In the original movie, the vast majority of prey animals (except for Zazu, Timon and Pumbaa) are portrayed as less sentient than their predators. Lions have exaggerated, expressive faces, but zebras, antelope, and giraffe are drawn in a more naturalistic way - at least in the first movie, and especially during The Circle of Life. This helps to play down the implication that when the lions kill and eat, they're targeting beings who share their human-level intellects.
