I hope this kind of post is allowed here. I'm doing a little project where I go to different subreddits of music genres and I ask the members what the best album of that genre is. After this, I listen to the album that got the most upvotes after 24 hours and write my thoughts about it (I will write this as a comment under this post, so if you want to read it, make sure to check back in 2-3 days. This won't be a professional review btw. I don't know anything about music theory so it's just gonna be the thoughts of a random guy). The list I'm following is Wikipedia's list of the most popular music genres in a randomized order. I'm planning to listen to one album per day and this time the genre is Dancehall. So please recommend me an album in the comments. It could be the best one in your opinion, your personal favourite, or the album that best represents this genre according to you, but please, only submit one album. I know nothing about this genre, so I'm going in blind.

The past month i've been listening to more dub and rocksteady which of course morphed into dancehall. I'm familar with all three already but i never thought to mix dancehall and techno together. Essentially, its the same as dub techno; taking patterns, techniques, and structure from reggae/dub and mixing it with the sounds native to general techno.

As far as how i'd approach it, i'd try to mix in the typical drums and samples used in 90s dancehall and mix that with the synths and such i'm already using for my more dubby stuff. The bass is anywhere from straight subs to some wonky distorted and filtered stuff.

What i'm really interested in is the kick and bass, as the bass is what drives a lot of reggae, dub, and dancehall. The patterns can be anything as simple as dem bow to some of the more interesting and creative patterns imo.

The best part is theres a wealth of materil to sift through for influence. Riddim culture is amazing because these beats get passed around like water and often times artists like Beenie Man will have multiple tracks using the same riddim with variations in the beat.

Reggae Sumfest is the biggest concert on the island. It happens every July and draws locals and tourists from all over to Montego Bay. The event spans two days, and night one is billed as dancehall night, with the hottest and greatest dancehall artistes.

Dancehall vinyls or CDs are the best way to bring a piece of the culture back home. Located in downtown Kingston, Rockers International Records store is one of the few places in the capital where you can find a wide variety of dancehall and reggae vinyl records. They also have other merchandise and souvenirs on sale, including clothing, pins, notebooks and key chains.

Dancehall originates from reggae, and its roots come back in the late 1970s. Very quickly this genre spread from the Caribbean to the rest of the globe. It is extremely popular nowadays, even such big stars as Drake and Rihanna have dancehall tracks in their releases. Many stars try themselves in dancehall but only a few manage to preserve the vibes of this genre and become real dancehall kings. So, we have created for you a compilation of 10 best dancehall musicians in the world who made a great contribution to the flourishing of this musical genre.

And finally, legendary Vybes Kartel, who collaborated with many other dancehall musicians on our list and was the mentor for some of them. He deservedly can be called the most dominant musician in the genre of dancehall. He is still extremely popular and inspires other musicians despite the fact that is imprisoned now.

We must admit that the previous year was extremely productive for the genre of dancehall and we hope that this tendency will continue this year too. Who knows, maybe in 2018 we will learn new names and enjoy more hits from the bright and talented musicians listed in our post.

Originally called the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording, the honor was presented to artists for eligible songs or albums. The Jamaican group Black Uhuru received the first award in 1985. Beginning with the 1992 ceremony, the name of the award was changed to Best Reggae Album. Starting in 2002, awards were often presented to the engineers, mixers, and/or producers in addition to the performing artists. According to the category description guide for the 52nd Grammy Awards, eligible works are vocal or instrumental reggae albums "containing at least 51% playing time of newly recorded music", including roots reggae, dancehall and ska music.[3]

The five best dancehall songs of the year were made by very different musicians. This year Mavado, with his singular voice, came into his own, releasing well-crafted hit after well-crafted hit. Young star Laza Morgan and veteran I-Octane side-stepped into the spotlight. Kartel's scandal didn't keep his catchy anthems away from people's ears, and Popcaan did not linger in his mentor's shadow.

He was 2011's buzzworthy newcomer: a Rastafarian DJ in the vein of Sizzla or Capleton, comfortable moving from conscious music to hardcore dancehall and back again. Although he does not partake, his tune is his homage to the high grade, showcasing I-Octane's signature style: rapid-fire rhyming skills, haunting vocals and simple, singalong hooks.

Following on from a set at Dummy Presents last month, extended family of Manchester based label and clubnight Swing Ting, DJ duo Hipsters Don't Dance, share the fruits of a plentiful year in dancehall riddims.

Shatta Wale, also known as Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., is a Ghanaian dancehall artist widely regarded as "The Dancehall King." He is known for his unique fusion of dancehall, reggae, and Afrobeat influences, addressing social and political issues through his lyrics, and collaborating with both local and international artists.

"Grade 1 Album" is the debut album of Ghanaian dancehall and reggae artist Stonebwoy. Released in 2012, the album showcased his exceptional talent, featuring hit songs like "Climax," "Pull Up," and "Ghetto Love," which became instant favorites among fans. Stonebwoy's music is characterized by his captivating voice, introspective lyrics, and socially conscious messages, advocating for positive change through his music.

"God Over Everything" is the debut album of Nigerian dancehall and reggae artist Patoranking, released in 2016. The album established him as one of the leading voices in Nigerian and African dancehall music, featuring hit tracks such as "No Kissing Baby," "Daniella Whine," and "My Woman, My Everything." Patoranking's music touches on themes of love, spirituality, and social issues, resonating with a wide audience.

"Dankwasere" is the debut album of Ghanaian dancehall artist Samini, released in 2004. The album showcased Samini's versatility, blending elements of reggae, highlife, and dancehall to create a unique sound that resonated with fans. Tracks like "Linda," "Odo," and "Gyae Shi" gained massive popularity both in Ghana and across the African continent, solidifying Samini's reputation as one of Ghana's finest dancehall artists.

Also on Wednesdays is a blast-from-the-past, reformed street dance called Pepperseed, at the Pulse Complex at 38a Trafalgar Road in Kingston. For most diehard dancehall fans and 90s babies eager to immerse themselves in the music made in their decade of birth, Pepperseed is heaven.
