For a few months I have been troubleshooting no audio coming from brave-browser installed on my Ubuntu 20.04 machine. For example, if I use the same YouTube URL in Brave and Firefox, I get audio from Firefox but not Brave. This lack of audio still occurs if I do a fresh install of Brave, Brave-beta, Brave-nightly, or Chromium - suggesting an issue with Chromium based browsers. Again, however, audio does work when I use Firefox.

After months of troubleshooting, I discovered I had both a Brave recommended installed version of Brave (i.e. through their website) and a snap installation of Brave. While I am not sure how this resulted in no audio from the browser, deletion of all snap based software restored the audio function of brave.

The video shows up on the site I'm making as a gray rectangle with controls (in a Brave browser). When I press play nothing happens. I also tried opening my page in Firefox and within the gray rectangle it says "No video with supported format and MIME type found."

Brave is a more-or-less standard browser that lets users navigate to websites, run web apps, and display online content. Like other browsers, it is free to download and use, remembers site authentication information, and can block online ads from appearing on sites.

Brave scrubs sites of ads and ad tracking, then replaces those ads with its own advertisements, which are not individually targeted but instead aimed at an anonymous aggregate of the browser's user base. Brave has said it went that route rather than a simpler all-ad-elimination model because, while few users relish ads, many realize that without them, the commercial web as it now exists would be nigh impossible. That's why, claimed Brave, it not only swapped its advertisements for those originally displayed by a site, but built a cyrpto-currency-based system that can, theoretically at least, compensate those same websites.

Brave Software's financial foundation rests on something completely different: Its share of ad revenue. Unlike other browsers, which only display websites in an ecosystem where those sites are earning ad revenue, Brave has inserted itself into the money stream. Brave is the entity earning revenue from ads, even though the user views the same site as, for example, Edge, which earns nothing.

The Brave browser's business model is based on its share of ad revenue. Unlike other browsers that only display websites, Brave earns revenue from ads by taking a 15% cut of publisher ads and a 30% cut of user ads. User ads are notification-style pop-ups, while publisher ads are viewed on or in association with publisher content. Brave expects to generate revenue from selling Basic Attention Tokens (BATs) to advertisers, letting users earn them while viewing ads and content.[3]

Since April 2019, users of the Brave browser can opt in to the Brave Rewards feature. Users can earn BAT by viewing advertisements that are displayed as notifications by the operating system of their computer or device or as a native pop-up window. Advertising campaigns are matched with users by inference from their browsing history; this targeting is carried out locally, with no transmission of personally identifiable data outside the browser.[36]

ZDNET briefly reviewed Brave in July 2021, offering mixed feedback. Writer Adrian Kingsley-Hughes found Brave to be the better option over Google Chrome for privacy, but found the default ads promoting cryptocurrency trading to be at odds with Brave's purported priorities, stating "(...) it's true that it does display ads, and there are links to several cryptocurrency services. They're "safe" ads, and you can turn them off, but it wasn't what some people expected to see in a browser that had been billed as putting privacy at its core."[111]

After you get the prompt to enter the administrator password you can just click on NO and after that you get the message from the browser installation wizard telling you Brave-Release (or the name of the browser you are installing) can be installed without administrator privileges. In a post on Github, Brian Clifton, the VP of Engineering @brave, explains more of the situation. The change to install the VPN services went live in this update which is dated April 4th of this year. There are two services installed, the Brave VPN Wireguard Service and the Brave VPN Service, neither of which are explained to a user downloading the Brave browser, nor do they get consent.

thank you for the reply. I am using Android 13. I'm using the Chrome browser, not the app. The play tray just disappeared recently. It does appear fine though in the Samsung and Brave browsers.
