One might say that they can copy the code from the Bootstrap.css file and paste it withing tags but even that is internal css and e-mails don't allow that. E-mails only allow inline css. So, Bootstrap can't be used in e-mails, and hence not in e-mail templates.

You could use it theoretically, as long as you have some process that inlines styles (if you care about Outlook users), and as long as you only use HTML/CSS that is supported by the majority of email clients.

So I have an email function which would send an email to the user, and of course I wouldn't want it to be just a plain text/html. I want it to have some design into it, am using bootstrap 4 for my design on the website so I'm planning to use bootstrap 4 for designing the email message too. I doubt very much you will be able to use BSS for that purpose. The reason being is that email templates are still using the outdated forms of code setups and a lot of inline styling yet. You would most likely end up having to do it all in the code manually by adding a Custom Code block with the entire code in it that you want to use. Of course, that would defeat the purpose of using BSS as you would lose all styilng and setup abilities within the app settings.

What is worth bearing in mind is that there are so many email clients that it can be worth spending a few dollars/pounds/euros etc on the right software to get it right. If your sending an email that looks a mess it can lose you business.

2: You need to create the mailer template which will wrap the email content. Create the file /app/views/layouts/bootstrap-mailer.html.erb and paste this HTML into it. (It is very similar to the default mailer).
