Superficial bacterial folliculitis is an infection that causes sores, bumps, and scabs on the skin. These skin abnormalities are easier to see in shorthaired dogs. In longhaired dogs, the most obvious symptoms may be a dull coat and shedding with scaly skin underneath. Folliculitis often occurs in conjunction with other skin problems, such as mange, allergies, or injury. Treatment may include oral antibiotics and antibacterial ointments or shampoos.

Seborrhea causes a dog's skin to become greasy and develop scales (dandruff). In some cases, it's a genetic disease that begins when a dog is young and lasts a lifetime. But most dogs with seborrhea develop the scaling as a complication of another medical problem, such as allergies or hormonal abnormalities. In these cases, it is vital to treat the underlying cause so symptoms do not recur. The seborrhea itself typically can be treated with certain medicated shampoos.

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm, but by a fungus. The term "ring" comes from the circular patches that can form anywhere, but are often found on a dog's head, paws, ears, and forelegs. Inflammation, scaly patches, and hair loss often surround the lesions. Puppies less than a year old are the most susceptible, and the infection can spread quickly between dogs in a kennel or to pet owners at home. Various anti-fungal treatments are available.

Anyone who shares their home with dogs knows that they shed. How much shedding is normal depends on breed, time of year, and environment. But sometimes stress, poor nutrition, or illness can cause a dog to lose more hair than usual. If abnormal or excessive shedding persists for more than a week, or you notice patches of missing fur, check with your veterinarian.

Mange is a skin disorder caused by tiny parasites called mites. Sarcoptic mange, also known as canine scabies, spreads easily among dogs and can also be transmitted to people, but the parasites don't survive on humans. The symptoms are intense itching, red skin, sores, and hair loss. A dog's ears, face and legs are most commonly affected. Demodectic mange can cause bald spots, scabbing, and sores, but it is not contagious between animals or people. Treatment depends on the type of mange.

Dry, flaky skin can be a red flag for a number of problems. It's a common symptom of allergies, mange, and other skin diseases. But most often, dry or flaky skin is nothing serious. Make sure you are feeding Fido high quality food. Like people, some dogs simply get dry skin in the winter. If this seems to cause your pet discomfort, consult your veterinarian. Ask whether a fatty acid supplement or a humidifier might help.

As if dog poop weren't smelly enough, dogs release a foul-smelling substance when they do their business. The substance comes from small anal sacs, which can become impacted if they don't empty properly. The hallmark of impacted anal sacs is a dog scooting their bottom along the ground. Other symptoms include biting or licking the anal area. A vet can manually express full anal sacs, but in severe cases, the sacs may be surgically removed.

In writing our book about people's bond with their dogs, The Purest Bond, we reviewed the science of how dogs make our lives better. It's not just physical contact with dogs that gives us a boost; we can get one from virtual interactions as well. Researchers have found that some of the perks of being with a dog carry over to screen time.

I did some of this research myself. In my lab, we conducted a study with 1,880 subjects. They completed a standard survey to measure their sense of well-being, which captures the feeling of being happy, safe, calm, content, in control, and grateful. Then, they spent 5 minutes in one of three conditions: reading popular funny tweets, reading Donald Trump's Twitter feed, or reading tweets with cute pictures of dogs. Then, they took the well-being survey again so we could measure the change. All three conditions saw changes in well-being, but dog pictures delivered the biggest positive difference.

This echoes earlier work from Nittono et al who looked at "Kawaii," the Japanese word for cute. They also had subjects in their study look at different types of images, including cute baby animals with big eyes vs. less -cute adult animal pictures. They then performed tasks to measure attention and focus. Subjects in the "cute" group performed better, indicating that the time spent with cute animal photos could improve their focus and potentially their productivity as well.

In February I went on a journey to Agadir, Morocco, to photograph stray dogs and the work of animal rescue organizations in that area. Here is my travel report and lots of pictures. But be warned: There will be gruesome pictures, too. But also hopeful and beautiful ones, so please stay with me here. Some stories need to be told.

Life as a stray dog can be quite ok, too. In Taghazout we found well-fed and trusting dogs. They are fed by tourists but also tolerated in restaurants. The restaurant we went to even had an area with dry food for the dogs and cats.

Every month authorities in Agadir poison 250 dogs. Michle Augsburger of Association Le Coeur Sur La Patte tries to convince the authorities to spend more money on spaying/neutering and vaccination than on killing the dogs. The poisoning with strychnine is especially cruel. Michle was able to reach an agreement with the authorities that dogs with earmarks should not be poisoned. Here in Taghazout you can already see the results of this initiative. Quite a few of the dogs are already spayed and neutered. They live peacefully here and are mostly tolerated.

This girl was not spayed yet. We collected some money for the spaying and neutering of stray dogs in Agadir. She will probably be one of the candidates for this project. I take my hat off to those people trying to lessen the misery. Michle Augsburger of Association Le Coeur Sur La Patte together with Tierhilfe Marokko and Stiftung Tierbotschafter run a shelter for animals near Agadir. Here dogs and cats are kept safe and taken care of until, hopefully, they find a forever home in Europe. There is no reasonable chance to find homes for former stray dogs in Morocco itself. The couple Augsburger turned their private property into a safe haven for these animals. Despite the enormous numbers of 60 dogs and 100 cats three Moroccan employees work tirelessly to keep the estate clean. I was very impressed by the harmonic atmosphere and the beautiful ambience. Dogs and cats and even a tortoise roam among orange trees and blooming bougainvillea, laze around in the sun or shadow and live peacefully next to each other. It is a paradise for animals, but, of course, this is also an enormous responsibility, struggle and burden (in terms of time, money, physical and mental health) for the human beings trying to keep this all running. Tourists want to do good and take puppies they find on the streets to this shelter. This is well-meant, but the limits are reached.

For the son of Russian migrs, who was born in Paris, raised in Milan, and fled to the US by way of France, Elliott Erwitt has developed a keen sense of observation. Living in New York at the age of 11 and then Los Angeles by the age of 16, this early introduction to a multitude of cultures and, most significantly, of the often-tumultuous changes in life gave Erwitt an exposure to the real conditions of the working class, making him a powerful witness of human nature. For Erwitt, dogs become a universal constant. Observers of our world being observed themselves behind the lens of Erwitt.

But what is it about dogs that we love so much? Is there a hidden science behind our love for dogs? Or is it simply learned behavior affected by society and culture? In 2018, TIME magazine published, Why Dogs and Humans Love Each Other More Than Anyone Else, writing:

Like the people Erwitt captures, dogs are all inherently similar but uniquely different. Wonderfully endearing, his photographs often place dogs as protagonists in their worlds. In one image, Erwitt can capture a moment with a sense of humor and serendipity, ultimately inspiring empathy and tenderness in the viewer. Cute or brutish, small or large, alert or aloof, dogs are essential to our modern culture. From street dweller urban pooch, beachcombing dog, curbside car-sitting pup, to the rodeo companion, dogs are as much a part of the picture as the people themselves.
