Coco (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the Disney/Pixar's 2017 film of the same name. Released by Walt Disney Records on November 19, 2017,[1] the album features eight original songs written by Germaine Franco, Adrian Molina, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, four alternate versions and 26 score pieces composed by Michael Giacchino.[2]

On July 14, 2017, at the Disney D23 expo,[19] Michael Giacchino had confirmed that he will be scoring the music for Coco.[20][21] Later, Robert Lopez, and Kristen Anderson-Lopez also confirmed that they will be writing few original songs, while Germaine Franco and co-director Adrian Molina, also joined the team.[22] Recording for the score began on August 14, 2017.[23] "Franco orchestrated the score and wrote additional music, and she made numerous trips to Mexico to record local musicians. She also ended up contributing several original songs, including the joyous number "Un Poco Loco" and the heartfelt closer, "Proud Corazn."[24]

Originally, the film was meant to be a "break-into-song" musical.[25] Lopez and Anderson-Lopez had written many more songs for the film than what ended up in the released version; one piece that survived in storyboard until late into the production was an expository song that explained the Mexican holiday to viewers to begin the film. In another song, Miguel's mother explains the tradition of shoe-making in their family, and how this means he is not allowed to pursue music.[25] Plans for the film to be a full musical film were scrapped following early test screenings.[25]

Looking at the film soundtrack, I'm trying to work out which songs would have been the ones claimed by Ernesto de la Cruz as originals, the songs whose lyrics would have been included in Coco's book. The way I see it, we have:

Between the two of them, it is a mixed bag. I enjoyed the sountrack to Coco more in the long run, but mainly because it inlucded both the English and Spanish versions of everything. They both have some good memerable songs, and some problems. Remember Me has too many takes, and the pop song covers in BoL are too out of place.

Miguel idolizes Ernesto De La Cruz, a famous singer and actor from Mexico's golden age of cinema. The suave, fictional matinee idol was created as an homage to crooner Pedro Infante. "Remember me, though I have to say goodbye," he sings. "Remember me, don't let it make you cry." (This catchy anthem was written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, the duo that penned Oscar-winning songs from the movie Frozen.)

"Remember Me," penned by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who brought us the addictive tunes in Frozen, is certainly one of the more recognizable songs from the Coco soundtrack. It is performed by the character Ernesto de la Cruz, who is famous for performing canciones rancheras in charro film musicals from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, just like real-life legends Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante.

This concert film showcases not just the music from Coco, but also traditional Mexican songs and musical pieces. The program features the Hollywood Studio Symphony under the direction of Maestro Sarah Hicks with special appearance by Mariachi Divas. Because Miguel's original voice actor, Anthony Gonzalez, had hit puberty since the film was released, his younger brother, Alex Gonzalez sings Miguel's songs.

Chavela Vargas was born in Costa Rica in 1919, although she spent much of her life living in Mexico and identifying with the Mexican culture and people. She popularized many Mexican rancheras, or traditional songs, but also contributed a lot to Latin American music. In her younger days, she frequently dressed as a man, smoked cigars, drank, and overall defied gender expectations of the time. She carried this one step further by refusing to change the pronouns of the rancheras she sang, which were often written from the perspective of a man to a woman.

Bobby: We spent a good year working on the story, the characters and the concept of the show. It was around March 2021 when we wrote the songs for the first two episodes. The rest of the songs we had to cram into about four months.

Kristen: It was a great live action, but there wasn't the joy and the strong feelings that you'd want to hear songs about. So, we completely revamped the characters. The second child gets to be more of a wild kid. It's the first child who gets the pressure. We created an outline from there.

You have a band called Generation Sex with Steve Jones and Paul Cook. I assume you all have an easier time playing Pistols and Gen X songs together now and not worrying about getting spit on like back in the '70s?

With punk going so mega in England, we definitely got a leg up. We still had a lot of work to get where we got to, and rightly so because you find out that you need to do that. A lot of groups in the old days would be together three to five years before they ever made a record, and that time is really important. In a way, what was great about punk rock for me was it was very much a learning period. I really learned a lot [about] recording music and being in a group and even writing songs.
