Since the demise of the short-lived LED Lenser V24 earlier this decade, many light painters have been looking for a half-decent colour changing flashlight. Does the Color Shine Flashlight meet the modern day light painters needs?

The Color Shine flashlight is a bit larger than an 18650 tube light, with the head measuring 30mm in diameter. This means that it can be used with the Light Painting Brushes Universal Connector. It uses 3xAAA batteries that are placed in a battery tube. The battery tube only works if inserted wrong way around (i.e. arrow pointing to the tail of the light). There seems to be considerable excess space inside the light for the battery tube for some reason as can be seen on the x-ray image below. The tail cap unscrews, and has an on/off switch. The light only works when the tail cap is fully screwed on, which allows for mechanical lock-out to meet aviation requirements.

The Color Shine Flashlight is no substitute for the revered LED Lenser V24 - lets hope that the increasing popularity of light painting helps bring brighter and higher quality colour mixing flashlights to the market.

You are welcome to try to find some Android device that has a camera flash that uses different colors, then contact the manufacturer of that device to see if they exposed some SDK add-on to give apps control over that color. Nice combination of output options on this light. I really got it for its high lumen output. It throws a bright beam very far and doesn't get overheated like other high-lumen flashlights I have used in the past. The orange finish is a nice change considering all these black flashlights disappear in the dark.

You can buy a flashlight with blue, green or red light, for example, but there are also different types of white light. Which light colour do you need for which time of the day?

There are different types of white light. For instance, you have warm white light, neutral white light and cold white light. Neutral white light is in the middle of the colour spectrum. It has a Kelvin value of 4000. Warm white light is below that, at about 3000K. Cold white light is around 6000K. Warm white light has a yellowish colour and is often used in living spaces. Neutral white light is whiter than the warm white, but not as cold as the cold white colour. The colour is still slightly yellowish. Cold white light is often compared to daylight. White light is very suitable for weapon lights or powerful flashlights. It is also a good colour to use to illuminate the environment. However, using it does make your own natural night vision worse.

Are you referring to the exterior look of the flash? Does the flash work as expected? I don't think there's a difference between the flash on the 14 and 14 Pro models. I don't think I'd be concerned about the color of the flash on the outside, unless it is not working as it should.

I went on a night flight tonight after not flying for a few months. I didn't have any monochrome lights, so I actually just covered a flashlight of mine with red athletic tape (which acted as a filter really well).

The reason is simply that red light makes everything look red, and makes it hard to distinguish colors! Can you actually verify that the AVgas is light blue when you look at it under a red light? Can you see bright red, important items on a checklist? Reading red-text against a white background can be very difficult with a red light. On a VFR map, airport symbols are blue or magenta to indicate towered/untowered airports, but they both look the same under a red light.

Why does all this matter for flashlights? First of all, some people say that a certain color temperature is better or worse for viewing objects up close or at a distance. While personal preferences may vary, warm colored LEDs are typically better for close up work and for color rendition and cool colored LEDs are typically better for illuminating objects at a distance. Cool LEDs also work well with night vision because the eye responds faster to cool colored lights when the eyes have adjusted to complete darkness. Originally, most LED flashlights had bluer, cooler colored outputs, but now manufacturers like SureFire and TerraLUX are making products that specifically feature warm colored LEDs.

Color temperature in flashlights is an ongoing discussion. The majority of consumers do not necessarily think about color temperature while purchasing a flashlight. But with all the products available now, it makes it easier to pick and choose between the features that are important to you.
