Unfortunately, neither of these apps have aarch64 builds, so I was hoping I could use box64 to install them. However, I can't get the AppImage to work (box64 complains about some missing libraries, which led to me finding some posts talking about how box64 doesn't support AppImages yet), and flatpak just acts like it doesn't exist. When I follow the instructions from here and enter flatpak install flathub com.plexamp.Plexamp in the terminal, it just says error: Nothing matches com.plexamp.Plexamp in remote flathub. So it looks like flatpak is filtering this out because it doesn't have an aarch64 build, which is understandable, but it begs the question: how does anyone install anything that box64 is intended to run? I can't find any documentation on this (most of the documentation I've been able to find just acts like box64 is intended to work transparently under the hood), and all of my attempts at using it have failed.

At any rate, I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around how installing apps via box64 is intended to work, and I was thinking some of y'all in this sub might have some experience here. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I was having an error when trying to compile box86 on arm64 (marm not recognized). I found on github a good solution -jrql/box86-and-box64-for-arm64/ . Basically it is the same as shown here, but the box86 is compiled on armhf and then copied to arm64. You can download box86 from the link. For wine I used regular tutorial from box86 site and had no issues. Just wanted to post a reference here in case somebody else has similar problems.

Also, I have the same problem runining box86 with chroot (wich I had installed following the older rna guide). I thought that it was because of the lack of box64 in the envirioment, but aparently it's not.

it started with updating pi apps, it had to uninstall box64 and reinstall it to update, but it failed to install, i tried reinstalling it afterwards, and it still wouldnt work. after looking into the files to see what was happening, i found logs about the install fail, i went to the discord link it had and then they said some apt files were broken. i tried updating, and it failed and said this: E: The repository ' -daily/ppa/ubuntu impish Release' does not have a Release file.

N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.

N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

The PPA that you have added there does not publish any packages for 21.10 Impish release. The error message you are receiving is because apt doesn't know how to proceed because there is nothing it can use in that repository. If you remove that PPA you should be able to do normal updates again but that doesn't exactly help with the software you are trying to install. Can you post a link to the article you followed to install box64?

Only thing I tried so far with box86/box64 installed was Zachtronics superb TS-100, which runs, but is scaled weirdly (I think down to 800x480?) making text unreadable and thus the game is unplayable sadly.

box64 needs access to various system files usually inaccessible to confined apps since the intended usecase is to run applications downloaded from the web, and those apps might require any possible combination of permissions unavailable to strict confinement, including access to either system-wide multiarch x86_64 libraries or some located in an arbitrary sysroot path. As such, I would like to request an exception for classic confinement for box64-with-gl4es.

From what I can see, as per the Process for reviewing classic confinement snaps, box64-with-gles does not appear to fit within one of the supported categories for classic confinement. Also note, that there are many other similar emulator snaps in the snap store (dosbox, scummvm, retroarch) none of which require classic confinement.

Are you planning to do some gaming on Arm devices? You need to take a look at the box86 and box64 projects, which are really quite impressive. Since the majority of software (especially games) are built for x86 processors (the usual Intel / AMD crop), Arm needs something stuck in between to get them running and that's exactly what these projects do.

PtitSeb: Yes, you can donate for box64/box86 developpement. I have setup a GitHub sponsor page, but there is also a simple Paypal donation option. For hardware, my mail address is not public so you need to contact me first for this.

You seem to be misinformed. Since most of the software in the repositories are Free and Open source, they have already been compiled, and readily available for ARM. According to , the arm64 repository for Debian Sid has 62542 packages, whereas the amd64 repository has 63568 packages (as of 18th Nov, 2021). People usually use box64 to emulate proprietary software created for Windows.

I have a raspberry pi 4b 8gb running ubuntu 21.10 desktop that I use. I want ot expand the uses of my pi and I want to run some windows programs. I installed pi-apps, a program helps you install many apps of all kinds; many, including box64 (box64 is an x86 emulator) require wine. I tried to install wine with sudo apt install wine, but at the end of the install it says /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) and wine does not work. I have not the smallest Idea how to fix it. I only can find builds and installs for a pi 3 running raspberry pi os. I need an answer for a pi 4 running ubuntu.

Its been a while since this post showed how to use lightburn on box64. since then a lot has changed in both lightburn and box64, for one the sign-in is now working properly, but unfortunately lightburn now needs more libraries.

Using DynaRec on arm64, box64 will dynamically recompile x64_64 code toaarch64 but will also translate calls to foreign library functions tonative library calls. This usually makes amd64 executables run viabox64 much faster than emulating amd64 on arm64 via qemu which willemulate everything down to the C library. For example OpenArena emulatedwith box64 will be at about 85% of its native speed. This package contains the generic executable without optimization for aspecific platform.
