Apple's latest operating systems, Catalina on the Mac and iPadOS on the tablet, now offer built-in secondary display functionality with Sidecar, but that only works with very recent hardware models. In fact, Sidecar won't work with any iPad released before 2019. Duet Display can work with iPads dating from as far back as 2012. This makes a good case for using Duet Display in a reclamation project for an old tablet you no longer use regularly. It also works cross-platform, so you can use a Windows PC or a Mac as the host and Apple or Android mobile devices as the secondary display. And you can even turn a Chromebook into a secondary display, since Chrome OS can run Android apps.

Once you connect it via the USB cable, the mobile continues to behave normally, with all sync and recharging functions active. You even see mobile notifications while using the app. When you open the Duet Display app, the computer takes control. It briefly says "Adjusting Resolution" and then you see an extended desktop on the mobile display. You can use Windows' Settings to choose whether you want the Taskbar on the second display, which isn't useful for small displays like those on smartphones. The mobile's screen can do all the typical multi-monitor functions, including extending or mirroring the desktop.

We used a Surface Book and several Apple and Android mobile devices to extend the desktop's interface (not at the same time: Duet only supports adding one mobile screen). Dragging a window from the computer's display to the iPad's screen works just as it would with any external monitor. That said, if you have eagle eyes, you may notice a slight lag when dragging windows around on the mobile's screen. You can minimize this delay by fiddling with the Duet Display's settings on the desktop. Setting the app's screen refresh rate from 30 frames per second (fps) to 60fps smooths out the animation and sharpens details, but it causes your laptop to work harder to maintain the higher resolution and drawing rates.

Using the iPad Air screen for social media and messaging functions is a snap. Playing 1080p HD videos using Duet Display was a smooth and stutter-free experience in our tests. Tweetdeck displayed multiple columns without a hitch, and Slack and WhatsApp windows looked fine. Using Duet for email, messaging, and social feeds while you do your main work on your main monitor makes a lot of sense.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem or it might be just me. i use my ipad air 3rd gen as a second monitor on my windows 10 laptop. all versions are up to date (both software and hardware) and it was working just fine until today when the screen on the second monitor looked smaller (borders at the top and bottom of the screen). I check the app on the desktop, it only shows two options "Regular resolution" and "High Resolution" instead of the usual resolutions recommended on the app which doesn't change the resolution on the second display at all. What's odd that it's on this iPad only that shows this because I checked with my phone it seems fine. I already contacted tech support from duet but it might take a while to get a response. Hope someone has a fix for this!

I use duet display current from windows to ipad and use Wacom as drawing tablet. the duet display is good but it lags only feeding 60fps anything faster and better? I tried spacedesk and xdisplay already

I got an app called duet display and I've been using Photoshop with my Ipad Pro and my Apple pencil, however this morning as I'm trying to draw in a new document it's not showing. The pencil is paired, by using the pencil I can select and deselect everything, but it just won't draw. I have been looking for a solution for this issue and haven't been successful. Please help, it's for an assignment for school. TIA

Edit: Duet display is what I have been looking for. This program is incredible. Zero lag, pixel, resolution, retina, mirroring options, extend options. Any parameter you'd use with an external monitor you can do except it's touch screen. It allows multitasking in iOS 9. This is worth the 15 bux.

I have just discovered Duet display. This is incredible. If you haven't heard of it look it up. You plug any iPad or iPhone in like you usually would. Launch the duet app on the Mac and iOS device. Choose how you want to extend your macs display. You can use touch screen and everything. No internet connection required. I'm running my faders on the iPad and my plugins on my primary display. Who needs a control surface when you have a program like this?!

2) Plugins you move onto the Duet screen stay there just like if you were using a normal 2nd monitor: if you have multiple things from multiple programs positioned on the duet screen, the active program's pallets will move to the top, if you minimize and app, the pallets will vanish, etc.

3) I'm guessing the app isn't particularly lightweight: while playing an AUM tune, when switching back and forth with the duet app, I had occasional instances where duet (quickly) relaunched itself. But AUM kept playing fine in the background, and in most cases I was able to move bring up Duet between desktop apps without any problems. (This is on an Air 1: on your iPad Pro with it's much larger memory and greater processing power, there should be even fewer problems).

I can't remember if I've recommended Duet Display here before or not, but it's a great app to turn an iOS device into a second screen--extended or mirrored. As you can see in the attached photo, I've got Accordance 12/Mac in the extended display on my iPad Pro. I'm used to using a dual-screen setup at my desk, but this works quite nicely when I'm at a Starbucks where I am right now, working on a Bible study for church.

Duet Display actually works with Windows or Mac computers. In addition to the iOS app (linked above), you also download a program to your computer that needs to be running at the same time that the Duet Display app is running on your iOS device. When using an extended display like I am in the photo below, I can drag windows or other objects between the two screens. The trackpad (or a mouse) works on the extended display just as if it were simply a monitor that the Mac was plugged into. In fact, that's what this app does--it makes an iPad into a second monitor. Of course, any iOS notification will still display on top of the Duet screen, but it doesn't affect anything I'm doing unless I forget and touch the notification. If I do that, the iPad will switch to whatever app sent the notification.

The screen clarity is quite good, too. It's not exactly as sharp as my MBP screen, but it's better than the screen of a MacBook Air. There are multiple resolutions and framerates that can experimented with, and Duet Display will even use the discrete graphics chip in my MacBook Pro to power the display on the iPad Pro.

When I uninstalled the app, it then started saying that there was no app available to use this accessory whenever i plugged it in. In the message it says something about duet display. I went to advanced settings and did not see any Bixby Routines menu in that section. However after rebooting the tablet and the computer now it gives a pop up every time I plug in the device to the computer to open duet display instead of auto opening it. I am new to android so am unsure if I am just missing something.

My screen gave up more than a year ago and I gave up trying to find a fix, until now, thanks for sharing an amazing document on how to repair, I have ordered my screen from Aliexpress and I am looking forward to once again having a working display,(if all goes well), thanks for your great effort in helping many frustrated Duet owners fix their screens.

I have an Apogee duet 2 audio interface which is sucks now because I have used a wrong power adaptor with it. Now it is contacting to computer and display is working properly but not giving any output and not taking any input can you repair this I will send this to you via courier.

Hi there. hopefully someone has the answer. I have set up my iPad as a second windows monitor using duet display, installed the desktop version of air manager and am using the G1000 overlay for the PFD which I have popped out of MSFS 2020. However only the mouse currently works despite the input being set to touch and mouse on air manager software. Have I missed something?

I have experimented with VNC in the past, to create a virtual second screen to my Linux Notebook, then connect to it with a VNC client. It worked, but was complete trash to use, as there was a significant latency on the tablet-display which really made it hard to mark and edit Text for example.

So I was using duet display with windows 8.1, and everything was perfectly fine. However, after I installed windows 10, everytime I install it, for some odd reason it sort of disables my Nvidia drivers. If I uninstall it, then they come right back on. I thought that that means it's not compatible with windows 10, but this article says it is.

Hey, same here. Windows 10 & Nvidia display driver. The condition is once installed Duet Display the Nvidia is not working anymore even though I uninstall the Duet Display and do a clean install for Nvidia. It just messed up and I have to reset the windows in order to Nvidia function properly again. I do emailed to Duet 3 days ago and I'm still waiting their respond. ff782bc1db
