I am having the same issue. It is too late when I know that Brother DCP-T420W does not support AirPrint and Brother (based on their website) might not provide macOS drivers. This is silly as this printer is only released this year.
Just as a comparison, a DCP-T510W is mentioned in the About AirPrint - Apple Support as a model supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. For macOS Big Sur, the printer manufacturer recommends using AirPrint. However, for macOS 10.15, 10.14, 10.13, 10.12, and 10.11, CUPS drivers (different versions) can be found under Downloads.

An interesting thought is whether the above drivers would work with a DCP-T420W. It may not work at all. Generally speaking, anyone carrying out experiments with drivers must know exactly what to do and what to expect. There can be software conflicts. It may become necessary to erase and reinstall everything on the computer. The wrong printer driver could possibly even cause a hardware problem. Data may be lost. Multiple backup copies of important files should always be available.
Brother probably has yet to do their part in Big Sur capabilities. Apple and Brother are two separate companies. So, let Apple know about this incompatibility issue. Apple won't get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what to include in updates to come.
I use a "Raspberry Pi" computer to install the printer DCP-T420W then share it on the network. I connect my MacBook to the printer through the raspberry pi to print directly from any application. It works fine on my iPhone and iPad, too. I can also control color or mono print options, paper quality, etc.
I tried that and the application said that i should download "Brother iPrint&Scan utility app" from appstore and it can only print pictures and PDF. Excel, Word and other third party apps can't directly print from their apps beside from Brother iPrint&Scan utility app. I don't have time for converting word to PDF I'm working at office.

As you have found out, the DCP-T420W is not an AirPrint model, and the Brother download site seems to suggest iPrint&Scan. CUPS drivers on the other hand are offered for the DCP-T510W model (see my previous reply above). Unfortunately, I do not have access to these printers, but dooooooom appears to have tested it (I can only assume, with a DCP-T420W). A CUPS driver should allow you to print directly from other applications.
on my DCP-T220 (without wifi) then i can install directly from Preferences. What you need to do is to find software on that page rather than to let macbook to find it automatically. Find brother software with "CUPS" at the end of the sentence.
I wonder if anyone can help me solve this problem. I have a printer Brother DCP-T420W. I tested in two other systems from friends, Ubuntu Mate, works without any configuration and Linux Mint, had to install drivers downloaded from Brother's website.
Here at Arch Linux, i use the aur driver "brother-dcpt420w 3.5.0-1".
I bought this printer some months ago, because of Linux support. This ins't the first time and installation that i tried to make it work. You're right, very strange the way i did to configure, but installing only with the provided AUR package never worked and there several reports like mine across the Internet with similar issue. But, for me, matters that it is functional and i can return to use Arch Linux. Thanks for your support and shared knowledge Seth. Have a nice day!
I understand that, but poking around until it works without understanding why bears the risk that you'll end up in that situation again.
