During his first visit to the West he travelled to the UK twice, in 1895 and 1896, lecturing successfully there.[126] In November 1895, he met Margaret Elizabeth Noble an Irish woman who would become Sister Nivedita.[125] During his second visit to the UK in May 1896 Vivekananda met Max Mller, a noted Indologist from Oxford University who wrote Ramakrishna's first biography in the West.[117] From the UK, Vivekananda visited other European countries. In Germany, he met Paul Deussen, another Indologist.[127] Vivekananda was offered academic positions in two American universities (one the chair in Eastern Philosophy at Harvard University and a similar position at Columbia University); he declined both, since his duties would conflict with his commitment as a monk.[125]

In 1896 he met Max Muller of Oxford University, who was an Indologist and was the first person to write biography of Swami Vivekanandaji's Guru Ramkrishna Paramahansaji in the West. Given his knowledge and scholarship, the proposal [Academic Poste] in Howard University and Columbia University was offered [Offer], but due to the stereotypes of his monastic life Swamiji rejected this offer.

Having been introduced to Thomas Sturge Moore, Purohit Swami was busy writing an autobiography, a biography of Shri Bhagwan Hamsa and his own poems in Britain. Moore introduced the Purohit to William Butler Yeats and from there formed a strong friendship and literary relationship. Yeats wrote the introductions for Purohit Swami's works. They then decided to work together on a translation of the Upanishads for which they went to Majorca in 1935. Purohit Swami was beset by ill-health during the latter part of his time in Britain and after his time in Majorca sailed directly back to India.

Purohit Swami was involved in various scandals during his time in Britain. He fell out with Thomas Sturge Moore because Moore felt he was not properly acknowledged for his help in editing Purohit Swami's autobiography and felt that he had been paid off by the Purohit. Rumours also circulated about Purohit Swami's relationship with a Gwyneth Foden who lived close by in Lancaster Gate and falsely gave the impression that she would finance his ashram.

In the West, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th-century mystic, coined the term "spiritual marriage" to refer to the ecstasy of the soul in union with God. Prayer and contemplation were practiced primarily in monasteries, by people who had joined religious orders. The famous mystics of Catholicism were from Spain, and William James mentions all three: Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order; Saint Teresa of vila, who reformed the Carmelite order of nuns; and Saint John of the Cross, who extended Teresa's reform to the Carmelite monks. Saint Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises, a series of meditations, prayers, and contemplations meant to develop openness and responsiveness to God. One aspect of these exercises is an imaginative recreation of certain scenes from the life of Jesus. Saint Teresa set out to reform the Carmelites after an intense period of spiritual activity, in which she experienced repeated visions of God and union with him. Teresa wrote extensively about her spiritual life in her autobiography (Life of the Mother Teresa of Jesus, written in the 1560s) and elaborated on four stages of mystical prayer in other texts, particularly Interior Castle (1588) and The Way of Perfection (1583). Saint John of the Cross also experienced union with God and famously wrote about it in his poem Dark Night of the Soul (written between 1577 and 1579). 2351a5e196
