Not all cutting-edge physics requires a particle accelerator. Using a straw and some soap, researchers have shown how a popping bubble can produce more bubbles. The work is published in this week's issue of Nature1.

James Bird, now a postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, first noticed the effect while working on another experiment for his PhD at nearby Harvard University. When a bubble on a fluid's surface popped, Bird noticed that a ring of small bubbles formed where the bubble's edge had once stood.

"We saw this effect and couldn't really explain it," he recalls. So he and his colleagues decided to investigate. They began blowing bubbles through a straw and filming them with a high-speed camera as they popped.

Previous work had suggested that a ruptured bubble might vanish or break up and fall to the surface, but Bird saw something different. Rather than exploding, the walls of the bubble actually fold back on themselves. As they do so, they trap a small doughnut-shaped ring of air that breaks up when it hits the surface of the fluid. The result is a ring of smaller bubbles (see movie 1).

The work is impressive in its scope, says Jens Egger, a mathematician at the University of Bristol, UK. "What's nice about this paper is that it's taken a small problem and found this beautiful structure," he says. Even daughter bubbles can burst and create more, even smaller bubbles, notes Eggers. "Self-similar structures just seem to be nature's way of making small things."

"Bubbles can be really useful in certain contexts and detrimental in others," Bird says. For example, bubbles are a constant worry in glass manufacturing because they can weaken material. In the oceans, however, bubbles can have a useful role by helping to convert salt into an aerosol, a crucial step in creating clouds. Small bubbles in particular seem able to project tiny particles into the air (see movie 2).

Meanwhile, Bird's work with bubbles is not yet done. He has just been awarded a one-year fellowship from the US National Science Foundation to continue his research. "I thought I was going to be done with bubbles, but no, it keeps going," he says.

The ESA in particular has been instrumental preventing extinction of many species of vertebrates.

This time of year many of us are preparing for the holiday season and plan to celebrate with family and friends. Historically through the 19th century, there was a winter tradition among North Americans to participate in "side hunts," in which they competed at how many birds they could kill, regardless of species, population size, or use for the carcasses. In 1900 U.S. ornithologist Frank Chapman suggested that instead of shooting birds, nature lovers and bird enthusiasts should count them. That year was the first Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which is now administered by the National Audubon Society.

The CBC is an annual winter census of birds in the western hemisphere that is performed by volunteer birdwatchers. The event began with bird conservation in mind, and continues to serve that purpose to this day. This year will be the 117 annual CBC, with as many as 70,000 individuals participating throughout the western hemisphere. The annual bird count does not only occur in the United States, with National Audubon partners including Bird Studies Canada, bird organizations in Mexico, Nacional de Observadores de Aves, and the Instituto Alexander von Humboldt of Colombia, providing as comprehensive a dataset as possible.

This type of citizen science can provide long-term, wide-reaching data that single researchers and research institutions cannot attain. Results from the annual census provide key information on population changes over decades, and can identify trends while they are still occurring. To date, over 200 peer-reviewed articles have resulted from analysis done with CBC data. Christmas Bird Count results have also been used by U.S. federal agencies as an important basis for making policy decisions about bird conservation.

In addition, local fishermen said that nurseries in the Gulf, responsible for producing 40 percent of America's seafood, are being destroyed by the oil and the chemical soup created by the mixing of oil dispersant Corexit 9500. Corexit is breaking down the crude oil into small oil bubbles and a watery oil mixture that is seeping under the booms set up to protect sensitive fish nurseries, oyster beds, and other pristine areas. Many Atlantic fish species also spawn in the Gulf and they are also threatened by the oil disaster. Even barnacles, one of the most resistant sea creatures to extreme situations, are dying in vast numbers, along with sponges and coral.

Also coming in for criticism is the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has remained silent as federal incident commanders have ordered home wildlife rescue workers from Texas and other states. One group that was told to pack its bags was the non-profit Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. from Texas, which has 20 years of experience in handling animal rescues from oil spills. BP hired the O'Brien Group, a subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as its wildlife rescue coordinator. Local environmentalists view O'Brien as a shill for BP. 2351a5e196
