You're the bravest of hearts, you're the strongest of souls

You're my light in the dark, you're the place I call home

You can say it's all right, but I know that you're breaking upinside

I see it in your eyes

Even you face the night afraid and alone

That's why I'll be there

When the storm rises up, when the shadows descend

Ev'ry beat of my heart, ev'ry day without end

Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make

Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes

If that's what it takes

When the storm rises up, when the shadows descend

Ev'ry beat of my heart, ev'ry day without end

I will stand like a rock, I will bend till I break

Till there's no more to give, if that's what it takes

I will risk everything, I will fight, I will bleed

I will lay down my life, if that's what you need

Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make

Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes

Through the wind and the rain, through the smoke and the fire

When the fear rises up, when the wave's ever higher

I will lay down my heart, my body, my soul

I will hold on all night and never let go

Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make

Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes

The song has also received some criticism. In 2011, Rolling Stone readers ranked it the seventh worst song of the 1990s, with the magazine writing, "Celine Dion's song and the movie have aged very poorly...Now [the song] probably just makes you cringe."[31] The Atlantic attributed the song's decline in popularity to its overexposure and added that over the years there have been many jokes that parody the song's lyrics by claiming "My Heart Will Go On" goes "on and on and on".[32] Vulture reasoned that it has become fashionable to dislike the song because it "encapsulates most everything that once-enthusiastic moviegoers now dislike about Titanic: it's outdated, cheesy, and overly dramatic".[29] Maxim deemed it "the second most tragic event ever to result from that fabled ocean liner".[32]

It was included later on the Back to Titanic second soundtrack album, but it does not appear on the 20th anniversary edition. In France, "My Heart Will Go On" was released as a double A-side single with "The Reason". In the Let's Talk about Love album booklet, the lyrics of the song contain an additional line between a second chorus and the final verse. The words "There is some love that will not go away" are not performed by Dion in any available version of the song, however, they are still included on Dion's official site.

In the history of cinema, it is rare that a soundtrack gains just as much of a cult following as the film it was composed. for. My Heart Will Go On ends Titanic with a firework display of emotions and lyricism. The song, performed by Cline Dion, became a classic in the singer's repertoire, after the film's tsunami of success when it was released in 1997. Despite a career chock-a-block with hits, it is this song in particular that the public wants to hear at every concert. And for good reason, as well as being linked to the most epic and tragic love story in cinema over the last thirty years, the song itself is exceptionally powerful. The melody is instantly recognizable from the very first notes, the lyrics already memorized by every listener, and the entire song is catapulted by the voice of one of the greatest divas in the world.

Ev'ry beat of my heart, ev'ry day without end

But the reason that poetry is not universally treasured as is popular music is that there is no attending ambience. The lyrics work with the music to create a synesthetic gestalt. I even put my poetry on audio visual form for my own personal enjoyment.

Very interesting interview, Chris though, as a musician myself, I fight the common idea that a song is its lyrics and what they are about. Tom Kelly' "melody and chords" ARE the song to any listener who doesn't understand the lyrycs.

I think songwriting is a form of art where lyrics don't survive without music. Many pathetic love songs are masterpieces because of the melody but their lyrics wouldn't make it in a poetry book. And yet an instrumental rendition of a song is still that particular song.

It's fascinating to read how differently people approach the process. Bach is said to have started with the bass line. Rush started with melody and added lyrics near-last, as did Pink Floyd. To start with lyrics would be a whole other dynamic. In Billy's & Tom's success, it's evident they made that kind of process work well.

Most of your successful collaborations, like “Eternal Flame” and “Like a Virgin”, were written with Tom Kelly. From what I understand, the division of labor was such that you wrote the lyrics and he wrote the music. Did you ever help with the arrangements or melodies? Or were you just handing him the lyrics and letting him run with it?

I would say that I was writing all of the lyrics, and he was writing most of the music, but we were always in each other’s presence. It wasn’t like Bernie Taupin and Elton John. I wasn’t just handing Tom Kelly a lyric and saying, “See what you can do with this. Bye!” We would sit together.

I’ll tell you part of the reason it took us a while to get things going. I had written a batch of songs for my group Billy Thermal that included “How Do I Make You” [later a hit for Linda Ronstadt] and “Precious Time” [later a hit for Pat Benatar]. We were signed to Planet Records at the time. Then I met Tom Kelly. I found that my arsenal of ideas for songs was somewhat depleted. Even though I wanted to write great lyrics with Tom, I didn’t have much ammunition. I could tell we had the potential to write well together, but I didn’t have any great lyrics immediately. As time went on, I was able to bring in some interesting lyrics like “True Colors” and “Like a Virgin”.

“I Touch Myself” by the Divinyls is a good example. A lot of people focus on the title. But the first line of the song is “I love myself. I want you to love me.” That’s powerful. All of those lyrics in that first verse are double entendre. You could hear that first line and think, “I love myself. I masturbate. I want you to do it for me.” But you could also think, “I love myself, and I’m lonely. I want someone else to love me.” You hear, “I search myself. I want you to find me,” and that could be anatomical or existential. ff782bc1db
