The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. It is the inaugural film in The Conjuring Universe franchise.[4] Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star as Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent cases of haunting. Their purportedly real-life reports inspired The Amityville Horror story and film franchise.[5] The Warrens come to the assistance of the Perron family, who experienced increasingly disturbing events in their newly occupied farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema initially intended to release The Conjuring in early 2013 but decided on a summer release date after gaining a positive reception from test audiences.[40] The film was ultimately released on July 19 in North America, and in the United Kingdom and in India on August 2.[41][42] Because of this, it is one of the first horror films to receive a wide release in the United States during the months of June or July since 2006's The Omen.[43] A trailer and a clip from the film were shown at the 2012 New York Comic Con.[44][45] In March 2013, the film was given an R-rating by the MPAA for being what Wan described as "too adult."[18] "When we sent it [to the MPAA], they gave us the R-rating," said executive producer Walter Hamada. "When we asked them why, they basically said, 'It's just so scary. [There are] no specific scenes or tone you could take out to get it PG-13.'"[46] The film is rated 15 by the BBFC.[47]

I've wanted to see it, but not sure if I will regret it or not. I am a novice when it comes to the horror genre, the scariest movie I've probably seen was ghost encounters 2. And I'm sure many of you probably didn't find that scary at all. My main problem is when little kids are victims in a horror movie. It just hits me too hard, probably cause I have a little sister. I started watching it a couple of months ago and got too freaked out that something would happen to the little kids. Am I just overreacting? Is it not as scary as I am making it out to be?

I know I don't share the same enjoyment for horror as many of you. There has been a lot of fondness expressed on this sub surrounding some of the more arthouse-styled movies whose plots might--to me anyway--not get as much emphasis or thought put into them as some of the more commercially geared efforts out there. I'd list The Conjuring among those less artsy films, definitely.

To be fair, I don't think anyone will change my mind about this one. It's just my kind of horror movie. It's scary, it's well paced, some of the turns were clever, and I really enjoyed the "real-life demonologists" played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. The supporting cast was okay, too. This was, in my opinion, a well thought out story with almost seamless direction, and it's head and shoulders above a lot of the horror schlock Hollywood spews in the form of cheap remakes or senseless sequels. I think you'd probably at least agree with that much.

With the third entry, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It being released to mostly positive reviews, many fans have begun questioning whether or not this is the scariest franchise in horror. If there is one thing the horror genre has no shortage of, it is sequels. There are plenty of franchises to pick from, so fans are always debating whether or not The Conjuring deserves the crown as the scariest franchise.

This implies that viewers may not be safe from the evils of the world, as something as simple as moving to a new house or buying a doll could mark them for some sinister events. Films have touched on this before, but few have surpassed the horrors held within The Conjuring universe, making these films that much scarier to fans.

It is one thing to see these horrors intentionally, but it is another thing entirely to be haunted by these visions at random, which happens in film and supposedly to the real Lorraine Warren.

If there is one name synonymous with horror, it is Jason Voorhees. The Friday The 13th series started out as a Halloween rip-off but exploded into horror legend over the course of 12 films and over 40 years. Jason remains one of the scariest and well-known horror icons of all time.

Originally being created for a motive and a cheap jump scare, Jason slashed his way to being a fan favorite baddie, being stopped only by a lawsuit currently holding the franchise in limbo. Whether a drowned young boy or an undead menace, every horror fan knows the iconic hockey-masked legend.

Ask any horror hound, and they will probably tell you that one of the most important elements in a successful horror movie is the atmosphere. Each film in The Conjuring universe is oozing with creepy and gothic atmosphere from the opening logos to the end credits. The films latch on to viewers by giving off a mysterious feeling of dread, and they don't let go until they are scared out of their wits.

Lin Shaye appears in each film and is almost always the highlight. Like The Conjuring, the atmosphere is among the greatest in the horror genre, and the eerie world holding the spirits is one of the most terrifying places put on film. Audiences continue to be frightened by the ongoing series.

Donnie has been writing for as long as he could hold a pencil and has studied film for even longer. He loves films of all sorts, and has a more than decent knowledge of them, although horror is where his expertise lies. While able to critique with the best of them, he prefers to look at things in a more positive light.

When I was a kid growing up in the satanic panic of the early 90s, I was never allowed in the horror section of our local video shop. We were evangelical Christians who believed in "spiritual warfare," the idea that angels and demons are around us at all times, fighting for our soul. Watching movies like The Craft or Bram Stoker's Dracula could be an invitation for demonic possession. Looking back as an adult atheist, I don't see very much distance between the message I was taught by the church (Satan is everywhere, and you need the Bible to protect you) and that of many scary movies. It would make sense for Christian parents to show these movies to their kids as a biblical version of Schoolhouse Rock!

Most horror filmmakers aren't so overt in their proselytizing, and possibly don't have any conscious religious agenda at all, according to David Morgan, a religion and art history professor at Duke. Morgan has studied centuries of paintings and literature that use religious fear to shape societal behavior, and while he agrees that there is often a moralistic finger-wagging to horror films, he doesn't believe that they qualify as Christian propaganda. 2351a5e196
