Soldiers overthrew President Ali Bongo a few days ago after he was declared winner of a third term in its Aug. 25 election. The military claimed the election, which had no international observers, had been flawed. It ended nearly 56 years of rule by the Bongo family during which a love and spending on music stars was a consistent theme with little regard for the conditions in which ordinary citizens live.

3. Studeo - I'm Falling For You 4:11 - This is another Bongo Boy band that I really like. The intro is dominated by a very emotional, sad guitar. When her vocals come in the song hits a new level as the band locks in. That tremendous voice and the excellent guitar work would bring out the emotion in even the most hard-core biker. The bottom line is that this is a very good song. Love songs, as Bongo Boy defines them are songs first and about love second. This stuff is much better than that muzak made up of Silly Love Songs (cough cough Paul McCart-ney cough cough). With this track, Studeo remains one of my favorite Bongo Boy artists.

So what is the bottom line? Bongo Boy has once again made clear that a love song is a song first and about love second. The lyrics on all of these songs are sensitive and even heart touch-ing, but it is the music that stands out in my mind. The music is good, very good. This album would make a fine addition to any collection.

Few people understand the language of love better than bongo flava artists. Their grasp of vernacular places them on a different level compared to other artists singing in Swahili. Perhaps this explains the popularity of this Tanzanian genre, whose standard-bearers include Diamond Platnumz, Zuchu, Harmonize, Rayvanny and Nandy, among many others.

Their risqu lyrics, delivered with unstinting imagery, are the reason these hits have become love anthems for a generation. And with the artists churning out song after song, bongo flava will no doubt continue to be the staple of East African radio in 2023.

Music In Africa has made a selection of bongo flava songs that are ruling the airwaves and blowing up the streams this year. Be sure to bookmark this playlist as we update it with more music throughout 2023.

In December 1975 when she was 19 years of age, M'Pongo met saxophonist Empompo Loway, who resolved to help her develop a singing career[5] and persuaded her to leave her secretary job.[2] After an initial failure to secure M'Pongo patronage, the two met band manager Ngwango Isionoma, who agreed to supply them with money to start her career.[6] Loway assisted her in forming a band, Tcheke Tcheke Love, and composed her first songs. M'Pongo debuted with the song "Pas possible Maty" and soon thereafter delivered her first concert at the Cin Palladium in Kinshasa. Throughout 1977 she performed with an additional backing group, Les Ya tupa's (with members such as Ray Lema, Flix Manuaku Waku, and Alfred Nzimbi), singing compositions by Mayaula Mayoni, Simaro Lutumba, and Souzy Kaseya. Her rendition of Mayaula's "Ndaya" became a hit success in Kinshasa, especially among local women.[2] ff782bc1db
