As well as downloading Brother drivers, you can also access specific XML Paper Specification printer drivers, driver language switching tools, network connection repair tools, wireless setup helpers and a range of BRAdmin downloads.

7. Run the tool from within the terminal using the following command. You must change the red section of the command to match your installer tool version and Brother machine model:

 Ex: bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1 MFC-J880DW

The DeviceURI number is the machine's IP Address, which can typically be found on the machine's Network Configuration report. Your machine must already be connected to your network before installing the drivers.

I saw similar posts in the community but was not able to solve the issue even after contacting Adobe support + Brother Support + Apple Support (all of them referred me to each other at the end and no one seems to know the issue). I guess posting here is my last resort before I decide to change this printer.

I'm running InDesign 2023 on MacOS 14 Sonoma / Apple M1 machine. I recently purchased a B&W high DPI Brother printer MFCL2710DW. I installed the printer as required using "printers & scanners" and let Apple download the correct driver for the device, which it did. The printer functions well. Brother website and Apple does not offer an alternative driver for this particular machine.

While using the printer to print from applications such as Notepad or Drawbot, the prints come out pretty sharp and satisfactory. Even when I create a PDF from these sources, the print quality is superb.

However when I work in any Adobe applications (illustrator/indesign/acrobat), the printing quality drops terribly. Everything comes out pixilated and bitmapped. Even the PDFs I exported from InDesign do not print well.

My initial instinct was to play around with color profiles and printing options to solve the issue. I thought that the printer must be expecting RGB and I'm working in CMYK. I think I played with every setting available to me (color management settings, printer settings, output, graphics etc.) I had no luck. There is a "print as bitmap" option which when I uncheck, it automatically checks itself back again when you click anywhere else (I saw this as a bug reported in another post).

My second instinct was to investigate the differences between a PDF that was generated from Drawbot (which prints good) and InDesign (which prints poorly). I wanted to locate the differences and see if I can convert the InDesign generated PDF to the properties of the Drawbot generated ones. I wasn't able to achieve this as well. I'm happy to upload both tests here if anyone wants to give it a try, just for kicks. Although it is not a sustainable solution for the long term.

Talking to Apple/Brother/Adobe support, they have identified the issue as a Postscript driver missing for my printer model for Sonoma. No one had a solution other than blaming the other party. I was wondering if anyone has a solution for this. Maybe I'm missing something. Is there any way I can get crisp prints from this device via Adobe programs?

Update: after speaking with Brother and Adobe, it's been determined that Adobe apps in Sonoma require a Generic Postscript Driver for printers to function correctly. This is not supported in my Brother printer, and they have no plans to add support. So, I will be choosing my next printer after carefully confirming that it supports a Generic Postscript Driver.

Hello, of course. Printing from Acrobat still preserves the bitmap quality. As I stated above, there is a bit of an improvement but it looks like a text rendering to image conversion thing. The notepad print is far superior quality.

I'm having the exact same issue. I've reached out to Adobe, Brother, and Apple. Apple researched the issue and discovered that Adobe has its own rendering engine for sending postscript to printers, and there are some known issues about that being supported in Sonoma. This seems to be related -- hopefully Adobe can update Creative Cloud and provide full support for printers in Sonoma.

The irony is that when I first setup this printer I was on a much earlier OS. And I still had these same issues. In fact, I updated to Sonoma just to see if it would fix these issues. Looking back, maybe not the smartest move on my end.

It sounds to me like the printer may have limited capabilities at printing directly from Adobe applications like Illustrator and InDesign or printing PDF files created by those applications. Brother needs to update their stuff. This seems like a fairly common problem. Not all printers can process the latest visual bells and whistles Illustrator and InDesign can create or store in a PDF. It can require the printer (or RIP application) to have an Adobe-certified PDF engine that is up to date. Our office laser printer stinks at printing artwork with transparency effects or combinations of objects with clipping masks and transparency. Yucky discolored box syndrome can be visible on the printed pages. The same layouts come out of a large format printer looking perfect.

Not trying to do anything fancy -- just printing text. I even went out and bought a brand new printer and had the same issue. Seems to me that it's the Adobe software, since I'm able to print correctly from Apple-based apps.

Any advice on how to check/confirm if a printer supports the Generic Postscript Driver? Officially the Brother Printer is "supported by Mac" and "comes with a Post Script Emulator (BR-driver)". But it took me a long time to discover that the BR driver only works on Windows.

So, I've followed the instructions on Brother's website, I've got the installer and I've tried running it. I've seen this question: Brother MFC-J470DW Printer Driver Installation , and the answer seems to be the exact instructions brother gives me.

This problem is common across linux distros. The driver package is looking for a case-sensitive specific model name for the printer. I have the MFC-j5910DW and needed to type in the printer name exactly like that with the j and DW in this exact case. The printer packaging did display the printer name in that matter.

I have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13-inch, serial # FV***V22. I recently upgraded to Ventura 13.0.1 and now my scanner won't work. Previously I would got to System Settings, click Printers & Scanners, and click the Open Scanner button. Since the software upgrade, when I click the Open Scanner button, a new page opens with the name of my printer at the top (Brother MFC-J870DW) but nothing happens after that. I was able to use the scanner with an app (Brother iPrint&Scan) but regret the loss of innate scanner ability

Apple's Image Capture app worked. I didn't realize that it was the same thing that popped up when I clicked on 'Printers and Scanners' and clicked 'Open Scanner'. Why it no longer works like before doesn't matter now that I've found Image Capture.

If the answer is yes then I recommend that you contactBrother's support site for assistance. As noted above there are alternatives available to make your scanner function. VueScan will work with any fairly recent scanner.

With that said, you may be able to use the Image Capture app instead of the Open Scanner in Settings. That is the first thing I would try. If the standard ICA driver that is provided with the OS is unable to detect your scanner in Image Capture, then you will need an ICA driver from brother. Since they choose not to support Ventura, you may be able to find it in a different model from Brother. They say it is included with the Printer Drivers that you can download, but don't know if they give you the option to just install the ICA driver without the printer drivers.

I am sorry you are having scanner problems. If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider which may be useful. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, printers and scanners will often stop working. Then a new OS compliant software must be installed for the scanner to work. Experience has shown that many printer/scanner manufacturers are very slow to provide updated software. What you can do is to thoroughly check theBrother web site for updated compliant software that works. If none is available, then you should ask when it will be released. If that doesn't work, you can try scanning using Apple's Image Capture app. It will scan, but is not full featured. Another alternative is to download and try the full featured scanner software from VueScan. You can try it for free. It will show a watermark until you purchase it. I bought it and can recommend it. I have no association with VueScan. Good luck.

I see that if I uninstall my Brother l2740dw and reinstall it, the scanner works for a few minutes, then stops and reverts back to a grayed out scanner on the screen. So I have to keep reinstalling the printer every time I want to scan. But not if I only want to print. Any help greatly appreciated.

Aha. Shared devices looks grayed out. But... if you hover over it and click, devices magically appear. I got a scan. I had to discover that you can set dpi if you click "Show Details". It should also say "Set". Thanks. (I did already get the current job done with my HP Printer when I discovered it was a Brother only bug.). Hopefully, Brother comes out with a new driver soon. I can now wait.

The work around I found is to create a new printer, that is "Control panels-> Printers and Scanners-> Add printer, Scanner or Fax". For me (a brother MPC8680DN) it comes up in the list. Select it and give it a new name, perhaps with a number at the end. Like Upstairs Brother 2023-1. It works for 3-7 scans, then you have to create another printer with a new name. Don't worry the control panel will let you delete the old ones. 152ee80cbc
