The merger is the latest in a month that has seen colossal deals in the video gaming universe including the historic acquisition by Microsoft in landing Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion dollars. Also included in the notable consolidations, Take Two who owns Rockstar and 2K Games kicked off the year with the news that the company had taken on mobile-game authority Zynga in a deal valued at $12.7 billion.

That has all translated into storybook-level for success for Marvel. Four of the 16 films in its MCU franchise have earned over a billion dollars each at the global box office (The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War), and Spider-Man: Homecoming looks likely to join that club. The $12 billion the studio has earned with these 16 films has left behind such other giant franchises as the Harry Potter movies ($7.7 billion over 8 films), the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies ($5.8 billion over 6 films) and the Fast and Furious films ($5.1 billion across 8 films).

Kotick mentioned in the fourth quarter earnings report in February that the company expects Destiny to be the publisher's "next billion dollar franchise" and "the best-selling new video game IP in history." With its first quarter results expected to be revealed today, its fourth quarter earnings were better than expected. The company brought in more than $1.5 billion in revenue, while it earned $4.58 billion in GAAP net revenues during the 2013 calendar year, down from $4.85 billion in the previous year.

Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, told CNET that sales exceeded even his bullish expectations. Earlier, he had said he expected the game could sell as many as 10 million units this year if it got good reviews. He now expects sales to reach as high as 18 million units. "Destiny appears well-positioned to become Activision Publishing's third billion-dollar franchise," he told CNET.

This is not the biggest video game launch in history, but the biggest for a new franchise. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V sold more units on its first day, and reached $1 billion in sales in three days, making it the fastest video game to gross $1 billion.

Speaking today during an earnings call, Hirshberg said Destiny is on pace to set the all-time preorder record for a new franchise--at Activision and across the industry. And based on the company's internal estimates, the game is set to become Activision Publishing's third active billion-dollar franchise, joining Call of Duty and Skylanders.

Instead of thinking of an acquisition in terms of dollars, think of it in terms of years. How many years would it take you to grow into the valuation being offered or solicited? My partner Eric Paley wrote a great post with a framework on how to think about exit values and selling out without selling your soul. Thinking in years forces you to consider opportunity cost and risk, in addition to pure monetary value, both of which can be clarifying considerations.

More recently, Beyonc voiced Nala in Disney's "The Lion King: The Gift" in 2019. She was paid $25 million for her role in the film, which grossed more than $1 billion, and won her first Oscar for best original song.

"Since the beginning, we've been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we'd be able to say it did so on day one," said Eric Hirshberg, head of Activision's game publishing arm. "We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation, and Activision's next billion dollar brand."

Many movie franchises have made over a billion dollars at the global box office, but even still, some of them are currently dead. More recently, it is not too uncommon for a single movie to make a billion dollars, so the number of franchises that do has skyrocketed compared to the early days of the MCU or Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Many of those franchises are flourishing - the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for example, keeps motoring on as the highest-grossing franchise ever - but others have come to a halt despite including some of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

The Jurassic Park/World franchise began in 1993 with Jurassic Park, one of the best movies ever made. The series, which chronicles the attempts of various parties to open theme parks featuring de-extinct dinosaurs, now boasts six films, split into two trilogies: the Jurassic Park trilogy and the Jurassic World trilogy. The franchise ended with 2022's Jurassic World Dominion, which united the casts from the old and new films. Any chance of the movie continuing after this one was extinguished by Dominion's awful critical performance. It's the worst installment and a franchise killer - and even its worldwide gross of over $1 billion.

The deal caps off a massive January for games industry acquisitions. Take-Two announced an agreement to acquire Zynga for roughly $12.7 billion on January 11, and Microsoft followed up with a $68.7 billion deal for Activision Blizzard a week later.

Meanwhile, The Little Mermaid live-action remake has been a disappointment having made just over $560 million on a budget of $250 million. According to Screen Rant, the rule of thumb to break even in Hollywood means you have to make around 2.5 times the budget when marketing and distribution are taken into consideration. Unlike the billion-dollar successes of other reimagined animated musicals like The Lion King and Aladdin, this outing will lose millions.

As it stands, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is Disney's only real box office success this summer having made $844.9 million worldwide on a budget of $250 million. All in all, Screen Rant estimate Disney could lose almost $1 billion at around $900 million in total losses.

Today, Governor Newsom signed into law one of the largest state investments in public fiber in the history of the United States. No longer will the state of California simply defer to the whims of AT&T and cable for broadband access, now every community is being given their shot to choose their broadband destiny.

Arguably, what pushed us to this moment was the image of kids doing homework in fast-food parking lots during the pandemic. It made it undeniable that internet access was neither universal nor adequate in speed and capacity. That moment, captured and highlighted by Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo, a former member of the Sacramento Assembly, forced a reckoning with the failures of the current broadband ecosystem. Coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic also forcing schools to burn countless millions of public dollars renting out inferior mobile hotspots, Sacramento finally had enough and voted unanimously to change course.

The revolution here is the fact that the law does not rely on AT&T, Frontier Communications, Comcast, and Charter to solve the digital divide. Quite simply, the program makes very little of the total $6 billion budget available to these large private ISPs who have already received so much money and still failed to deliver a solution. This is an essential first step towards reaching near universal fiber access, because it was never ever going to happen through the large private ISPs who are tethered to fast profits and short term investor expectations that prevent them from pursuing universal fiber access. What the state needed was to empower local partners in the communities themselves who will take on the long-term infrastructure challenge.

AZAM AHMED, The New York Times: It is a Wall Street morality tale, in some ways. How can something like this be allowed to happen? How can one individual completely shape the destiny of this firm, and ultimately, its demise?

AARON LUCCHETTI: And so he bought billions of dollars worth of these bonds in a way that seemed to hearken back to his days at Goldman. He basically made a Goldman-sized bet at a firm that was only a sliver of Goldman Sachs.

AARON LUCCHETTI, The Wall Street Journal: The trades stopped happening in the summer of 2011 because, eventually, they were too big for the board and for the risk officers. And the message was, "Enough. Leave them at $6 billion. You can keep them, but don't build them up any higher than that."

In 2014, Flipkart experienced not one, but many such moments. By June, the company had already witnessed its most successful product launch with the Moto G phone, become the first Indian e-commerce firm to record $1 billion in gross sales, and completed the buyout of Myntra, a sector-changing deal.

Just when you thought all the big movers and shakers had done their multi-billion dollar acquisition deals for the year, Sony have just announced they're buying Bungie for $3.6 billion. A small sum, perhaps, in the face of the $69 billion Microsoft are currently shelling out for Activision Blizzard, but rather than simply subsuming the Destiny developer into the PlayStation mothership, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan has said that Bungie will "remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher." Well!

And growing seems to be very much on the agenda, according to Bungie CEO Pete Parsons: "We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.

Marc Andreessen, an entrepreneur, billionaire and arguably the most successful startup investor ever, said that a big, hungry market is the biggest factor in whether a startup will succeed, not a great product or a talented team.

To be clear, crossing the one billion mark is no easy feat. Only two movies, Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have done it this year, but that used to be the standard for Disney. There are some notable turnouts, of course, such as The Little Mermaid (US$569 million worldwide), Elemental (US$495 million), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (US$845 million). ff782bc1db
