Cosmo Bots reinvents the puzzle game tactics of old-school classics Qix and JezzBall, dressed up in a stylish outer space mechanical theme. Turning the mouse cursor into a bilateral shooter that projects extending iron beams, the object of the game is to direct the beams and create divisions in the playing field. A division is created when both opposing beams successfully make contact with a frame in the playing field, resulting in the beams defining a dividing line, while the playing field of the smaller division becomes filled and solidified. The player continues to create these dividing lines and fill in empty spaces, until a certain quota of the playing field has been reached. Upon meeting the specified quota for a level, the player completes the level and advances to the next one. Each level also houses a variety of different enemies, adding the object of defeating them and scoring extra points, which is accomplished by trapping the bugs within a division of the playing field as it fills in. Among the many different types of cosmic bugs that the player will encounter throughout the game's 577 levels, some will float around or bounce between the frames, while others will track the shooter and even attack the beams as they project, attempting to prevent a division from being made. Some of the bugs also crawl along the frames of the playing field, making it trickier to capture them, as they may pass by a division before it has finished filling in. The game also spices up the gameplay with power-ups and power-downs, that will randomly spawn upon defeating enemies, launching off onto the screen for the player to catch, or avoid, by directing the shooter. By catching certain power-ups, the player may be able to blow up tricky bugs with a missile or a timed bomb, or enhance the projection speed of the shooter, while the power-downs will introduce less desired effects, such as slowing down the shooter and speeding up the enemies.
