Suddenly the other day her boss rang her and said that he meant to get her a housewarming present but forgot when she was moving in so he has just sent a gift card by email to make up for the lack of a 'real present'. We thought that was nice of him and expected a 20 or even 50 voucher for somewhere like Dunelm Mill or Homebase or whatever. To her/our surprise her boss had sent her/us a 500 voucher for John Lewis, which was extremely kind.

Is there anyway to get the 'cash value' out of these gift cards? Could we perhaps find someone to sell it to for a discount, maybe 450? Or can you buy something and then return it for cash? I imagine they don't let you get the refund back in cash if you purchased with a gift card. Anyone have any bright ideas about how to get this money into our account somehow?
