The Chemistry exam covers material that is usually taught in a one-year college course in general chemistry. Understanding of the structure and states of matter, reaction types, equations and stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, and descriptive and experimental chemistry is required, as is the ability to interpret and apply this material to new and unfamiliar problems. During this exam, an online scientific calculator function and a periodic table are available as part of the testing software.

Some questions are based on laboratory experiments widely performed in general chemistry and ask about the equipment used, observations made, calculations performed, and interpretation of the results. The questions are designed to provide a measure of understanding of the basic tools of chemistry and their applications to simple chemical systems.

We are pleased to welcome Michelle Chang as the A. Barton Hepburn Professor of Chemistry. Chang utilizes the approaches of mechanistic biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology to address problems in energy and human health.

Chemistry, the study of matter and its transformations, is central to all sciences. Because chemistry is so fundamental, it's important to most scientists and professionals including biologists, engineers, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, nutritionists, oceanographers and science teachers among others.

Our Department, and indeed the UC Riverside campus, continues to be in a period of rapid growth: outstanding faculty continue to join our Department, the numbers of graduate and undergraduate students continue to increase, a new chemistry building has been built.

Our mission is to advance discovery in the chemical sciences. We provide students with a comprehensive education in modern chemistry and biochemistry through a combination of lecture, laboratory, and original research experiences. We welcome you to explore all the department has to offer.

From the world-class RNA Institute to our program in Forensic Chemistry, our research spans all areas of chemistry. Our department is divided into five major divisions: Analytical and Forensic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Inorganic and Materials Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical and Computational Chemistry. Visit our research page to learn more!

Our students will study in these new facilities on the same cutting-edge equipment found in national labs and advanced industry. From energy storage and nanomaterials to the chemistry of food and cosmetics our students will be prepared for careers in materials chemistry.

Sitting between biology and physics, the field of chemistry is sometimes called the central science. This branch of science deals not with the most basic elements of reality, such as fundamental particles, or the complex world of living organisms, but the in-between world of atoms, molecules and chemical processes.

An important area of chemistry is the understanding of atoms and what determines how they react. It turns out reactivity is often largely mediated by the electrons that orbit atoms and the way these are exchanged and shared to create chemical bonds.

Organic chemistry, the study of compounds which contain carbon, connects up molecules in new ways to build and analyse an array of materials, from drugs to plastics to flexible electronics. Inorganic chemistry is the study of materials based primarily on elements other than carbon. Inorganic compounds can be pigments, fertilisers, catalysts and more.

Chemists help us understand the nature and properties of the world around us and the history of chemistry is replete with discoveries that have furthered this. Antoine Lavoisier paved the way for modern chemistry. He helped give the field structure by developing an ordered language and symbolism. And his understanding of the constituent parts of air, as well as the process of combustion, disproved centuries of incorrect thinking. But there is perhaps no more important chemist than Dmitri Mendeleev, the Russian who in 1869 wrote down the symbols for all the known chemical elements, arranging them according to their atomic weight. He had created the periodic table, making it possible to predict how any given element would react with another, the compounds it would form and what kind of physical properties it would have.

College faculty have been leaders at the frontiers of knowledge since 1872. Current pioneering research includes premier programs in catalysis, thermodynamics, chemical biology, atmospheric chemistry, the development of polymer, optical and semiconductor materials, and nanoscience, among others.

We are glad to announce the new PLU officers: President Amber Schuster, Vice President Sheryl Sharma, Secretary Jacob Jones, and Treasurer Micah Jeppesen! We are grateful to have been able to serve PLU and the chemistry department and know that the new officers will do an excellent job in the upcoming year.

The Chemistry Department at Bowdoin is committed to the development of students as investigators driven to understand and appreciate foundational principles of chemistry, apply these principles toward solving pressing societal problems (e.g. energy, medicine, environment) and create new knowledge via high-quality research at the frontiers of the field.

Chemistry majors at Beloit engage in project-based learning starting from the first course and become competent in running research-grade instrumentation. About two thirds of our graduates go to professional or graduate schools (chemistry, biochemistry, law, medical, dental, veterinary, nursing, physician assistant, physical therapy, engineering); one third go to work in academic, industrial, and government labs.

The Barnard College Chemistry Department offers courses for undergraduates who plan to major or minor in the physical and life sciences, as well as for students pursuing other liberal arts degrees. The department offers majors and minors in chemistry and biochemistry, both approved by the American Chemical Society.

In a three-year sequence of core courses, students gain familiarity with the basic areas of the field: inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and biological chemistry. Extensive laboratory work prepares students for success in graduate or professional research programs. The department contains modern laboratories designed for coursework and independent projects, and students may undertake independent research projects under faculty guidance during the academic year or over the summer.

UWEC provided me with the critical thinking and lab skills necessary to work as a paid summer intern for Univar, a global chemical distributor. The challenging and high-quality chemistry courses prepared me to face whatever problems I might find in the chemical industry.

Our undergraduate program readies students for modern chemistry challenges. Graduates can enter industry or pursue advanced degrees in chemistry, medicine, dentistry, or other fields. Faculty with teaching and research experience lead lectures and discussions, keeping students updated on the latest developments. Labs are directed by faculty and supported by teaching assistants, allowing individual attention in smaller groups.

Chemistry offers a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and a dual degree consisting of the B.S. in chemistry and the bachelor of chemical engineering degree through the Atlanta University Consortium Dual-Degree Enrollment Program.

All students begin with a one-year course sequence that engages students in the competencies needed for the practice of chemistry as a modern science. In subsequent terms, students are expected to complete both introductory and in-depth course work in the five sub disciplines of modern chemistry: analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, bio and biophysical chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. In addition, one advanced elective course in chemistry is also required.

The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary study and scientific discovery at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We seek to create independent thinkers capable of addressing and solving the next generation of scientific and technological problems. Currently, we have 35 faculty and more than 400 Chemistry majors and 70 graduate students. We recently introduced two new graduate programs in chemistry: An Accelerated BS+MS program as well as a non-thesis MS program in Chemistry to serve those that work in industry who want to further their education.
