You can get copies of a court order, decree, judgment, or other records filed in your case from the court where the case was filed. You can ask for a copy in person, by mail, and, in many courts, online. There is generally a fee to get a copy of a record unless you have a fee waiver.

Copies typically cost $0.50 per page (1-side). Certified copies are $40.00 per document. For some types of cases, like a restraining order case, the parties in the case can get a copy of the orders for free. Copies are also free if you have a fee waiver.

If a case or record is confidential, you will need to prove you have a right to access the record or case. For example, cases in juvenile court or adoption cases are confidential. Only one of the parties, their lawyer, or someone else authorized to see the case, can get a copy of the record or information about the case.

The San Diego Superior Court does not send out court files electronically or by fax. In addition, persons are not allowed to use cameras (including phones with cameras) to take pictures of the contents of a file.

Once you have located the case number and court location (refer to the online case search for assistance with case numbers and locations), there are a number of ways to obtain a copy of a court record.

If you currently have a certified copy of a certificate that was issued less than one year ago, send in the certified copy of the certificate with your correction request; we will exchange the certificate at no charge.

Many records from court cases are open and accessible to the public. Some records are not accessible to the public for different reasons. For more information on what it and is not publicly available, review the MN Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch. You may be able to get copies of records from a confidential or sealed case, but more paperwork may be required for you to be allowed access. See the Ways to Get Copies tab for more information.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is now providing access to court records exclusively by online ordering or by mail or fax. NARA will no longer provide on-site court case review services to the public at its Federal Records Centers.

This change applies to all closed bankruptcy, civil, criminal, and court of appeals case files that remain in the legal custody of the courts but are physically stored at NARA's Federal Records Centers.

The National Archives is making this change because records can now easily be ordered electronically. It is no longer cost-effective to operate satellite research rooms to provide access to these records.

To receive a certified copy of your court record, you'll need your docket number. If you have an estate case and you don't know what your docket number is, you can search the court dockets for public case information. Otherwise, please call the Probate & Family Court where your case was heard to get your case docket number.

Contact the state vital records office where the divorce took place to learn if that state issues divorce certificates. They will tell you the cost, what information you need to supply, and how to get a copy online, by mail, or in person.
