Copycat Killer () is a Taiwanese crime thriller series that was released on Netflix on March 31, 2023. Set in 1990s Taipei, the series stars Wu Kang-ren as a prosecutor trying to track down a serial killer.[1][2] The series was adapted from the 2001 novel The Copycat by Japanese writer Miyuki Miyabe.[3]

Criminals most likely to copy a crime from the media were those who were already predisposed to use it for those reasons. Approximately 20 percent of the inmates saw the media as a valuable resource for learning how to commit a crime and one out of every six stated they were drawn to crime-related stories; these same inmates were significantly more likely to have committed a previous copycat crime. Thus, at least among repeat offenders, crime-related media is most likely to inspire or instruct someone who is already pre-inclined to break the law and may be looking for a better way to do it.

COPYCAT KILLER is a new Netflix thriller series. As heavily indicated by the title, this is indeed a serial killer story. The production is Taiwanese and the story plays out in Taipei in the 1990s. The series is actually based on a very popular novel by a Japanese author.

In this serial killer story, the main villain takes advantage of the widespread interest from both the press and the public. Our serial killer is very media-savvy and manages to turn the case into quite the spectacle. Everyone is paying attention and the masked serial killer becomes a celebrity in his own right as he taunts the police and prosecutor on the case.

However, the actual lead character in the series is the prosecutor. Episode 1 opens with the serial killer talking directly to the prosecutor via a tape shown on TV. Then we go back eight weeks and move forward to the starting point from there.

It\u2019s the long standing debate about whether we humans are born the way we are or perhaps environmental influences have far more of an impact on the formation of personhood. It\u2019s the old nature vs nurture quandary. How do killers come about? Are they born or are they made? The answer seems obvious but then once in a while someone comes along and challenges all that we know about the human condition. Perhaps there\u2019s real evil that lurks in the human heart regardless of the best of intentions. Parents get a bad rap in crime dramas these days. Bullies too. Even this vague amorphous entity called society. It makes sense of course because these influences come out of the formative years of one\u2019s life. However it fails to explain why most people don\u2019t commit heinous crimes or turn into serial killers even if they suffered parental neglect/abuse, or were bullied as children. Or are burdened with trauma. Indeed there are many factors at work. The world we all live in certainly isn\u2019t perfect. No one in their right mind is deluded enough to think it\u2019s fair for everyone. Injustices are a blight on our history because human beings are fallen creatures. And yet, not everyone crosses that line, goes ballistic and takes it out on their fellow human beings leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

It\u2019s the troubling side about any vaguely watchable show pertaining to serial killers. The temptation is to succumb to neat explanations about how these kinds of individuals emerge with psychological babble. I don\u2019t question the facts that such unique people exist. A person\u2019s environment is undoubtedly instrumental in their formative years. But the troubling question arises: if a criminal\u2019s subsequent actions as an adult are mitigated by those facts, then who\u2019s to blame? In order to elicit some measure of sympathy for the antagonists an over emphasis on their past injuries might end up being a double-edged sword. In order to avoid a simplistic view of criminals, the narrative could end up simplifying criminality.

The thriller, which premiered in March, is adapted from an award-winning novel by Miyuki Miyabe. It is set in the 1990s in Taiwan and follows prosecutor Kuo as he finds himself tangled in a game of cat and mouse with a serial killer called "Noh."

He-Ping is sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, however, it is the serial killer who gets the last laugh. While leaving the courtroom, the courthouse is mobbed by angry protestors where a masked individual approaches him, and stabs He-Ping before he can be taken into custody. He-Ping wanted to go out on his own terms and had set up his own death if he was convicted, once again taking control of the narrative of the story.

My bet is on Renarin. He knows what Adolin did, and tries to pose as a killer by killing more people in order to protect Adolin. Renarin knows that Adolin will snap and reveal what he did, and Renarin cannot allow the Kholin family to lose their heir. Also, according to Renarin, Adolin is the more loved as a son, so if it is a choice between losing one of them, Dalinar would prefer disposing Renarin over Adolin. He is sacrificing himself in order to protect father, brother and basically everyone from their inner circle. Plus, Renarin is not very popular anyway so he does not has much to lose.

Chaos could just as easily work in the Ghostbloods favor. Especially if it means people are too busy searching for a serial killer to pay attention to other things. This seems more personal than that to me, but it could still work to their advantage. Especially since they thrive on information and with people getting murdered the exploration of Urithiru will probably slow down a good bit. There's got to be some important information in that place somewhere after all.

I think it is far-fetched to think it is Renarin... The copycats murders are NOT helping Adolin: they are hindering him. Everyone was ready to forget about Sadeas up until the second murder happened. Now, the focus is on who did it while it previously wasn't. I also seriously doubt Renarin would kill innocent people in a distorted plot to protect Adolin especially since it really isn't doing anything for him.

Fact #2: the precise mimicking of the way Sadeas was killed means the killer either (a) saw, first hand, either Sadeas' murder as it happened, or (b) was not present for the event, but saw the body before it was moved shortly after Dalinar was called to the scene.

It doesn't seem like Bridge Four or a member of Sadeas' guard corps would have a reason to do #2, which is why to my mind, Mraize is the most likely killer, and the motive remains unclear. Since he just discovered Shallan = Veil, and mentioned her debt to the Ghostbloods in the context of her family, this would be another way to tie her to them, with blackmail about her betrothed Adolin. This would also mean Mraize saw the murder happen, to know it was Adolin.

In which case, the killing of Vedekar Perel would represent a reprisal killing ordered by her, to convey the message "we can do the eye-stabby, murder-and-disappear thing, too". In addition, it would help flush out the real killer of Sadeas, exactly because Ialai would know they were not the same killer: look for someone whose behavior reveals that they ALSO know the killer was not the same, and you've found someone who knows who killed Sadeas.

Even once they meet his demands, he only gives some questionable help. His insanity is on full display as he speaks in riddles and religious imagery regarding his "art" and that of the copycat. He eventually turns this game of cat and mouse into a race against the clock when he deduces that Mary is the copycat's next victim. When the detectives find her whole life splayed across the killer's walls, the disturbing reality sets in, and it sets up a tense race to stop the psychopath and save Mary's life.

Hannibal is a psychiatrist who works with Special Agent Will Graham to track down serial killers. Unknown to his colleagues, Hannibal is a cannibalistic serial killer known as the Chesapeake Ripper, who works behind Graham's back to further his own crimes.
