It was a team effort to determine which items would be included in the time capsule. The 150th Anniversary Committee reached out to the all employees of the Bank to get their feedback on which items should be added. Some of the items included were photos, business cards, brochures, a piggy bank, letters, deposit slips, 150th anniversary articles, and of course, Monson Savings branded masks and hand sanitizer.

Employees in attendance took a moment to add their business cards, messages, and other items. After the time capsule was sealed, it was placed in the ground. Dan Moriarty took the honors of adding the first scoops of dirt, with others following his lead.

Norovirus is recognised as a major cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in all age groups. Information on the genetic diversity of the noroviruses circulating in the 1980s and 1990s, before the development and adoption of dedicated molecular assays, is limited compared with the last decades. Between 1986 and 2020, uninterrupted viral surveillance was conducted in symptomatic children hospitalized with AGE in Palermo, Italy, providing a unique time capsule for exploring the epidemiological and evolutionary dynamics of enteric viruses. A total of 8433 stool samples were tested using real-time RT-PCR. All samples were stored at -20 or -80 C until processing. In this 35-year long time span, noroviruses of genogroup II (GII) were detected in 15.6% of AGE requiring hospitalization, whilst GI noroviruses were detected in 1.4% of AGE. Overall, the predominant norovirus capsid (Cap) genotype was GII.4 (60.8%), followed by GII.3 (13.3%) and GII.2 (12.4%). Temporal replacement of the GII.4 Cap variants associated with different polymerase (Pol) types were observed over the study period. The chronology of emergence and circulation of the different GII.4 variants were consistent with data available in the literature. Also, for GII.3 and GII.2 NoVs, the circulation of different lineages/strains, differing in either the Cap or Pol genes or in both, was observed. This long-term study revealed the ability of noroviruses to continuously and rapidly modify their genomic makeup and highlights the importance of surveillance activities in vaccine design.

Preserving small pieces of frozen tissue for possible future ancillary studies ("tumor banking") usually involves either placing a small piece of tissue in a cryovial and snap freezing it in liquid nitrogen or embedding and freezing the tissue in a block of cryopreservation medium, such as optimal cutting temperature (OCT) compound. The cryovial storage method leaves an irregularly shaped piece of tissue frozen to the side of the plastic vial, where it is exposed to air, subject to desiccation ("freezer burn"), and difficult to remove, but the vials are easy to store. The OCT method results in good morphological preservation, but yields a large awkwardly stored block from which it may be difficult to locate and recover small specimens. We have proposed a novel method of storing tissue bank specimens, the "capsule-freeze" method, which combines the advantages of OCT specimen preservation with those of cryovial specimen storage. Using this method, a tissue specimen is "snap-frozen" in OCT within a size "00" VCap pharmaceutical capsule, then the capsule is stored within a 1.5-mL cryovial. The specimen is harvested by simply cutting a slice out of the capsule and sealing the cut ends with OCT before their return to the freezer. The slice is then embedded en face within an OCT block before frozen sectioning. Morphological preservation is excellent, and the capsules are very easy to store. Occasional cracking that we found with the use of gelatin capsules is greatly diminished with the use of VCaps cellulose-walled capsules. The OCT can be easily removed by rinsing in cold 70% ethanol solutions. This method of tissue storage is ideal for the small specimens that are now commonly archived in these days of tissue sparing surgery.

An autopsy the following day revealed she died from acute cyanide poisoning, but it was not until Monday night that toxicologists traced the poison to a bottle of Extra-Strength Excedrin capsules in her home, the medical examiner's office said.

'Although we believe this to be a local isolated incident,' said Bristol-Myers spokesman Jerry Parrott in New York, 'we are also asking all stores throughout the United States to quarantine excedrin capsules for the time being and to remove excedrin capsules from store shelves until we have more information from stores in Auburn.'Advertisement

It was the fifth death in 1986 linked to over-the-counter medication poisoned with cyanide. Three of the previous cases involved tampering with Tylenol capsules, including one other death in Washington state. Suicide is suspected in two of the deaths. A fourth death was linked to a cyanide-laced Anacin-3 capsule.

'At the current time, we're advising the general public in the Seattle area about the Excedrin capsule problem and warning them not to gake the Excedrin capsule product until more is known,' said Chris Rezendes, an FDA spokesman in Seattle.Advertisement

The first rash of killings in the United States from poisoned painkillers occurred in 1982 when seven people died from taking cyanide-laced capsules of Extra-Strength Tylenol that had been planted on Chicago-area markets.

The Tylenol scare resurfaced four years later after Diane Elsroth, 23, of Peekskill, N.Y., died Feb. 8 from taking two Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules from a bottle purchased in an A&P store in Bronxville.Advertisement

On Feb. 13, a second bottle of poisoned Tylenol was found in a Woolworth's store in Bronxville, and four days later, Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Tylenol, announced it had halted production of all non-prescription capsule drugs.

On April 27, 1986, Sandie Gregory, 21, of Pullman, Wash., died of acute cyanide poisoning after taking two Tylenol capsules. She had access to cyanide in her work at the Washington State University veterinary laboratory, and an investigation determined she probably committed suicide. The death of Kenneth Wayne Faries, 24, a University of Texas student, apparently from a cyanide-contaminated Anacin-3 capsule, was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. Toxicological tests indicated Faries died of acute cyanide poisoning on May 20 or May 21.

Eddie Gale fulfilled his promise. Family legend had it that, 50 years ago, construction worker Gale had placed a letter for his family in a time capsule buried at the then-City National Bank building at 5651 East Lancaster.

The year was 1983. Bullard was a small community with a population of 890. Houston Street ran through the small quiet town consisting of a 4-way stop, U.S. Post Office and small school system. There was no building boom going on in Bullard at that time, but a group of business men came together with a vision to build the First National Bank of Bullard at 210 N. Houston. During the bank's construction, they also had the forethought to place a time capsule inside the walls of the front entrance with instructions to open in the year 2008.

"1983 was a year of cultural changes and far-reaching world events," said Chairman Jeff Austin, Jr. "We are excited about revealing what was stored in the time capsule and what they wanted us to know about their life," commented Austin. "We don't know what is behind the wall but eagerly anticipate seeing the contents."

Preserving the history and significance of the Tower to future generations was important to the owners of the Central National Bank. During the dedication ceremony, a copper box time capsule was placed inside the cornerstone. Stone workers then guided a 1.5 ton granite slab into position while the president of the bank, Frank Evans, smoothed mortar beneath it, sealing the history inside the cornerstone.

While restoring the granite slabs on the exterior of the tower in the Spring of 2015, the Hinman team uncovered the cornerstone. To the best of their knowledge, the time capsule is still sealed inside. Although opening the cornerstone is tempting, Roger Hinman has decided to leave it untouched until 2031, exactly 100 years after the Tower was built. Until then, we are lucky enough to possess an original and complete edition of the Battle Creek Enquirer newspaper, published on June 14, 1931, written and published in celebration of the newly-built Central National tower.

Piedmont Trust Bank is no more, but its time capsule is. The time capsule, prepared in 1972, was supposed to honor the Martinsville-based bank on its 100th anniversary. It will be opened in a ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday.

Martinsville city officials will open the 50-year-old time capsule at 11 a.m. Friday at 1 Ellsworth St., the building that has been known most recently as the old BB&T but was Piedmont Trust Bank before that.

"Piedmont Trust Bank, which observed its 50th anniversary Saturday with a ceremony at the site of the new addition under construction, also stuffed a 'time capsule' with mementos of Martinsville 1972.

I also think season is also important in considering a capsule wardrobe. Your first suit should be 4-season, but the next two should be seasonal. A summer suit, perhaps a linen blend with a lighter color or subtle pattern, is a worthwhile investment, and so is a winter suit, a flannel or tweed with some reassuring heft for the fall.

In most professional working environments, suits are now largely reserved for client meetings and have otherwise been supplanted by sports coats. It would be fun (and useful) if you were to do a capsule that mixed both. If I were young and starting my career, I would go with 3 suits and 3 sports coats.
