This is the most common use of the Dell SupportAssist app. At various points on the Dell Support website, you have the option to have your Dell product detected so that Dell can provide targeted support. When you click Detect This PC, the application runs on your computer and detects the Service Tag of your Dell computer. Dell then uses the Service Tag to look up product information, such as your original system configuration and warranty end date, to provide a product-specific support experience.

Today I was just surfing the web and malwarebytes asked me to delete PUP.Vulnerable.DellSystemDetect as PUP and I know this software is used to install drivers for dell and alienware machines and I used to have it installed. I am guessing this is a false positive? Also even though it probably is a false positive is it ok to delete I no longer have this software?

Hi, thanks for the replies. There may have been a misunderstanding. I had already installed the latest version of Dell System Detect following the MBAM detection of these PUP's listed above. , prior to visiting the forum and reading the relevant posts. I had not at this point and still have not removed the PUPS that had shown up in the initial scan. The listed PUP's above relate to the old version. However I have noticed that I now have two versions of Dell System Detect listed in programmes. Dell System Detect and Dell System Detect - 1 so perhaps the older version was not removed. I will remove the listed PUP's and rescan.

I removed the 3 PUP's to quarantine ( although only two appeared, the 'process' one was missing - because it is a 'process' ?). Nothing was detected when I rescanned so presumably the PUP's had actually been removed when updated. The only problem is, I still have these two Dell System Direct files listed in programmes, Dell System Direct ,older one, and Dell System Detect -1 latest ? I suppose I just uninstall this older file ?

Sean Sullivan, security advisor with F-Secure, one of the firms that initially warned of the Dell vulnerability, told CRN by email that the fix is simple, indeed. However, "the existing problem is this: unlike Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, Java, and Flash -- there is no scheduled auto-update," Sullivan said by email.

"The old software will auto-update only if people manually visit dell.com," Sullivan said. "And based on our numbers -- that happens slowly. And so the old software ends up remaining in the wild. Only new computers (and recent updaters) are protected."

Likewise, Adam Kujawa, head of malware intelligence at Malwarebytes Labs, said, "the big reason why Malwarebytes started detecting the vulnerable versions of this tool as a potentially unwanted tool is to make users aware that there is something easily fixed but seriously vulnerable living on their system."

Still, Kujawa wouldn't completely absolve Dell of responsibility.

"The best thing would be for Dell to somehow reach out to each Dell user and deliver an updated version of the tool to them rather than hoping they visit the Dell update site," Kujawa said.

The problem was originally reported to Dell last November, and the company released a patch in early January. The concern now is that many, in fact most, users have not yet updated their computers using the patch provided by Dell.

The genuine DellSystemDetect.exe file is a software component of Dell System Detect by Dell.

thanks for the reply, I have tried restarting from safe mode but didn't bring any results. I haven't tried using legacy bios yet, I assumed that since the drive isn't detected after restart it wouldn't make a difference but I'll try. There are no USB devices connected. Alasdair you have resolved my problem! Wow, I regularly check for driver updates, I use dell system detect and command update, I assumed that it covers all necessary updates. I've spent a lot of time on this, thank you! I truly appreciate all input and the help in resolving this problem.

Basically when I plug it in I get a nice popup telling me that it couldn't detect that its a Dell power supply so it won't charge the battery and underclocks the system. It still works for other purposes (that is, giving power).
