Yet some leaders debated the merits of an attack and were concerned about the political ramifications of collateral damage. The coalition guaranteed the Iraqi government that it would provide humanitarian relief and reconstruction support to the damaged city during and following the battle to address concerns over the expected collateral damage. One of the biggest lessons from the First Battle of Fallujah was that Iraqis and coalition members had to deliberately shape the political environment to ensure the necessary political will to sustain the operation through its completion.

While planning for the battle, coalition forces carefully studied and applied lessons they had learned from the First Battle of Fallujah. One such lesson was that a successful attack on the city required sufficient time to gather intelligence, plan the operation, and prepare and position forces. As such, the coalition waited until November to initiate its attack. As a result, Operation al-Fajr included a thorough intelligence preparation of the urban environment; sufficient time for troops to prepare; an extensive shaping, deception, and information operations campaign; an impressive logistics buildup; and a careful fires support plan.

From November 10 to November 14 the American and Iraqi battalions continued their deliberate, methodical advance southward. Some districts offered only light resistance while others provided surprisingly heavy combat. To achieve success, the Americans employed a routine that has been common throughout urban warfare history and one that American soldiers had employed in Aachen during World War II and during many other urban battles. First came an airstrike, followed by artillery or mortars. Next, combined arms teams of armor, infantry, and engineers working in a symbiotic relationship of protection advanced down the streets. This was followed by infantry and engineers working together to breach into a building and clear the inside. The insurgents were unwilling or unable to launch night attacks, so the American units could post minimal security during these darkened hours while allowing personnel to rest, recover, and eat the food that was being brought forward according to the well-organized logistics plan.

A second tactical lesson from the battle is that urban operations require effective combined arms maneuver employing all available enablers and, given the complexity of the urban terrain, these units need to be fully trained and thoroughly interoperable beforehand. Coalition planners realized they needed to dedicate more forces for the Second Battle of Fallujah so they assigned two combined arms task forces and many attachments to the RCTs, but these units had never worked together. The integration of the Army battalions within each of the Marine RCTs, and the sharing of enablers when needed, demonstrated an admirable level of teamwork. This allowed Marines and soldiers to forge strong bonds between units that always enhance the likelihood of combat success. All this integration allowed RCT-1 and RCT-7 to secure a fairly sizeable city in only nine days with only several additional weeks required to clear the city afterward. This is especially impressive given that urban battles often take several weeks or months.

Burning ships and bodies littered the field of battle off the shores of Guadalcanal at dawn on November 13, 1942. The previous night, American and Japanese ships had clashed in arguably the most unorganized and chaotic naval battle of World War II. A superior Japanese force had run smack into a smaller, outnumbered American force. Despite many errors, the Americans gave a good accounting of themselves, forcing the Japanese to abandon their mission of attacking Henderson Field. Aircraft launching from Henderson Field attacked the retreating Japanese and sunk the disabled battleship Hiei later on the 13th, completing the American strategic victory.

Shortly after the destroyer debacle, Lee lost contact with Gatch aboard South Dakota. Electrical failures caused the new battleship to lose power and steam onward in complete darkness. Power was restored, lost again, and restored again throughout the rest of the fight. While South Dakota would give her share of punishment, she would receive a great deal in return as well. Sailing blind, the battleship was lit up by Japanese searchlights, and heavy fire poured into her, setting her upperworks ablaze. The Japanese battleship Kirishima opened fire. South Dakota reeled under the intense fire, swung out of line, and returned fire with her main battery, hitting both Japanese cruisers that were setting her afire. Having suffered over 26 hits, one of which was a 14-inch battleship shell, SoDak retired from the fight.

Having suffered 20 16-inch shell hits from Washington and an untold number of five-inch hits, Kirishima staggered through the night, slowly sinking, finally capsizing, plunging by the stern and disappearing from sight. Deprived of its main punch, the Japanese task force attempted to track Washington, fired one last salvo of torpedoes in defiance, gave up, came about and withdrew from the scene with all possible haste. Willis Lee found no gain in pursuing the retreating enemy. He ordered a zigzag course and retired from the field of battle having almost singlehandedly pounded the enemy to a bloody pulp.

Every WWII combatant appreciated the need for an unbreakable code that would help them communicate while protecting their operational plans. The U.S. Marines knew where to find one: the Navajo Nation. Marine Corps leadership selected 29 Navajo men, the Navajo Code Talkers, who created a code based on the complex, unwritten Navajo language. The code primarily used word association by assigning a Navajo word to key phrases and military tactics. This system enabled the Code Talkers to translate three lines of English in 20 seconds, not 30 minutes as was common with existing code-breaking machines. The Code Talkers participated in every major Marine operation in the Pacific theater, giving the Marines a critical advantage throughout the war. During the nearly month-long battle for Iwo Jima, for example, six Navajo Code Talker Marines successfully transmitted more than 800 messages without error. Marine leadership noted after the battle that the Code Talkers were critical to the victory at Iwo Jima. At the end of the war, the Navajo Code remained unbroken.Read more about Navajo Code Talkers on CIA's website.

The Second Battle of Felucia saw a clash between Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance for control of the planet Felucia during the Clone Wars. Having been forced into a retreat at the First Battle of Felucia, the Republic re-established a presence there thanks to the efforts of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, who led their clone troopers on an offensive into Separatist-held territory. In retaliation, General Grievous supplied one of his outposts on Felucia with reinforcements to secure the system for the Confederacy. Responding to the arrival of the battle droid detachment, Skywalker, Tano, and Jedi Master Plo Koon targeted the enemy outpost with a three-pronged assault, each leading a squad to divide the Separatist defenses.[1]

Clone trooper pilot "Slider" flew a Clone Z-95 Headhunter during the battle.[4] Supported by heavy artillery tanks situated on an adjacent ridge, the Jedi and clones were able to secure the base from T-series military strategic analysis and tactics droid TZ-33, eliminating all of the droid forces there. However, Tano was captured during the fighting by a group of Trandoshan hunters, who brought her to the moon Wasskah to be hunted for sport. Skywalker and Koon withdrew from Felucia the following day after failing to locate the missing Padawan.[1]

Rather than respond to the Wells Notice privately, as most companies would do, Coinbase, as per usual, instead immediately went into full offensive mode and laid out their defenses on Twitter and elsewhere in an attempt to rally the mob, and publicly shame the SEC into backing off. For whatever reason, Coinbase believes a Twitter rant against the SEC (who will never respond, unless it is with a lawsuit) is the best way to do battle against a Wells Notice.

War artist Richard Jack portrays the Canadian stand during the Second Battle of Ypres, which he did not witness. He painted this enormous work of art, with the canvas 371.5 by 589.0 centimetres, in his London studio. It was the first of almost a thousand works, by over one hundred artists, commissioned by the Canadian War Memorials Fund (CWMF), an organization established by Lord Beaverbrook to document Canada's war effort. Sir Edmund Walker, who sat on the advisory board to the CWMF, felt that Jack captured the achievements of the Canadians during the battle, but felt the work would not resonate with Canadians, who, he felt, were "not likely to appreciate such realistic treatment of war." He was wrong and Jack's painting remains an iconic work from the First World War.

Ahead of the fighting, British and Canadian engineers went forward with extra resources to smooth the approaches for the Canadian Corps. Extra bridges were built, somehow without alerting the enemy, and new tramways were laid to help bring artillery pieces and supplies to the battlefield.
