. A small earthquake is a good reminder to inspect for safety during those times when all is quiet, and the only rumblings you feel is the stampede of familiar, fun-loving feet on the patio.

A small, 2.2 magnitude earthquake rattled the lower Hudson Valley and parts of northeast New Jersey early Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake hit about a mile south of Hastings-on-Hudson in Westchester County (about three miles north of Yonkers) at 1:53 a.m., at a depth of 9.8 kilometers, the USGS said.

The USGS went on to say that over the past three weeks activity in this area has been increasing even though they are mild quakes. Thursday a 2.1 earthquake with an epicenter around Athens occurred and a week ago a 2.2 magnitude quake was recorded near the Dunlap area. Four months ago, a 2.0 magnitude quake with an epicenter just north of Dayton happened along with a 1.8 magnitude quake in the Sweetwater area.

Even though quakes have been occurring in the East Tennessee area, the USGS said that most quakes in Tennessee are happening more in the West Tennessee area. Western Tennessee is located within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, an area famous for a catastrophic series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 that were centered near New Madrid County, Missouri. This quake created the Reelfoot Lake area. The force of the land upheaval drowned the inhabitants of an Indian Village and turned the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a short period of time creating the lake as water overflowed its banks. It also created two temporary waterfalls in the Mississippi River ff782bc1db
