To turn on Dark Mode in Windows 11, go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and choose Dark. To make a custom dark theme, go to Settings > Personalization > Themes > Custom > Choose your default Windows mode > Dark.

As the name suggests, dark mode Outlook is a darker-colored version of Outlook. More specifically, in the default Outlook theme, the background is light, and the text is dark. Dark mode is the inverse of this.

The 2 usual places for dark mode settings aren't available in my outlook install. Usually there's the option under File->Options->General->Personalize, or found in File->Office Account but neither location has the option.

I've been using Outlook 2016 for a while now with no issues. The February 2016 update became available recently and I applied the update this morning (version 16.0.6568.205 - it adds the black theme availability).

Are you using the black theme when this is happening? I tried using it all day today and it feels like my cursor is sluggish and that it takes just a moment to catch up the words I'm typing, but I'll try to pay attention to its placement and see if it actually moves backwards.

As I know, we can also change our Office theme in other Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel. So, you could try to change your Office themes from Microsoft Word and Excel and see if it could helps.

It generally leaves areas that already have dark backgrounds alone, resulting in a fully Dark Mode design. Fortunately, most email clients that use this method also support Dark Mode targeting, so you can override the client-default dark theme.

Themes empower you to enhance your Outlook for Mac experience by changing the color scheme of the app to one of six preset theme colors. They also enable you to increase the visibility, address any accessibility needs you might have, or simply beautify the user interface to suit your needs and interests. You can apply a theme in both Light Mode and Dark Mode, as well as when using high-contrast system settings.

When Outlook is using the dark theme, you can switch dark mode on and off for the current message using the dark mode toggle button. Click the Switch Background button at the top of the message window to the left of the Reply button. The button changes from looking like a lightbulb to a moon depending on whether you've turned dark mode on or off for that message.

Update: Looking around some more I see if you go into an email and then Office Button -> Editor Options -> Theme you can choose between 3 default themes (blue, black and silver) but the only thing I can see that updates in the registry is the key at:

People with astigmatism (approximately 50% of the population) find it harder to read white text on black than black text on white. Part of this has to do with light levels: with a bright display (white background) the iris closes a bit more, decreasing the effect of the "deformed" lens; with a dark display (black background) the iris opens to receive more light and the deformation of the lens creates a much fuzzier focus at the eye.

Now there seem to be varying factors into contrast and legibility. Room ambient lighting. Brightness of the monitor. Also you can mitigate the straining effects of white (#FFF) on black (#000) by simply lessening the contrast like using a light gray (#EEE, #DDD, #CCC) on a dark background (#111, #222).

You may be talking about strain and not personal taste. One thing I know, though, is that it is somewhat physically painful to look at themes that have dark backgrounds with extremely bright (high brightness and saturation) foreground icons/text. If you choose dark backgrounds, lessen the brightness and saturation but make it still readable without effort.

The black theme has been around in Outlook for Windows for some time. However, unlike Outlook Web App, or, Microsoft Teams, the black theme was not a true dark mode. Some aspects of the black theme were still fully illuminated, such as when you read or composed a message.

It is also possible to turn the lights on for both the message preview and composition screens. This can be useful if an email is not rendering properly in the black theme, or, you simply need to make the message brighter.

I am on Monthly Channel version 1909. Dark mode is not available, even though I have the black theme selected. Others have noticed this as well and reported in the Office support community. No response from MSFT as of yet.

In terms of readability, ensuring a higher contrast between text and background is more important than colour scheme, according to Cox. If the contrast is the same between normal and dark modes, she says we might not expect a difference in legibility, although our familiarity with black text on a white background might offer this display mode a slight edge.

One claim about dark mode that has a greater grounding in evidence is its battery saving attributes. However, this depends on the type of screen your phone has. For OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens, dark mode does offer a battery conserving benefit. This is because in this screen type, each pixel lights up individually, meaning that when the pixel is black it's deactivated. For older LCD screens there is no advantage because these are backlit, meaning that even when displaying black, the pixels are lit up.

Ok, I think this might be a bug because when I changed the configuration from black to white while the UI theme is different from what I had defined in the configuration file. The changes did not take effect until manually did it inside the UI.

You could also turn on the Automatic option for Dark and Light themes. Doing so means that your phone will change the Theme automatically depending on the timeframes you will have defined.
