The Boeing 737 Classic is a series of narrow-body airliners produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the second generation of the Boeing 737 series of aircraft.Development began in 1979 and the first variant, the 737-300, first flew in February 1984 and entered service that December.The stretched 737-400 first flew in February 1988 and entered service later that year. The shortest variant, the 737-500, first flew in June 1989 and entered service in 1990.

In March 1981, USAir and Southwest Airlines each ordered 10 aircraft of the 737-300 series, with an option for 20 more. That aircraft, the initial model of the 737 Classic series, first flew in February 1984 and entered service in December of that year with Southwest Airlines. A further stretched model, the 737-400, was launched with an order for 25 aircraft with 30 options from Piedmont Airlines in June 1986. That aircraft first flew in February 1988 and entered service later that year with Piedmont Airlines. The final model of the series, the 737-500, was launched with an order for 30 aircraft from Southwest Airlines in May 1987. That aircraft, which was designed as a replacement for the 737-200 and had similar passenger capacity and dimensions, as well as the longest range of any member of the 737 Classic family, first flew in June 1989 and entered service with Southwest Airlines in 1990.

Throughout the 1980s, the 737 Classic series attracted large orders from airlines in the United States and Europe, with its order totals exceeding those of preceding 737 models. By far, the most successful model was the 737-300, with deliveries totaling 1,113 aircraft (the 737-400 and -500 reached 486 and 389 deliveries, respectively). Major operators included US carriers, small national airlines, and charter carriers.By the 1990s, when regular Boeing customer United Airlines bought the Airbus A320, this prompted Boeing to update the slower, shorter-range 737 Classic -400 into the rewinged, updated, more efficient, longer 737NG-800.[7]Production of the 737 Classic continued alongside that of the Next Generation for a period of time; the first 737-700 was completed in December 1996; the last 737 Classic was completed in February 2000.

Alaska Airlines was the first to convert one of their 400s from regular service to an aircraft with the ability to handle 10 pallets.[15] The airline has also converted five more into fixed combi aircraft for half passenger and freight. Boeing has produced over 10,000 aircraft from its popular 737 series, with several different sub-families. One of these was the 737 Classic, which the US planemaker built between 1981 and 2000. This comprises the 737-300, -400, and -500 variants. As time goes on, these aircraft are becoming rather rare. Here's a look at the remaining active US-based 737-400s.

Let's start by establishing the 737-400's place in the Classic family as a whole. It was the second of the series' three variants to enter service, doing so in September 1988 with Piedmont Airlines. By this point, the 737-300 had already been active for almost four years, and it would be almost 18 months before Southwest received the first 737-500.

The 737-400 turned out to be the largest Classic series aircraft, with Boeing design it to fit between the 737-300 and larger 757-200 in terms of capacity. Clocking in at 36.4 meters long, it could typically seat 147 passengers across two classes, or 168 in a high-density all-economy setup. It had the Classic series' shortest range, measuring 2,060 NM (3,820 km).

According to data from ch-aviation.com, there are 74 examples of the Boeing 737-400 (across 31 operators) that are still active worldwide today. Of these, 20 are registered in the US, with charter carrier iAero Airways being the dominant operator. Indeed, this Miami-based airline flies 17 of the aging twinjets, and also has another two inactive examples.

The carrier dates back to 1997, when it began life as Swift Air. When it switched to iAero Airways in 2019, the airline retained its Swift Air LLC corporate identity. This meant it didn't need to have its operating certificates and licenses re-issued. The carrier's 737-400s are 29.8 years old on average, with the oldest (N418US) dating back 32.71 years to February 1989.

Data from RadarBox.com shows that iAero Airways deploys the 737-400 to a diverse range of destinations. Of course, this is to be expected from the random world of charter flights. At the time of writing, it had recently flown the type to countries such as Guatemala (from McAllen, Texas) and the Dominican Republic (from Miami), as well as domestically.

The remaining three active 737-400s in the US belong to a division of the country's government. Specifically, they fly for the Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System, known in short as JPATS. This operator is responsible for transporting those in custody across the country, between institutions like prisons and courthouses. JPATS' Boeing 737-400s are slightly younger than those of iAero Airways, at 29.2 years old on average.

The -400 series first debuted in 1984, utilizing an extended fuselage and upgraded performance, increased both cargo & passenger capacity on medium haul flights. Passenger versions of the 737-400 can accommodate up to 147 passengers, offering a range of just over 2,000 nautical miles. Some 737-400 VIP models are also available for charter, with executive cabin configurations and amenities for luxury & business travel.

The B737-400F is a dedicated freighter conversion of the narrow-body airliner. Benefiting from the increase power & range over the previous model, the 737-400F has to ability to haul a max payload of just over 20 tons. Although Boeing never offered it as a production model, many operators converted existing 737-400 passenger models into freighters as newer airliners replaced it in commercial service. The first to do so was Alaska Airlines, with the ability to haul 10 pallets. Several operators followed, creating popular fleets of 737-400 freighters that offered excellent medium range capabilities for cargo & freight deliveries.

Still in service, 737-400 Freighters are available for charter, purchase, and lease in various regions around the world. These models were most recently valued at approximately $7 million pre-owned and $100,000 per month in late 2018.
